went down a notch. I dont think I could trust any news service who did a report on a report without providing SOME sort of link or reference information(other than NASDAQ I mean) to back it up.
It reads like something out of a checkout-stand rag.

...all the security holes in my software are protected under copyright. If you find one, you cant publish it, nor reproduce it in anyway without writen permission.....
Thats the problem with todays media security. Once someone figures out a way to jimme the lock they blame the locksmith.
His project was quite open and had a resonably sound goal, which was to find weaknesses in the media security system.
If you were going to sell a security system like this wouldnt you want a third party to check your work and find holes before you released it to the mass market? (and as a bonus it was free (comparatively) to them).
Hell they should have funded the project or sponsored one of there own so as to try to avoid that whole DeCSS thing.
But this is the real world and in the real world we put locks on things to keep honest people honest and anyone who says "The emporer has no cloths!" gets thrown in jail. Well at least thats the threat.
But I have to admit, this is not the way I expected this case to go.
I'm getting really sick of people who think that...
Well not really sick just amused at people who are critical of others posts without giving an alternative way of doing things.
Here, I will show you what I mean:
[example]     I'm getting really sick... (yadda) apt-get (yadda)... is ever a good answer to a general question.
Instead you should give them something a bit more usefull like:
Most distibutions have there own packaged and branded Gnome distro in your favorite package management scheme, tho usually slightly behind the cutting edge stuff.
You might try looking at your Linux distros web site to see if they have anything available for download. [/example]
So basically if you want people to live up to your standards then have some standards worthy of living up to. If you don't understand the difference, quit posting here.:)
Actually I am just kidding, you all post what you want, I just found it rather funny. Besides, this is looking like a self perpetuating arguement.
For selling 100 disk changers with the ability to program large playlists and the ability to skip over some disks all together.
We will no longer be able to play Godsmack over and over while skipping over all those John Denvers.
but measureing how likely a specific version of netscape will segfault at any given second might be usefull to those thinking of chancing an upgrade.
Actually this is a silly idea. There is already a system in place in most companies that should suffice. It goes by many names but we call it the "Decent, Obtuse, Hellish!" System or DOH! for short.
Maybe someone could explian how they intend to get gas ( natural or otherwise ) out of the pipeline? Assuming they can build anywhere near it.... If memory serves ( probably doesnt ) Alaska has no refineries. And when you do have refined material traveling through a pipeline it is done in semi regular intervals switching between different types of fuel seprated by scouring devices. But it seems in this case *thinking back to third grade* she is shiped in the crude or close to it. Thats a far cry from natural gas. I could easily be wrong but thats just what I remember of it.
The second problem is that the cable that was just put in a couple years ago (I asume thats the one they are talking about being the ONLY one) would never support 1/2 a million servers + the customers it was put in for without retooling. That would mean picking up the cable and replacing the repeaters and the like.
The third problem with this silly article:
Anyone who has spent much time in Alaska will probably agree with the fact that NOTHING is reliable in Alaska. At least it wasnt in the twenty some odd years I spent there. Have things changed? Do they intend to change them? Can they make my vehicle start in the morning during the winter months so I can go the three miles to work?
Well, three things are for sure. It will not be less expensive to build. It will not be less expensive to operate. It will not be more reliable. So what are they trying to prove again?
I have to doubt the legitimacy of the article at this point, or maybe the legitimacy of the company promoting the idea.
-- Ideas are not true or false, just good or bad ---
Nah. Lets look at the email in general for a bit. It generally encourages you, the individual, to turn in suspected criminals.. and tho it does not say it, it does sort of give the impression that anyone requesting PC's without an OS should be suspect. (Keep a watchfull eye out for them sofware commies, they could be living next door!).
I believe this is a result of MS's license police running out of obvious people to harrass so they need our help in finding more people to 'investigate'. With our help Mc Gruff can take a bite out of non-MS licensed cpu sales.
Will they come knocking on your house door in the middle of the night?
Probably not soon, but give them time. They are just going after the juicy fish now, but the witch hunt will only get bigger and better from here as we turn each other in, brother against sister, calling MS Piracy hotline anytime we dont like our landlord or competition. Are you afraid to use the same serial for win98 on two machines? Probably not yet but you will be, which is what they intend.
I think he might have been saying something to the effect that choice is a good thing for the customer. Do you want vanilla or strawberry today?
The cost of supporting both flavors may be greater but you will likely reach a bigger audience.
Besides, when was the last time you built a win32 app that ran on millinium/98 and win2k/NT?
You usually have to throw in version/platform specific code into your application just to support windows. There is nothing standard about windows accross versions yet they sell both strains at the sametime.
Besides, it is entirely posible to build applications for linux that run just fine under both envirenments. Wine runs fine under either yes? Using desktop (KDE/GNOME) features is entirly optional.

Oh, and here is the pretty part... When you register your favorite word with Open Dic, you can charge others when they incorporate your word into theirs. Its a win win situation for everyone.
On the downside, you can only use your new word in conversation with people who use Open Dic. So convince your freinds to make Open Dic there language reference of choice.

The ISN is in the tcp header. If you encrypt the header you wont get very far off your local wire.
The header is obviously needed in order to still call it tcp, but you might slow down an attacker by obscuring the contents of the packet.
Personally I think it is silly to rely on the ISN for security at all. Methinks they should start the session on a random number (becouse its easy to do) and then move on to the next idea for increased security. Quit pestering the poor ISN and work on some real security. Maybe something like "Kerberos Inside" or something more substantial.
Oh, one more thing slightly offtopic for this post, What the heck is he doing by saying that 'there is a problem but what it is no one can say and I aint telling'. If you cant tell us your secret then why bring it up at all? Reminds me of the favorite childhood game "I know something you dont know, nener nener".
And who are these lucky vendors? We are building systems for ip over satalite and we have to muck around in the stack all the time. We have to ship these babies sometime soon. Is he expecting me to call him up, give him some cash so that he can tell me his secret? People that hold the world hostage for money should be condemned to live a life of poverty.
You hold the copyright which means they have a couple choices. They can go the GPL route which means they should probably release their changes being that the government is hardly 'private (closet) implementation'. Or, alternatively they can ask you permission to use the source. Under the latter there is normally a sigificant fee involved. You own it, they wish to use it. Thats the bottom line. You will get no kudos for being a nice guy here. They should definately pay for the priveledge just like the next guy. Or do you wish to make a voluntary contribution to the government? Not a bad thing really, just dont go into it thinking you owe them.
Remeber, they are the buyer, not your employer (in this context )
I think you're missing the whole point of not enforcing the patent.
By claiming the patent they can add to their net worth. Symantec gets to be in the news ( dont believe me? Just look it up on slashdot ). They protect themselves from someone else doing the same thing against them ( remember amazon.com? ).
But, the meat will likely turn rancid if they try to enforce the patent. If they were to challenge someone who was doing something similar ( Insert random networked software here ) then they will likely lose the case and maybe even eventually lose the claim. If that were to happen then they lose face, lose networth, and maybe, just maybe some customers.
In short, they likely win all they can win by claiming the patent but not enforcing. They lose if they give anyone a chance to challenge their claim. IMHO this is simply not a card Symantec can play.
As a share holder I am sure you want Symantec to have all the networth they can muster.
On an OFFTOPIC note: If they were to win in court then I am going to enforce my patent on controlled inbalance as a form of motivation (i.e. walking).

Acording to inside sources they have been performing routine genetic experimentation. Not really the test tube stuff but rather just selective breeding (which we should all practice).
The results have been mixed. Though they have managed to gain lower level management with superior intelect it has also produced a great number of ergonimists with only an index finger and thumb.

All I need is an excuse and I install a modified RH distro. Why not? I dont need to approve it with anyone. No one has to buy anything so no purchase requests. There is no 30 man hours involved with buying NT just becouse I need a file server out of a PC. It saves tax dollars and lots of them.
It saves me massive amounts of time becouse there is always something wierd I need to do with the network like simulating a custom device. Try to do that quickly with NT. Save more tax dollars.
It can have a lot of services added and subtracted on the fly without spending a lot of time trying to fill out the purchase request and having meetings about it (I never count them, the meetings about what should be trivial things depress me).
It makes the very expensive operation go much more smoothly and without an even heavier pricetag attached to it. Tax payers IMNSHO should feal good about the whole thing.
But the point is, if it works for the government, why can't this work for a corp. ?
Why must this be viewed as insidious?
Earlier today The CEO of The Devil (tm) corporation made a statement regarding this issue after hearing it on a local station.
He basically stated (paraphrase) "The MPAA has little ground to stand on as they are basically saying that any comercial device that reads content delivered to consumers via the standard methods must adhear to their copyright protection rules."
"But that would be infringing upon The Devil's teritory as we hold the patent on ones and zeroes, thusly it would translate to saying that they regulate any content delivered using our patented methods."
According to Satan, Devil Corp has held the patent on ones and zeroes for a little more than a millenium with no chance of expiration as it was gained before the expiration rules were in place, effectively giving them 'grandfather rights. This would seem to preempt Microsofts claim to the patent.
Later in the interview Satan indicated that he might be willing to make a trade to the MPAA and their followers but the price would be very steep.
When asked what the exact price might be he said that The Devil would be willing to offer them the same deal they offer anyone.
Think about this for a sec.
