I had a big laugh at this guy's letter! The reason are simply : 1- ANY GODDAMN OS has security holes that endusers either (i) don't care about (ii) don't understand. 2- These end users will go then and buy Norton utilities. 3- And start spending cash to get their system secure etc....
This whole thing about newbies harming Linux is just another STUPID attempt from some LOUSY - I am the best that's why I am using Linux- people.
These guys and gals only use Linux for the hype of using a select OS.
Tell you what, go and code your own OS, and then tell everybody they are too stupid to use it, and stuff it up you know what!
All software can't be open source man! It's a good thing OSes are for now like Linux. People need to live, ok? Now Applix is not RedHat, and you can still use emacs right?
This is bad people. I know RedHat only. I have never tried any other distribution because I have been satisfied. On the other hand, I believe Linux before any dist is good.
I think Debian, Slackware, SuSe, etc... are all trying in different ways to give good Linux stuff to their users.

If RedHat is going to be #1 in US consumer Linux market. OK with me! If Average Joe consumer is going to think Linux is RedHat. So be it. After a year at most Joe would discover any other distribution.
The goal of Linux should be to become the OS of people the OS that teaches real power. After that, believe me, they will poke at Debian, Slack, or anything else.

Ok, let's get back to the suit thing. Did you know some people actually sell FTP software for 90US$? Did you know Office costs around 400$ Canadian! Or did you know Windows98 costs 150$CAN for an upgrade! This is the land from where these people come! There are actually people who buy screensavers! Ok AfterDrak is cool but does it deserve 30-40$CAN!, when RH Linux cost me 50$? NO! I have been using Linux and Windows for a year now. I had used Win3.1 before, and dos! And believe me, THERE are strange things out there!
So what is the problem? People don't know, and we are expecting them to believe that for 100$ they can get an OS, an Office suite, ftp, telnet, ftp server, web server, netscape, C/C++, Fortran compilers, and text editors, plus LOADS of SCREENSAVERS! Add to that GIMP, xv, XPAINT, etc... and all you need is a X fax and telephony software (The software exist but no nice X or gnome or Kde interface I know of) to be more than loaded as a starter!
It's hard to believe that you have been screwed for a long time! That people robbed you for all that time! The natural reaction is to say. IMPOSSIBLE! This Linux thing must be total crap to sell at 1/100 price, in its most expensive form, of what I had to pay. It's like when I bought My P166MMX for 2000$ and six month later I saw it was sold at 1100$.
The only solution is to ask them gently if they would like to see it work! Show them, and offer them your shoulder so they could weep to their heart content before filing a class suit against Microsoft et al.
I totally agree with you people. No one is forced to make free software, no one is forced to buy free software, no one is forced to sell it, or even use it.
That's just not the case with Microsoft.
That's what Linux is about: choice.

I actually buy redhat software instead of downloading it, because I want them to get fat, to give me more, etc... The day RedHat or any other starts forcing me onto unwanted paths, I'll just download the damn thing! or switch to something else.
Now if you hate the idea of people making money, then you probably are the sick one! Or maybe wished deep in there that you were the one, in which case you should shut up and work to get some money! Sell air, or do XXX site!

Microsoft like any other serious company is probably having people poking and toying with Linux for any reason. It's easy since Linux is open source.
However, Microsoft would never make such a port available unless NT dies. Then to salvage what is to be salvaged they'd probably do it.
Don't forget Office is a big part of MS revenues.
One word af advice to StarDivision and Applix.
Start sending your products to companies to test them. Don't get squashed by big companies.
Maybe, give a personal edition of StarOffice for Windows 95/98 along with some PC magazines

and HOWTO do it.
Howver I know of people ( at least 2)
who did it on their own, and now say WOW. Works
fine for them, and mostly FAST!
