The majority of the "Computer Generation" is not against Mtalica for doing this, most feel that they have the right to protect their product.
What majority?! All I hear is people complain about the BS Metallica lets out. After all, it becomes the consumers product once they buy the CD. So I think they can do whatever they please with it. If I have a CD and my friend likes the music I will go burn them a copy with out any hesitation. Oops... is that a copyright law? I doubt it, because I bought the product. As a consumer it is mine. Also, Metalica is not trying to shutdown Napster...
Oh come on, as long as Napster, mIRC and other file sharing programs exist... this 'crime' of sharing music is going to happen. OF course they wanna Shut It Down. It is the only way they can continue to make more money than they need. If this was such a big deal, then every artist in the business would have spoken in one voice. Have they? No, I don't think so. It is when two failing forms of artist... yes both Metallica and Dr. Dre are failing miserably... freak out because no one really likes their new music because they now officially suck. So in the end they are going to squeeze the penny until it substaniates back into liquid form. It is just somthing for them to bitch about. There are no two ways about it.
~BHM
What I don't understand is why Metallica cares. They have more money than God yet they bitch and moan about Napster and other Universities. Frankly they can suck it. If they wanna attack someone, why dont' they attack the makers of the MP3 rippers? Napster hasn't really done anything wrong. They made a program which distributes MP3's. It allows users to connect to each other and do such "criminal" acts as listening to music.
I mean I have never liked Metallica anyways. I have always thought they sucked. So boo fucking hoo for them. So they lost a bit of money on sales. Yippy! Maybe they will finally realize that it is time to retire.

Where is your arguement? That babble you call a comment just now made me stupid. Slashdot isn't bashing the ideas of another company. Where the problem lies is the company known as Digital Convergence is complainign because someone wrote drivers for Linux to make the silly thing work. It isn't destroying their innovation and hardwork. It is letting them know that
HEY! There are other users who are interested in this product and are helping you by making drivers for you at no expense.
It is a free lunch for them and they turn around and go nuts because of it. Besides... who could make a decent profit off a CueCAT anyways with its initial design. It scans barcodes and they give the thing away for free. Hmmm.... nope I don't see one except royalties from the distros where the barcode takes you too. Kinda like having an AD on a website.
~BHM
Okay ya know... I think this BarCode scanner thingy is cool for two reasons...
1. It has a shiny red light
2. It is free
Everyone has the right by, by claiming the product as there own, to do whatever they damn well want to with it. So someone wrote some drivers for it. YEE HA! It just shows that what took them 5 years to develope took another 5 days to write drivers for.
This Product could be a great thing but do to an anal-retentive CEO it might fade. It scans a barcode (which I do believe is at every foodmart and gas station in the world) and takes you to that distributors website. Big wow! The whole point of a product is to make it grow. I quote Nick Hexum...
If people like your band right away. Somthing is wrong. You are not breaking the mold. You are being easily digestible.
This CueCat just shows how important the OpenSource community is. Think about it... A simple CueCat mod-ed by the "geeks, Hackers and techno-wizzes" could organize and check a DVD collection. It could inventory. It could be a light saber. It could even become a cool computer version of that 'Barcode Warriors' game they had so long ago where certain barcodes created a character and then you would link up to your buddies and fight RPG style to see who would win. This can all be done by innovation and the ideas of others. Digital Convergence needs to realize that they alone can't make a product great. I mean look at Play Station... Yes it is a game console, but with out the ideas and the creations of other companies working with Sony to create games that kicked ass, (FF8) it would have faded as well.

I am not going to argue that W2K is bad because if those results are true then I am wowed. However, I do believe that just because it can network fast doesn't mean it is all that great. What about stability? What about reliability?
I do admit I am an MS-Bitch but only for another week. (Contract working has its ups and downs) However, I remember reading an internal MS magazine compairing W2K to Linux. In this article it talked about three things W2K cannot do. I don't remember the 2nd or 3rd but the very first thing MS admitted to was this:
Linux is better in the aspect at you can run a server by command prompt only
W2K is nice. I won't argue but could you run it on 32 megs of Ram? I hardly think so... You can't barely run the Professional version on 64. Server/AS Needs 128 just to run well and 256 to actually have a true server. If one wanted to they could run Linux on 16 megs alone.
It all comes down to what suits your needs. Reliability, stability, use-ability and raw power. W2K does have power, but at the price of hardware. It is easy to use but I still wouldn't let my mom touch it. You just can't number the days of Unix/Linux right yet. You can't because you have a ton of users keeping the OPenSource dream alive. That can't be crushed by a corporation. In the end I am sure MS will always be on top but, it will never have complete control. For one reason, when a group of people believe in somthing so much as OpenSource, it won't be stopped. They will continue to program and recompile and MS will try they hardest to stop it. But in the end it is not going to benefit to anything but a waste of time on a movement that won't stop.
~BHM
I know it seems crazy but true. Even Merlin doesn't crash. I am not going to knock W2K because it really has a whole lot fo potential. I mean a whole lot. If W2K is this good I am afraid to see what their next version will be like. Oh here is a cute little fact for you too that you might get a kick out of... are you ready?
Windows 2000 Advanced Server takes up 111 megs of Ram in idle without any third party applications running or installed. That is just the straight OS! Can you belive that!? WHAT IN THE WORLD IS IT DOING WITH 111 MEGS OF RAM!!!!
~BHM
I have been messing with 2000 for about four months now and I must say it is one hell of an operating system. There are a total of four versions if no one knew...
Professional, Server, Advanced Server and Data Base
It has some really good features like Dynamic Hardrives, Server Wizards, Windows Media Encoder, an integrated task manager, encrypted file system and much much more.
I wouldn't hold your breath though... I crashed it 7 times already. Four crashes in result to Explorer giving up but later recovering. (Which still requires a system reboot to make everything run just right) The other three crashes were due to my Nvidia TNT2 Ultra card. There isnt' one driver that works for it with out having a kernel dump and an eventual system reboot. It really sucked so I am forced to use my VooDoo 3 3000. This crash is due to any reason... one time it was when I clicked on the screensaver tab... another when I opened a webpage. Didn't take much for the driver to go nuts.
By the way I have a copy of all these OS's except Database. I even have the 25 client version of Advanced Server! He he he!
~BHM
When you use someone elses code, it is out of friggin' respect you put a link to that site with some recognition. It was their code and granted it is up for viewing but if you are going to use it at least have the decency to say Thankyou!
This is more than just Slashdot... it is fun dammit! I spend a good two hours of my day reading the news here built on an incredible layout!
Just think how you would feel if you wrote somthing and someone thought... gee I like that... and they took it and you know they took it and they know they took it but all they can say is...
"HEY! Like the code I wrote... Kinda looks like yours!"
~BHM
First off... if Hotmail is running FreeBSD it is due to the fact it [Hotmail] was bought and aquired by Microsoft. They didn't create it, it was someone elses marvel of an idea.
Secondly, that crap about Windows 2000 is so untrue infact... the 60,000+ computers and 800+ servers found on the Redmond campus all ran Windows 2000 at least once. At least! Before they released it [W2K], they had this huge stress test to make sure it was stable. Granted it was a bit buggy but the bugs that I hear all slah-dotters talk about are so stupid. They were mainly small bugs... not somthing that would bring down the entire system.
That guy... this supposed ex-employee... is full of it! The OS was written for well over a year before its release. It was that next year or so that they stress tested it and driver tested it and re-wrote parts of it to make sure it wasn't a big friggin' joke like we all know 95 was.
~BHM
To put it bluntly... when it comes to complete system technology Apple has the whole market beat. That is why nearly all computer based movies are done on G4's and the joke of a processor Pentium III's. Granted Apple's OS does have a few things to it that many aren't used to who are so dependant on a command prompt that the thought of touching their mouse makes them cry. For you individuals, I feel no pity for you.
Macintosh has a great OS... one reason I hear all this bashing is due to the simple fact that hardly anyone here in this forum has even touched the MAC OS. They read somthing and OH MY GOD! Their opinion is centered on MAC OS sucks. I tell ya... after messing aorund with every OS around... MAC's is the most configurable period. No comparison... no competition!
But when push comes to shove... I would rather run a Windows 2000 server then even look at Linux. Granted yes, Windows takes a load of RAM but when your Kernel is written better and the services offered are more configurable and always operating in a server environment, your RAM would be sucked away too!
Then of course there is the third party software thing which is a total joke. All the software I have found for Linux are friggin' pieces of shit! I mean talk about lack of interest in an OS. When it comes down it... yes Microsoft has had a few bad years but when they still own as much of the OS market as they do... I am sure a small dent in the market share doesn't have Bill sweating too much.
Oh well... the proud remain blind... not that I am trying to change opinions I am merely stating the truth that Linux frankly isn't going to do the damage that all ambid Linux users think it is going to do. Not to MAC and not to WIndows.
~BHM
I think a lot of you are confused... it all depends on how you are compairing the two different OS competitors. If you are compairing on a strict OS basis... Linux has a long way to go still. It needs more support from third party companies. Having Id make a game for the Linux platform is a step in the right direction, but it isn't the battle that caused a turning point in the war. What cracks me up is that all Linux users always forget that Linux isn't going to change the industry that much due to who makes up the majority of the OS-user industry. It isn't name brand comanies like MS or IBM... it is mom and dad and all the little people. The ones who don't know what the hell an IP address is. All they know is that if they click this pretty little button somthing happens. Granted Linux has a decent GUI it has a long way to go before you can even compair it to MAC OS or Windows OS! Linus is made for computer nerds and geeks alike... not the standard user who makes web pages by cut-and-paste not using perl scripts or XML language.
All Linux praisers need to know this fact. Besides... when it comes to MAC's versus PC's... Mac kicks PC's off the damn playing field. Way Off! Where else are you gonna find a super computer for 1700 bucks! Not in the PC Market... not yet!

IMHO, I think MAC computers are the best built with the best support and frankly, anything that is closed architecture has the best compatibility. The parts for MAC are made for MAC. I will always be a PC user, because that is what I grew up on. It seems so stupid of all these Linux users to bash windows, when Linux has its own issues. It is like I have always said, "don't fight a war in another country when you have one going on in your own." The issue is though, is that Linux can run on that system but in a cheesy command prompt. Where as that is more than enough for Win95 to run. Granted it is unstable, but you put two computers down infront of a new user. One running Linux and the other Win95, and I will bet 9 times out of 10, the new user will choose Win95. Granted X can run on 100 Mhz, but not without the "ca-chug ca-chug" factor getting in the way. Generic users want 'pretty desktops' not a command prompt. - Black Helmet Man
You are so correct. Closed Minds.... is Microsoft all that bad? Seriously, what is it about MS that makes them an evil empire? Is it that all these code junkies are upset that they can't have the source code? It is still rediculous, how many companies want to upgrade their chips every 3 months. It is a waste of time and money. At least with Macintosh, (not that I use one, I am a hard core PC user) you don't have to upgrade every 3 months as a business. Their processors are so fast right now that companies have breathing room. Plus they are cheaper. You pay an arm and a leg for a Xeon chip for networking, which costs as much if not more than a MAC Box that runs Windows and Linux in a near great environment. Plus a G4 runs at gigaflops. If only Mac had a freakin' command prompt and a more open-architecture...:) - Black Helmet Man
What I don't understand is Intel's and AMD's rush to put out a GHz. Who gives a rip! It isn't like any normal consumers can afford one of those chips anyways. They keep expanding further and further each quarter and when in reality people are still on chips from speeds around 450 to 550. If that! It doesn't make much sense, to go out and upgrade your processor every 3 months. Including at the horendous amount they ask for. Maybe Intel is just mad because someone else made a better chip. - BlackHelmetMan
Why fuck Bill and Windows? Care to Explain? I don't understand all the flame Windows gets. Everyone acts like Linux and all these other Unix based systems are so good, when in fact they crash because of hardware failures. Maybe not often sometimes never, but still why bash a good thing? Upset that maybe Windows is good and it costs a little more than you can afford at the present time? Yeah 750 is a little steep for a server version of Windows. It is really stable though. Only crashed on me once and it was due to the whole Nvidia driver thing. But since they released that new driver what is it 3.16, 3.68? Anyways, since they released that my computer runs without a kink. Even the Plug and Pray part worked perfect. Let see... killer user interface backed by security and an uninterupted, nongrowing kernel that yes, maybe 4% slower for business apps and 50% slower for games, but at least there are games for it. You all look at the negative side. 65,000 bugs are a lot, but they aren't major bugs. They aren't even bugs to say "Gee, I don't know sounds risky!" They are minor glitches. That is all, name one system the is 100% sound and I will show you a load of Bullshit. Even Microsoft the company itself listed 3 imporant ways Linux is better. I know, I read them in a Microsoft news letter. Like what was it, oh yeah... the fact you can run a server in the command prompt. Things like that. Doesn't make Linux superior. I mean Linux is good, i use it. Until it can surpass Windows though, I won't switch. Black Helmet Man
You are telling me... I mean if you stop and think about it... if the Windows OS is so bad... if it sucks in such a way that we laugh at it. Then why is everyone using it? Why is everyone writing programs for it? Why do most computer networks run off it? Is it because Microsoft came into the computer era at a good time? Is it because they bullied every home user into using their OS? No I think not! How can an OS be so very very bad, yet everyone uses it? Black Helmet Man
