Reading TFA, this resupply mission is hugely expensive compared to what SpaceX will deliver (if nothing goeas wrong in their next launch)
Now, being European and all gives me some pride that the ESA is doing this and all, but the whole thing just seems so wasteful. Especially if we consider that the Dragon capsule will be reusable.
Humans have a built in mechanism that focuses more of their attention towards bad things, "not nice" people, etc. Because it's the not nice things / people that have a higher probability of killing you and thus deserve more of your attention.
It seems like it would make more sense to build all single-family type houses on "stilts" that can flex and should a tsunami come in, the house just floats on top...
Watching the trailer, I could not help notice how old he's become, even compared to the TED video (2007).
Dear Randi, please stay with us for a lot longer!
Why would we want to stick to x86 in the smartphone, portable device world? x86 is an aging architecture, which still pulls back the PC market, granted with PCs we need backwards compatibility. But the smartphone market is new and thus able to adopt new architectures. And the world is seemingly moving in this direction. This is just some wrangling by Intel to try to push into the portable market.
You know why the economy doesn't respond to fiscal stimulus like it did in the 70s? A good hint is the energy cost of economic activity. Just check the price of oil (notice the log scale).
What the US needs is a reforming of its entire economy. Why the the hell are people in the US using more than twice the amount of energy per capita than the EU does?
The sad thing is that a task of this magnitude requires great leadership. A trait which seems to lack severely in the US, as the current bickering over the debt ceiling has shown.

Based on my experience, the amount of work that I put into creating quality code is dependent on the task at hand. When I know that the script, software will only be used once or twice (prepare the graph, etc.) it's not worth it to put a great amount of work into it to make it usable. In these circumstances I mostly adhere to the Klingon coding rules: "A TRUE Klingon warrior does not comment his code!"
Now, it should be noted that, sloppy code means: usability is utter shit and should not be confused with errors in the algorithms, maths and implementation of these.
In general, the more scientific value a piece of code will have, the further it will be developed (not necessarily by scientists).

Want an awesome space telescope? One word: Kepler It is discovering planets orbiting other stars! Hundreds of them! Simultaneously!
There's the Very Large Optical Telescope, then there's the Overwhelmingly Large Telescope and the European Extremely Large Telescope. What's next? Ridiculously Large Telescope?

I personally don't like the "should of" either. But sometimes these things creep up on you.
Exactly. The summary should of at least mentioned that there are serious controversies around the working and "quantumness" of the machine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-Wave_Systems#Criticism http://www.nature.com/news/2011/110531/full/474018a.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+nature%2Frss%2Fcurrent+(Nature+-+Issue)&utm_content=Google+Reader

My thoughts exactly. I repaced my WinMo phone just last december. Would have loved an app store, had I known about it :p
It had an app store? Wow.

(The Moon) Mars is a harsh mistress.
I think I need a jammar for you're bad grammar!

You obviously have never played Angry Birds.

The failure was just due to lack of determination on the Anon part.

This and this should clear up the confusion. NIST got a huge boost of funding, as well as renewable energy programs at the DOE.

Don't you mean 2 mm thin?

How much is that in football fields?
the ASCII experience in Dwarf Fortress to the immersive pleasures of reading a book: 'You can let your imagination fill in the gaps.'
Just like Nethack, Dungeon crawl, etc. Great fun!
