This reminds me of the guy at the Mozilla party whose card read: "My Ass Is a Portal."

Great another platform that they are going to offer products for without a lick of decent support. The only real support you get is if you have a solaris box. The other platfors such as Digital Unix get the following treatment:
"hmm we don't know whats wrong. How about we fax you a NDA. For your troubles we will send you a debug build which you can install while your clients suffer - just to generate a core file, which you will send back to us. sound good?"
Thats Netscape tech support. true story

  5. Oracle8i free CD's license... by Anonymous Coward · · Score: 0
Take care. The license is pretty restrictive. Only the user being sent the CD can use the software, and then only for development. No personal Oracle DB. Also, you cannot publish benchmarks to any third party (your buddies qualify as 3rd parties).

Of course, web-click licenses are probably on even shakier legal standing than shrink-wrap ones, but I can't afford a lawyer.

If you need something, consider the following DBs first, as they have free licenses:

On a less-free note, but still of interest, there is also MySQL, although it's more of a glorified hash engine than a RDBMS.

No, these products aren't as stable or feature-full. However, you are under no restrictions to limit yourself to the features they do offer. You can add as many of your own as you like. And you're also not limited in what you can do, say, or think about these DBs.

If more people would use the mirrors, then they'd be faster. If you're network installing RH, pick a site close to you. In the UK, for example, rather than wasting transatlantic bandwidth, just go to the Mirrors/ftp.redhat.com directory of sunsite.doc.ic.ac.uk

After reading this article, and following all the links, and learning how big and corporate the expo is, it's got me thinking. I've been using Linux a long time now, and been telling everyone how good it was, etc., etc. for years. I guess I'm sorta surprised now that people are now listening. I'm afraid that my Linux will be taken away from me and turned into some dastardly corporate bloatware, or maybe worse, just taken more away from the community. I'm almost thinking that I'd rather have it be a little clunky, and not many people use it, now that we've gone too far. Maybe it just wouldn't be as fun if everyone used it. :-)

Anybody else start feeling this way, or am I just being a whining sentimental??

So that's why Rob was logged in from dhcpsomething.redhat.com a few weeks ago.. And here I was thinking that Redhat was going to buy out slashdot. Oh well, I hope nobody pays attention to all the rumours spread on SlashNET then. :)

Perhaps redhat and VA could cooperate on making linux.com a portal site.. Now that would be interesting to see..

  11. 8i is an important development. by vallee · · Score: 1

With the newly announced LDAP support in the db, Oracle has really closed the loop on OS features in a database. Along with Raw Iron, this could turn out to be big in the Oracle vs. OS's (where the OS means OS for sale, like NT.) OS's like Linux should only benefit.
Some 8i-related links: my 8i editorial, featured on /. in mid-November '98, still really interesting (if I may say so myself) with some posts from the Oracle team developing it. Also, the company I work for simultaneously announced an Oracle DBA outsourcing practice, with Michael Abbey heading it up (author of Tuning Oracle among other OP books). You can find out about that at The Pythian Group's website.
