In the 50's, France, under the pressure of the baby boom, build schools out of steel and... plaster and other supposed to be non inflammable, to be quickly available and cheap. The so called "Lycées Pailleron".
As the building got older, some of the materials degraded and became toxic and inflammable. In 1971, one of the school caught fire. The fire spread so fast that the children had no chances excaping. There were ~100 dead. During the 80's it happened a second time, and some less dangerous accident later, the french goverment decided to destroy the old schools and to build the school in concrete.
Such schools might be cheap building, but in the long run they have heavy maintenance... And might also become dangerous if not permanently monitored.
The IVAR line is something you should look at. Extremely versatile and adaptive : it is made of wood, it goes around corners and over doors. And more with some imagination.
One tip : put 30 cm between the wall and the furniture - first you can go behind to setup the wiring, and you have more space for your monitors.
Airlines had started very early with IT (1950's !) and think big (averge : 50000 sets worlwide, even in deepest New Guinea). And the two big points are stability and cost !
Until recently, they were big mainframe users, because of stability and cost efficience.
When the world got rid of the dumb terminals, airlines very relunctantly moved to PC's, but still connected to the mainframe. And they sticked to OS/2 because of its stability... And they still use it ! Windows NT just _starts_ to replace those sets, but the _users_ AND the _sysadmins_ are just pissed off by this instable and poorly equipped OS (no embedded scripting language, not onboard tools, poor automation) ! But the managers love it because it is full of colours, and the M$ marketing brochures are so shiny.
Those days wont last.
Linux based solution emerge everywhere in the airline industry. It is stable and very cost efficient. And with those cash problems that all the airlines are facing, the calculation is very simple (Linux CD for 1000 PC's = 20 USD, 1000 Licenses for Windows = well above 50000 USD). So the change is there and more coming.
Within the next 2 or 3 years, just think when you are airborne : At least a dozen Linux boxes has been involved in your journey, whatever the airline... And mainframes with Linux are a big part of it.

Some big players are missing but is Microsoft doing there ???
Peer 2 peer is new. Let time do, and the filter software will be able to prevent children to see such contents. gnutella clients (for example bearshare) have begun to implement such mechanisms.
Let time do, and the gnutella clients and filter software will create a standard towards filtering adult content out of the sight of children.
But the hammer method (prohibiting peer 2 peer) is definitely the wrong method.
HP Jornada with MP3 Player !
First : It's Windows CE stuff - As we say in german - eeegitt... !
Second : It has a maximum of 64 Mb capacity - only 30 minutes of music. Not much fun
I really prefer my golf of the shelf and something like the CAJUN system for my car (http://cajun.sourceforge.net/)
Most of the secretaries in the companies request a MS Office training because it is the only thing they know and that's where the pain starts. The boss uses then Office, and so do the employees. If the training was done with another office package things would look different. Say : Training on Staroffice, the boss would use it, and the employees also.... For communicating with the outside world, you would use a "neutral" format : RTF, CSV, PDF, etc. conversion could be automated.... This is difficult to achieve, but you have to start somewhere !
I use the names of the characters of douglas adams book "hitchhikers guide to the galaxy". ArthurDent is my machine, arthur as an alias. marvin (the robot) as my firewall, HeartOfGold for my Winsomething machine - with improbabilty field propulsion - same as the well know os - the probability to get a gpf is high... Use you imagination ! IF there is something like (book, movie, etc.), it might be a motivation to use and administer a machine. And the users are pleased with it because they can remeber the names . Just imagine : FS-SINLPA-3 ? Yes a file server... what about Singapour3 ? it's a file server in Singapour, 3rd of the line... Support can then be much easier. Have fun and happy users
Could i have the same thing metric measures. 95% of us would then understand ! And remember : NASA lost MArs Surveyor because english/metric system mix. English measures is like latin : no more used by living beeings ; )
I would say it is a sad thing. One operating system less. Diversity in the computing area is nice thing. M$ always pushes it's monster OS (Yes Monter !). Where OS/2 required 6 files (1 EXE, 1 DLL, 1 Binary Config File, 1 Humand readable config file and 2 helper EXEs) and 400 Kb of harddisk space, the equivalent under a M$ OS (DO$ or MT, Winblows 9x is basically with some itsy bitsy graphics) requires 450 files, 25 Mb space on harddisk (don't ask about memory) and 3000 registry entries. Where is the gain ? intel is happy, and the hard disk makes are happy. Has someone started to developed a environment under Linux to run OS/2 binaries (16 & 32 bits, including PM apps). Tons of **stable** apps would instantly come to linux. My company, as a lot other in germany, sticks to OS/2 for its operative environment. Winblows MT is just for the managers that want to play with a mouse.
Somebody should host the sites (userfriendly, segfault, and bedope) somewhere in europe. taking down a site would then be much harder & everybody would be happy (or least the most of us).

Make your choice !
Then you have to do translation bridging, which basically sucks, and is not working under Linux. With a cisco box it does but still sucks.

Unfortunately, Linus has blocked the inclusion of streams in mainstream kernels...

Erwin (http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=20010812 ) can make a good use of those satellites... :)

The article didn't mention if the new celeron has the ability to in a dual processor configuration.
Does anyone have infos about that ?
