I recently called up my DSL provider (Covad vice Toad.net) and asked about the whole situation since Northpoint was going under, and the whole nine yards. I had assurances from our DSL coordinator that Covad would at minimum, be around until late 2002 and is expected a rosier financial situation in early 2002. Granted, I only have 2 months left in my current apartment and don't have too much to worry about, but it's not like they're packing it up just yet, folks. Let's not get too freaked out yet.

Not entirely true with DVD Studio Pro (Apple's other DVD Mastering Product) which will let you change around the VBR (Variable Bit Rate) encoding and quality levels, allowing you to tweak your DVD to a fare-thee-well. So, if you don't mind VHS quality...how about 12 hours of video?
Want to see the entire first season of Babylon 5 on a DVD? Hack your Tivo to interface with a Mac w/ DVD Studio Pro.
This is a good point, but I think it's the best that they can expect. As someone who is still skeptical about online trading (I still have my reservations...), I think that the RIAA may not go for this, but hey, it's better than nothing.
Please dude, you're making me ill. Marathon was far and away one of the BEST shooters in the early days. It had a plot, it had AMAZING network play, it had good sequels (M2:Durandal I think was the first game to do jumping and swimming, IIRC) and was just a damn fine series. Your just jealous because only M2 was ported to the PC.
Perhaps your memory is a bit foggy...Dark Forces wasn't nearly the tour-de-force that Marathon was. Marathon did in fact, run full screen on the original powermac, the 6100/60. There was a console that was non-retractable, but it had the inventory screen, and more importantly, the motion radar. Besides, Dark Forces had crap for plot, and didn't spawn a pair of now-fully-cross-platform, sequels.
I tried this little piece of logic while I was a student in college. The University can, should it so choose, allow anyone into your residence (provided that they are your landlord), at any time, should proper University Officials (anyone they deem necessary), authorize entry. I own a rapier, it's a rather imposing piece of steel, but it is unsharpened, and remains in its scabbard, yet they decided it was a deadly weapon, and they could confiscate it without
Telling me.
Telling me when I could get it back.
Leaving a receipt to say they had it.
Ridiculous. The Universities own their students, as long as they live in their dorms. What's worse is when you don't have a choice to live elsewhere (like where I went to school).
There are three teachers I've had that have knocked my socks off, taught me things that I'd not known possible some years before, and brought me closer to the pursuit of Knowledge.
Bob Ross, teacher of American Studies at Davis Senior High School, was able to give us a clear view into the past not by lecturing endlessly, but instead by forcing us to discuss the past through the lens of the present. His tests would leave students shuddering, but his grading was fair. You knew he read all your papers all the way through, mostly because he wrote a response to every one. Thank you for inspiring an interest in local politics.
Dr Andy Katz and Dr. Jules Steinberg served as my mentors and teachers in the Political Science Department at Denison University. They are two of the wisest, most fascinating men I've ever met. Their styles, different and unique, they often taught in classrooms where the apathetic and the bored stayed away, for fear they might be called upon and have to defer. Each made relationships with all their students, knowing them all by name, knowing where they were from and what they did in their spare time, they could make even the most abstract concept (postmodern deconstructionism) seem straightforward and clear. Thank you gentlemen for giving me the ability to read cogently, to form thoughts intelligently, and be responsible for my own opinions and thoughts.
I bought a Yamaha receiver this fall to power my home theatre. It's got S-Video switching, Digital Optical ins, and was 350 watts, I got it for like USD$240 at Sears. Does well. Now all I need is speakers that rawk.
Do you know anything about Mac OS X? It's been designed from the ground up to be more like WinNT in terms of features. The built in terminal application handles telnet, handles ping and other network tools, in otherwords, you're badly misinformed. Read up on OS X hereor here. Then come back and talk some more.
But is that in fact legitimate use at all? I don't always read what I get in the regular mail, yet there's no way for someone to tell, remotely, if I did read it. Why should there be in the email world?
1. Firewire.
This is probably the best thing I can ever remember them using... It's the best external connection to rival external SCSI I've seen... course if they could just modify the cost to be a bit lower (for devices) than it would be real sweet...
FireWire = Digital Video. Hellllooooo Non-Linear Editing! Woo hoo!
So? Optical mouse may be nice at some things, but I know lots of desktop publishing people & artists that hate that part about the newest mac's
I don't think that's entirely fair. As someone who spends a great deal of time over his mouse (NLE work, constantly) I'm a big fan of the new optical mouse. I didn't like the puck, which is where you could be getting confused.

Let's not forget that MOSR was the same group that SWORE that we were *this close* to having a Mac-branded Palm at MWSF 2000. Grain of salt dude, these guys have ZERO reliability.
I don't think we can judge what C|Net is saying until after Expo starts and Steve goes one way or the other...these early releases are subject to fact-distortion since they're just from "sources" and not from Apple themselves.
I'm betting kiam to kittycats that Steve will have an update to the Public Beta and a lot more info on OS X, I expect a release for MacWorld Tokyo in February, or at WWDC in May.
I had the chance to see this movie at the Pentagon City Loews Theater in the DC area yesterday....it blew my fscking mind. All I can say is that Yeoh deserves an Oscar, the guy who shot the film should be canonized, and Ang Lee is the world's most underrated genius. There are few movies that I, or my roommate for that matter, will go back to *The Very Next Day*, which is exactly what we did. The sword play is unbelievably choreographed...it makes the Matrix looks like something I might work up in my spare time....and Trinity is a pansy compared to Michelle Yeoh. Unreal movie, go see it if it's around you.
I may not get the daily 30 minutes of aerobic level exercise recommended by doctors, nor do I get the chances (mainly because I can't afford them) to lift weights in a prescribed manner, I am still is good health. Normal blood pressure, cholesterol level, resting heart beat. It's just I carry around some extra weight. So don't get pissed at me when I eat a fucking steak, jeesus christ.
I would like to change my weight, not because it would make me more healthy (I'm healthy already) but because it would make stronger my professional relationships (which btw, still are based on sight, much to some of our chagrins...). However, at the same time, I don't think that drastic changes in my habits (like say, becoming vegan, or going on the Atkins diet) or suddenly shocking my body into health. So, I'll exercise slowly, but still eat my steaks on the weekend (one a week can't kill you, trust me).
To be quite honest, I'm perfectly healthy. My cholesterol is in the healthy range, my blood pressure is normal, I just pack a few extra (okay 30) pounds on my body. I'm okay with it, you should be too. I'm tired of all these fitness psychos telling me I have to be thin, when that's not who I am, or who I've ever been.
I'm mainly talking about the whole lunchtime deal, I manage well enough in the evening time to cook for myself (I am a master at the can of soup) or prepare a salad that does taste great (mmmm jicama) but hey, part of me always wants that medium rare porterhouse, is that so bad?

Not true at all. I have the PB and Terminal is in there. Apple wouldn't pull it from the final version if they left it in the Beta.
