Having had to run around and help clean screwed up machines twice this year. Hit by zero day virus outbreaks I firmly belive that the only thing a virus scanner is good for is telling you that you are already screwed and usually after the fact.
What we really need is some script kiddie with a attitude release one of these worms with a truely destructive payload, then and only then are we gonna see any real change. Imagine something like a code red worm that stayed alive long enough to propigate itself say 48 hours then destroyed anything on the disk, or flashed the bios with crap if it could.
The only real fix is to fix the darn OS, as it sits right now most of clients connected to the internet are a train wreck just waiting to happen.
There is a much, much quicker fix for this. If I was the CEO of Symantec I would have my secretary get Bill on the phone. The conversation would go something like this.
Symantec CEO: Hi Bill how are you today!
Bill: Very good what can I help you with.
Symantec CEO: Bill I will cut to the chase I want you to stay out of the security market.
Bill: Nope we are going to kill Symantec.
Symantec CEO: Ok if you want to be like that we are going to release a immediate update to our suite on monday. With this update we are going to bundle a copy of the new version of Open Office.
Bill: Ok we will take it off the list, have a very fine day, how about a all expenses paid trip to bermuda.
These CEO's just don't know how to fight fire with fire.
Luben disagreed with linus but picked the worst possible target to back his claim. He used the scsi specs to claim that specs are necessary so that two hardware vendors can create hardware that interoperates properly. Obviously he has never seen the exception lists for the scsi hardware within the kernel. I understand where Luben is comming from but as Linus stated it is far from reality.
Yes you know what it will cost money to migrate, however not migrating will eventually cost you more. It is really simple, pay once now or pay MS for eternity. In addition to paying loose the ability to do with your documents as you see fit.
I don't care how you look at it, MS is dead wrong for not supporting their customers needs by offering ODF format as a default file format. It is MS's choice not to support ODF and it is MA's choice not to buy their office suite.
Nobody can put forth a valid argument that MA is somehow doing something wrong with their decision to go with ODF.
I built a couple of apps already using a combination of qooxdoo, sajax and jason. I see myself doing many more, you can do some amazing interfaces with that combination.
I don't know what navy you where in but in the one I was in (US) there are no mission critical windows systems unless you are talking about word processing or email being a critical function. All mission critical systems are either some sort of unix and or custom stuff.
As much as I hate to admit, the problem is not the quantity but the quality of those tech workers. Over the last 10 years or so I am willing to bet that less than 10% of programmers, sysadmins etc even have a clue. How many of those around you can even program a web application or even know basic html dialect. How many of them know that a web server runs on port 80 or even what a port is? How many are fluent in more than one structured language? How many of them even know how to formulate a simple sql query. How many of them spend a hour or so every night keeping on top of the skills that make them desireable in the workplace.
Yes the H1B visa program needs to be killed, it's only purpose is to cheapen the workforce. By doing so you will provide incentive to perhaps elevate these marginal techies.
Actually they where just a follower web services and even xml based web serivices where in use years before they joined the game. They did not lay out the soap standard they assisted in making it more convoluted to model it to a com environment.
If you don't understand what a open and useable document format I urge you to listen to the MA open format meeting. This is about nothing more than storage of a document is a fashion that allows everyone equal access. MS can choose to implement the standard or they can choose not to. It is about preserving the sovernty of data owned and created by the MA govt.
I highly doubt MS is going to support this document format as it will not only undermine their proprietary lock in advantage but accellerate it's demise.
The audio transcript is outstanding and shows that MA fully understands the implications of their decision.
They are just pissed because google has the nerve to run their data center on a better platform...that and they cannot sell them any windows license's.
I have to quickly patent the tin foil lined wallet which will keep hackers from obtaining my card information remotely....yea I will call it the FireWallet
Actually if you read the MA specification it says that the office suite must support setting it's default save format to the open document standard. This way they cannot try to force the doc format over the open format.
This has nothing to do with backward compatability, forward compatibility, embedding objects etc.
It is all about controlling the end users document either through locked in formats, patents whatever. Maintaining a lock on the format means sustaining and maintaining on the monopoly. Loose that control and the business is threatened.
The sleazy tactics of trying to exclude GPL by crafty licensing backfired on them in a enormous way. Had they loosened the grip a little they may have still been a player. They played the wrong card this time and lost, but then again the customer chose freedom so they loose either way.
Trying to lock out GPL's software with their little patents and UELA back fired on them in a big way this time. Had they actually proposed a open format in which anyone could play they could have perhaps even strengthed their market. Instead the worst possible outcome has happened the customer turned their back on them. Instead those dirty tactics may have just spelled the end or at least hastened their demise.
Don't think the rest of the states will not follow it is in the best interests of the people. Yes they have plenty of bribery money but it is a no brainer to support a open document format.
Sure they can co-exist until we "replace" them. I don't work for a software house we use software not produce it. Nearly all proprietary software is a royal pain in my butt and the faster it is obsoleted with OSS software the better.
Take for instance the other day we upgrade a piece of software then immediately run into trouble since the vendor decided to make more money so he put some sort of per page processing keys in it and changed the licensing requirements. Two days of production down time while sorting that out. I am now in the process of finding a oss alternative to his product or I will write an new oss alternative....I don't feel bad not one bit for software shops going out of business because of OSS products.

Might help if I spelled shit right.
Somebody has a case of Dyslexia it appears, it should read like this.

Maybe NX or perhaps a ajax interface to OO running on the back end.
I imagine a great deal of furniture is gonna be abused today.
Now if you really want to take a real bite out of MS then put a link to
it right on the front of the google home page.

If you or I had that kind of money we would be donating a hell of alot of it also..why you ask?....so the damn IRS would not eat you alive.

You want to build one killer ass web ui go have a look at these...
qooxdoo.sourceforge.net
and combine that with json and sajax

Take a couple of these and a fist full of transitors
(linear amp) and it will communicate well over a mile.

Actually a java script widget set like qooxdoo combined with a ajax library like sajax punks asp.net to all hell and back.
So tell me "idiot" you are trying to tell me my php app even running on linux cannot authenticate to AD?
..... ba ha ha ha hah ha
Sorry I tried not to use the word "idiot" but it is the only thing I could find that was fitting for the parent post.
I bet you use Front Page for all your development work also
