  1. Re:Polish politeness. on Americans Are Scarce in Top Programming Contest · · Score: 1

I tend to agree... I got my high school math education in Poland, and after coming to study Computer Science in USA, I did not have to do much in any of the math and theory computer science classes. Ant that was almost 100% true for my BS and almost true (75%) for my MS. Science subjects in general are just not very popular in this country and the society and media do not help. Just look at how "geeks" are always presented on TV. Finally, look at the big corporations where technology people are usually stuck at some "senior developer/network support" position, and the only way to get ahead is to become a pencil-pusher, who produces tons of presentations and documents with no meaning. I guess, I did not say anything new.

It's true... I feel the real deal is even worse. As someone who lived in a communist country for the first 20 years of my life, I see that corporate talk is just a manifestation of a bigger problem: US (and maybe other too) corporations are like communist countries of the era-long-gone... Employees behave like their citizens used to, managements work like the communist parties, and the talk is just the manifestation of that. Management is always right, even when it is not. And if you have someone's ears, you are the winner, no matter how stupid you are.

  3. I see a different problem... on Dismantling the Myth of IT Being a Dead-End Career · · Score: 2, Insightful

The problem is not the lack of careers, the problem is that most of regular corporations (not hi-tech like Google, and such) have no career path for technology people. You become a programmer, maybe a project lead, but after that you either go into some pencil pushing job and start using some stupid process methodology (like CMMI), which basically means paperwork and more paperwork (and no additional benefits), or you are stuck!!!

Great point. Linux rules, but not for everyone. Win can be a good alternative at home and for not so computer-literate users. However, it is really scarry when large companies (like the one I work for) roll out NT, hog the local network and generally create more problems and annoyances than good, instead of hiring some good computer people and using REAL OS.
