This is genuine curiousity, here. I've heard that spain allows it's police more power than here in the US.

Since you seem to have at least visited Spain, can you tell me if the police have regulations on the max time a person can be held; do they have to inform the suspect of his crime, rights, etc.; and, in general, what's your take on them.

You know, public speaking used to be a big thing. Good speakers would get crowds of people listening, even if they disagreed--just because they spoke well. And this got issues going. Every major movement in American history had some great speakers behind it to get the message around.

Without actually any real statistics--just a rough idea of history--the increase in apathy among the educated may well be linked to the fall of good public speaking.

We've replaced speaking with sound bytes. Who wouldn't become bitter and apathetic?

    Just a thought.

  13. Capitalism on Technology And The Fast Food Nation · · Score: 1

"...there has to be a balance between the prosperity of the market and the morality of the market..."

What is the whole point of capitalism, and why did communism not work?

The point of capitalism is to use greed for public good. In the rare case that standard business doesn't satisfy the majority of people, the government modifies market conditions so a corporation willing to do anything to make money will have to do good deeds to break profit. There's no point in calling big corps greedy and immoral--we all know it. But it's a good thing. That's the point. By trying to make money, they make everyone happy.

Why did communism not work? Communism expected everyone to work for the good of the country, and with no more incentive than that. Workers work for the good cause, managers for the good cause, gov. owned business for the good cause.... It broke down because greed is the only effective driving force for business; and they eliminated it.

I have exactly the opposite preference. I want a bare-bones MB to add my own cards to--like a good BX. Designers have been trying to usurp the BX's throne by throwing in everything, but fail to realize what most people want is a simple board, an add on sound card, add on video card, add on drive controller, etc.
