  1. "irregardless" is a word on Ask Slashdot: Is SMP worth it? · · Score: 1

IRREGARDLESS of your feeling about language, you must understand what language is. It is a constantly evolving creature. The dictionary serves to track and catalog our use of language, not to tell us how to use language. If many people start using a silly word, and it becomes accepted, it is added to the dictionary. If you don't like it, don't use it. You'll simply have to wait for it to fall out of the common usage, that, or derive your hapiness elsewhere.

  2. Stable? on Linux 2.2.3 Released · · Score: 1

My NT server has been up 31 days 17 hours, running a web server, network monitoring software, and an IRC server. However, I still like my linux servers better, as they have NEVER needed a reboot. I'm excited about that new kernel! (there, back on topic :)

  3. Linux taking the world by storm... on More LinuxWorld Expo News · · Score: 1

It is amazing how much buz and excitement is being generated by this. I have been using linux at my office in small and hidden places for a little while, but only yesturday did our IS Manager start asking me about it. This is the same woman who said, "nothing will beat my HP's" just 3 months ago. Now she wants to setup some linux boxes to "play around a bit." Isn't it a great time to be alive? :)~

  4. Linux in Retail on Linux to be used in large retail operation · · Score: 1

It's my understanding that there are already a few retail chains using Linux for POS terminals. It makes sense, with that many machines to equip the savings must be intense. I love the quote from the Article:

Linux is free and it runs like the wind.

    How about:

NT is expensive and it blows like the wind.

  5. It's simple... on Ask Slashdot: Software for Youngsters? · · Score: 1

The idea is to get youngster interested. You can't just say here, start programing something, kid. Building a machine is a good introduction to computers. After you make one, it's only natural to next want to "make it" do something. Hence, wanting to learn to program.
Slapping some software in front of a kid isn't much motivation. Learning a bit of what a computer could be made to do is.

  6. It's simple... on Ask Slashdot: Software for Youngsters? · · Score: 1

Take the kid to the computer store and have him pick out some killer games. Then buy him all the parts to build a killer machine and guide him on building it, with playing the games as an incentive. Worked for me once upon a time.
