That would be wrong Linux is the kernel nothing less and nothing more. RedHat 6.2 is a OS that is the OS that Oracle supports. Debian is a OS it used the same kernel and many of the same tools as RedHat but it is *not* the same OS. There is more to the OS then the kernel. Also if you are running a Oracle server on a RH x.0 release you are insane. Redhat will support 6.2 for a *very* long time because they understand and are honest about this point.
That is the way it is on *any* platform for applications like this. Oracle does not claim to support or have their products ready to be used on "Linux" They have support for it on RH 6.2. You will find that in the winders world they specify service packs. And that for other flavors of Unix they specify versions, patches, and kernel parameters. With big time software this is the way it works. And truth be told that is the way it should be. Simply put if Oracle tried to support and run on every possible version of every platform out there it would not be too long untill they could not really support or run on anything.
Please don't encourage them to make them like the Nvidia drivers. I have come to peace with the fact that I will never have the OSS Nvidia drivers that I really do want. But the least they could do is modify the license so that someone could take the binary bits and package them and serve them up with something like apt. I mean forcing me to go to the site and get them is just braindead not to hard but it bugs me. In any case what I meant was a clue in that they opened everything so that OSS drivers where pretty easy to write. They might have other issues and I do agree it is time for another card.
The GPL does *not* place something in the public domain. The kernel *does* belong to Linus just as every piece of software under the GPL belongs to whoever places it under the GPL. Of course you can fork it the GPL gives you that right but Linus does own the code. In fact the whole concept of the GPL is based on the idea of copyright law it just happens to be a sane implementation of copyright law. Don't worry about it many people don't understand this. Here is a thought get a copy of the GPL and read it. It will make these things much easier for you to understand.
over and over again that he does not care where the kernel goes. He only works on what he thinks is cool. I'm thinking that the people who use the PPC stuff are doing a good job and Linus is simply doing what he wants to.
Now that is very cool and the drivers are GPL. Honestly since I don't want a MP3 player I've not looked at or read anything much about these things. But how can one company that has such a clue when it comes to drivers for the SBLive have it so wrong on this device? In any case this one from Compaq looks pretty sweet.
From one former ISP tech to another.:) Welcome brother and you are dead on right. The nice thing about the Supra's is that they had pretty good drivers. This made them usable. When I was doing ISP support we had many users with the Lucent things. We found a good set of drivers that worked with our stuff and advised users to use those they worked. The Packard Hell modems did the same thing as the MWaves and they where hellish. Some of the other ones we could not get to work. Drivers are key. My Supra worked very well. Having said that I still prefer a good old external modem over just about everything *very* easy to troubleshoot. And of course my Cisco 675 is *very* sweet.:)
The maximum would be 50. If you have 50 you can get modded up for a week. If you get modded down your karma goes to 49. Therefore the answer is no, no, no. Because the max is 50 and many of us are there.
I must say that I do agree but of course everyone really knows that Gopher is where it_is_at_! I've gone back to Usenet a couple of time recently looking for some stuff and must say it is looking better. Wish I had a mod point for you.
Ok I'm going to feed the troll. Desktop sales are in the tank and have been for a long time. Servers is where it is at and servers are where M$ can not compete without using monopoly power. M$ is losing in the server room and with the exception of Sun Linux is beating everything else hands down. And Sun is working to keep ahead. Pretty damn good for a "hobby"
"was brought down..."
While I *do* think that good and economics will win in the end and Microsoft will at best exist as a shadow of what it is now it is *really* early to talk about their decline and fall in the past tense. It would be better to say that this will be one of the factors that will bring balance to the market and cause everyone to have to compete based on merit instead of marketing buck and monoply power. But don't go using the past tense just yet.
Yup if you want to give up being able to customize your GUI and all of the advantages of *nix because god forbid you might have to think and learn your apps. I've got a news flash for you the Windows GUI is horrible it is just what many people know and they have convinced themselves that it does not suck. Take a couple of hours to set your Linux box up well you will save yourself days with the time you can save and all the other things that work better. AA text can only make this better and is a *really* good idea. My GUI (E + Gnome + the Irix theme) work very well thank you very much and because I took a few minutes to learn it it all works like I expect it to. In contrast Windows "feels" broken to me.
Linux the choice of smart people!!
This is a nice explanation with examples. Those screenshots are better looking then Kobe Tai and Jenna Jameson in a shoot with each other. I want it and I want it now.
Say Amen brother. I run a total of 8 virtual desktops on my Debian box. At any one time ~6 of those just have great big xterms. Once you take the time to learn it the shell *really* is the best way to do many things. And if you have to do phone support for *nix it is a godsend. All terminals look the same no worrying about how to describe their gui to them just have them type.
has really been sucking anyway and looks like they might start blocking the international calls they said I could not make in the first place I think I'll have to sign up and become a node and buy one for my sister-in-law. This is *very* cool and the telcos can go screw themselves.
Why pray tell are you running at such a low resolution and why are you satisfied with such a low framerate. I for one will not be happy with anything less than 1280x1024 and ~70-80 fps. So no this chip is far from the final chip.
in the vi vs. Emacs deal. I have to agree. As a sysadmin type I also make the choice based on a couple of other factors. Over a slow SSH connection vi is faster and feels more responsive. The same goes for editing a couple of lines in a config file. But if I have to edit something long or more then a few lines I find Emacs to better suit my style of working (this is somewhat because I learned a evil editor in my youth and did not see how good vi was untill the last year or so.)
Have you ever tried to read something on a monitor? Well before 30 pages your eyeballs will start to bleed. Printing out while sometimes a good option just does not cut it. The simple fact is to duplicate a book you need a bunch of real world stuff. Those who create it do get compensted they get to make that first sell everything that happens to it after that as long as one person in one place has it is fair use. The simple fact of the matter is Pat and her gang just would like to get every penny they can out of everyone. When they try to come after my local used book shop I *will* be there. This is evil.
using Rubberhose. Make the government arrest us all get all the keys we can remember (and if fact all the keys we have) and they still can't prove that they have everything. That would be very cool and make it clear just how pointless trying to ban encryption is. The only way to put a end to this will be for a whole bunch of us to go to the mat for it. Should be fun if nothing else.:)

I think there should be a moderation option for
"No sense of humor at all"
It was funny for gawds sake!

You should read Earth by David Brin. Small black holes are *not* toys and you don't get to play with any.
But the best is when you get a story on the front page. That is the big score!!! :)

Yup, I got it yesterday with my daily apt-get dist-upgrade. All hail Debian.

This is true and is a *very* good thing. I mean hell you can fire vi on a Debian box even before the install is done.
Why pray tell are you running at such a low resolution and why are you satisfied with such a low framerate. I for one will not be happy with anything less than 1280x1024 and ~70-80 fps. So no this chip is far from the final chip.

In truth no it is still up. I just grabbed it. Not as cool as you would think really hard to read. :(
