    The books are a bit of a disaster (through I believe the English translations not much cop) and I never brought the portrayal of Lisbeth Salander as a hacker some of the tech that Stieg Larsson claimed was so cutting edge or may be Sweden is that far behind - El reg has done a good takedown.

    Primes are descend from the ITS system and have serious hacker credentials

    I recall working on Pr1mes back in the 80's at one point at BT we had 17 750's (the largest non black installation in the country) and i had level 6 (root) on all of them plus level 7 (bendy root ) on the billing systems (13 and 02) which used map reduce back then!

    The trick was not turning them off if you could at all avoid it and using specialized valves (tubes)

    Note i said "perceived" I woudl wager that that is what the average SV employee in tech would say - how would these states feel having a large number of non white h1b engineers moving in.

    Easier to corrupt if you have hundreds of small bodies to corrupt - the UK got rid of its rotten boroughs in 1832

    But moving to states (perceived to be) full of racists and nut-jobs with poor labor laws is going to help - how part of what makes SV successful is that Non competes are not enforceable.

    Of course not its all those greasy engineers getting above ourselves - and daring to get almost to say 70% of what a lawyer or MD would earn.

    I do wonder if part of this is racialism against those from India who are the most visually obvious techies who work at SV companies.

    I recall tidying up and adding meaningful prompts to one Senior guys FORTRAN IV code that run the sampling on our mixing rigs at BHRA - his original code 's interface was ? and you entered integer numbers for options which he had memorized eg 1 to run 2 to quit and so on. That was when using mixed case in Hollerith statements was considered a bit flash.

    Luckily at RBI I had 3/4 spare pc's I could convert to test/linux boxes then again i worked in a small team and had a director as a boss. At home I am just setting up a hp microserver to run a small virtulised hadoop cluster. I also have done the formal Cisco CCNA to expand my knowledge and to help with being a full stack developer.

    Its not C++ and OO and for some reason C++ devs seem not to want to learn fortran for technical programming which is still fortrans main use

    Apparently in the UK at least one stolen BT van was used by thieves as cover in the past

    ah you mean like the tax break that the UK government gave that equated to an 8% tax free yield for rich middle class people - paid by the poor people who dont have either a suitable site or a spare 8-10 k to spend.
