or ummm... so I tell the ladies... but if I'm not mistaken, going from C to C# is the jaws theme ain't it? Ya know... when something's creeping towards the naked lady in the water?;)
The lesson, he said, is that the value of going open source rises as the price of the boxed software falls. However, the crowd didn't seem to buy it.
I mean... honestly... I think that we're going to find that *quality* is motivated by money. While we can get ADD programmer types to get interested in linux now, what about when their grandmother is having problems with USB or something? Will we still see programmers interested in programming for a market-saturated product *for free?!* I think that we'll see GPL programmers wanting more interesting things to do, perhaps. Something they can really get glory for.
Everyone knows that Webpads are the next big thing, mp3 boxes... and American's black box mentality just sucks... in Europe AV devices are colorful...
Anyway... I think companies are missing the boat on this one... they never have features, or if they do, they're basically f'd up computers with proprietary features.
Here's some advice for mp3 box people: Linux with SAMBA, drag and drop mp3s onto it via 100mb ethernet, and give us a full screen display that you can read even in Picture-In-Picture... or give us a nice LCD, and simple remote... don't comprimize and make us juggle whatever paradigm you thought would be cool...
Honestly they should... I always hated kids in school that'd say shit about me, but it was their right, and its our right to interpreit and mock.
Impersonation is the (some say) greatest form of flattery, and PETA should just appreciate their name in the press. What ethics, and what crap... I for one won't visit their site 'cause I might make fun of it in my mind, and they might come after me.
The show right after Cartalk, "Whad'ya Know" at notmuch.com is really really funny... and In reply to some others on this thread, I totally love the shows they mentioned, and PHC is a variety/drama show... its a nice american/folk theme...
I'm so glad that DA was very *appropriate* with his answers... Very quick, short, and to the point... its nice to see that he was willing to tease us a bit with plans, as well as give Slashdot back some humor with a few answers (like the last one!)
I totally agree with English literature to be rather anti-heroic in US standards... this is a constant theme in Brit Lit, and I think quite a nice mindset, and would be a large part of HHGTTG's appeal to me.
Americans are too power/glory hungry, and the anti-hero theme gave me insight into balance, and acceptance of life, instead of living in a fantasy world.
National public radio, and Public Radio International have amazing shows... All Things Considered and Morning Edition on NPR are *by far* better than most TV news shows I know of... and programs like A Prairie Home Companion illustrate quality culture in radio that I wouldn't miss.
before a worm? I mean literally... gnutella had a nasty worm, and people are already writing things to match your search queries... how long before something nasty comes off of AOL (er.. besides their customers?)
Plug & Play has acheived some stability, but I can just imagine conflicts of PnP device names and the nightmare it's going to cause... still plug and pray? Or will linux finally make sense of automatic hardware configuration?
Chipmakkers have been doing the the same old x86 for how long? and what are they doing with it? Simple: optimization, refining, and speed enhancements...
Software has a long ways to go to become better... yes you don't need more features in Word, but hell... the damn thing could run faster, load faster, etc... lots of software needs refining, and tasteful simplification. I wish I had half the features in word in something that felt like notepad...
Ya know... Pennsylvania is weird... a friend of mine works with GTE, and phone service in PA is a right which is very cool, and that PA residents are very knowledgeable of their rights. I think the right of phone service, along with the new virus laws, are an example of what other states should be considering.
I agree... I think most NT types (er... and perhaps I'm guilty of this) are rather icon-numbed if that makes sense, and have more of a sense that there's a ghost in the machine instead of thinking they could have control of the problems...
Kevin Mitnick being forced off the speakers' circut? Is that defense? I dunno... perhaps I'm paralleling free speech / cracking a bit too much, but I dunno... how the hell do you do anything in a neighborhood where there's a billion rooms in each house, and everyone has to make their own keys?
I should write a book... "20 things to look for in your next basement-extract hunchback computer geek 13-year-old security expert..." Lesson #1: DDOS
