    (offtopic)
When I first arrived at this job under two years ago, I was limited in the number of non MS servers I was allowed to provide. Just 1.5 years later, ditching windows wholesale is near a reality as it is 'too hard to support our driver and our hardware' (quote from management) for windows users.
A few years ago it was being argued on /. that geeks had no real control. I say we have decent control now that us ageing geeks have positions of influence. Do not lose hope, the only real fear should be what platform you will chose when everyone uses a Unix lookalike...

  11. languages and (unrelated) client security on Designing Multiplayer Game Engines? · · Score: 1

If you want your server to scale then you should probably consider plain old C. Maybe C++ if you if you are bent that way. I would suggest (flamebait, I know) that no other language will give you the goods that you may find yourself needing. Build it on a BSD/Linux PC but then suddenly find this baby needs to run on an Ultrasparc, and C will be your friend. Build it in C# and try to get a bunch of little machines to do the work of one good one i.e. you could be screwed.
One offtopic word of warning. Do not allow the clients to send data to each other. Ever. Dont take that shortcut. Otherwise the cheaters will ruin whatever you build.

  14. Gov't is the only valued target? on Bush Wants an Unhackable Private Network · · Score: 1

It seems to me that it would be foolish to think that a country that is heavily dependant on the Internet, could not be brought to its knees by attacking the commerce bearing infrastructure. This smacks a little less like 'Fortress USA' and more like 'Fortress US Gov't'.
I guess it just seems like a short sighted approach. Its not even a quick fix, just a narrow view.

  15. Negative reinforcement on Fink Maintainer Steps Down Due To GPL Infringment · · Score: 1

I would not presume to have the knoweledge to fix all the problems he has identified in the 'Give for free, everyone benifits' proccess.
But it is something that most of us believe in for our own reasons. And becouse of that I would suggest that maybe developers need more positive reinforcement in what they do. Most of us (me included) only think to give feedback when we want something more or we think they are doing something badly.
What about when we agree with what they are doing or when they are doing something well?
You have to admit that when everything you see in hear about what you are doing is negative, you gain negative feelings about what you are doing.

She doesnt realize that it's not the size of your clock that matters but how you use it.
To support that claim I give you the common misnomer that the famous Intel with his huge 1Ghz clock can outperform the lesser known Sun with a 450 Mhz clock.
Yes I could mention bus speed, or instructions per cycle etc.. but that wouldn't be funny now would it?

Its probably a good idea to move away from cycles as a measure of performance. I mean, which would you want: A 3Ghz i386 or a 1.6ghz athlon?
Cycles != performace. But it does give a clue and a half as to how a CPU is going to perform against a like CPU.
A 300mhz pIII will likely be roughly 1/2 the speed
of a 600mhz pIII (disregard any bus speeds or other bottle necks).

  25. same ol stuff on IBM Creates 1st Single Molecule Computer Circuit · · Score: 1

Not to detract from there accomplishment, I am sure they really did do it if they said they did it and this is really exciting stuff.
But IBM is not unaccustom to doing this sort of press release simply for the publicity of it.
I seem to remember a press release (which they had to buy add space to get it published I guess) back in the early 90's. 92 or 93 maybe. They claimed to have created the worlds first 1024 bit cpu.
I wouldnt suggest they are building this stuff for PR. I am just saying that is the purpose of the press release (just like most articles of this sort). Oh ya, someones cool project at IBM needs to keep getting funding of course.
Just dont assume it will be useable for anything practicle in OUR lifetime.
It took 20 years to get from 8 bit to 64 bit. And most of us use 32 bit just like we did 10 years ago.(this refers to commodity hardware, not the big iron).
Ah screw it.Never mind. Its cool stuff no matter what the press geeks do with it.
