Sort of soap-opera-ish, but quite a story. I wanna live on the SDF-1

  5. Last night on Napster Hurts Album Sales? · · Score: 1

I go to sleep listening to Headline News (anyone else?) and when I heard the statistics, I started laughing out loud... the numbers mean *nothing*... its like saying "Accidents involving Dodge Spirits increased by 90% at dangerous intersections"... Now... is the car? Or is it grandpa up from Florida?

  6. Jon Katches my respect. on At The Crossroads · · Score: 1

  8. Priority Problems on Web-Based Helpdesks? · · Score: 1

I think atleast one level of priority should exist... like managment should be able to page you with the system to your Alpha numeric pager, etc... That should eliminate most concerns of using the web as being slower than real life...

  9. PocketMail & Related Devices on Looking For Wireless Handheld E-Mail And Web? · · Score: 1
PDAStreet.com in the section "gadgets" lists several PocketMail devices. Pocketmail is a $10/mo unlimited service, you dial a 1-800 number, and set the acoustic-coupled modem going and it sends and recieves email. I looked at the JVC HC-E100 (catchy name... er... )

The deal is, it's 9600 baud I think, email only... but with web-email gateways, you could do a lot... and the JVC device sells on ebay for around $50... definately a budgeted device anywhere in the states. International callers have to use a direct dial number, and will incur charges probably for that... anyway... neat devices to play.

If you have your own web services, you could probably write up a bunch of scripts to email you data you need when you trigger the page with an email. That's what I do.

  11. Beyond the web... on What AI Elements Could Improve the Web? · · Score: 1
I think of AI like I do my mind ;) Web pages are not my only source of information, and also Tech news and issues are not my only likes and dislikes... how about an information college engine, based on XML, that gets data from my Email, my IRC, /., and places like MoreOver to give me information that I want from the web sooner... and be able to book mark that... It should also be able to follow my trends like... "one week I'm reading slashdot a lot, but the next week I'm looking for music..." I think the AI should be tied into a discussion base... like /., but where people don't really write replies (free text), but rather answer short questions, and then links to other sites... I too can answer the questions, and whoever I match answers with, I can see their links, and I dunno...

Basically something that can be taught new data formats, and extract information for me and collect it... heheh ;) How's that for some vaugue things? Well... maybe hopefully it'll get ya thinking towards something cool!

  18. Aren't we all just another Arthur Dent? on Ask Douglas Adams About...Everything · · Score: 1

    Douglas,

I've been doing planning for travels in Europe, and I hope to squeeze in some time to explore the UK, and places mentioned in HG2TG as I've never been out of the States. I was inspired as an early teen (like many) by the concept of a lone human in space, as the HG2TG books stuck a chord with my then growing sense of life and maturity. It gave me a sense of independance that I felt through the character, and I hope to acheive that feeling to a greater extent with travel.

Question: Like HG Wells, your fiction is becoming reality through the guide that is the Internet. From WAP phones to webpads, what advice do you have for internet-enabled travellers? Is this technology, in your opinion, useful? Or are you sick of all and just think us nerds should rough it?

  19. CompUSA, Prodigy, and Earthlink on 50-Dollar Hackable "WebSurfer" · · Score: 2
I managed to get one of these 'cause I frequented the linux-hacker.net site and saw the discussions as they happened. Apparently the deal was, this device has been out since atleast December at $199.99... you could use it with their service for $23/mo or you could use your own ISP (at whatever cost) and the Websurfer company would charge you $14.95 for that ability (I guess you could use NetZero or something and only pay the $14.95 for the use of the device)...

The $49.99 deal was with Earthlink... Pay for 2 years upfront (sign up in the store at time of purchase), and they'll give you the device for 50 bucks. Unfortunately, as a CompUSA manager told me, they were under contract only to sell Prodigy service with their computers, and selling Earthlink would violate this agreement. (The manager said this was explained to him by an Earthlink representative.)

So... CompUSA was starting a big push, and advertised the device WITH OUT ANY FINE PRINT at $49 on their website, and listed as an "In Store Only" Item...

Some people got them, some didn't... Stores even in the same town had different policies decided for several days by each store manager (some of them didn't even know what the heck the thing was).

It is my understanding that since those days of inconsistency (Probably April 23rd-29th), the stores have since made some action to prevent this discounted sale.

It's a propreitary Cyrix device, and is fairly nice for the price, but you do have to add harddrives, or mess with the internal QNX software. TV Output is typical basic 640x480 scan conversion. There are other features on the motherboard that could add onboard IDE support, network support, audio in, etc... so it is a fun toy to see what all you can do with it.

Germany is like this... they also ban Scientology, and if I remember correctly AOL's company 'Compuserve' was in some similar shit in Germany before AOL bought them... AND they had to add the word "downloaden" to their vocabulary ;) I used to bowl, when I was an alcoholic.

  21. Underwhelmed on Where Are The WebPads? · · Score: 1

Well, PadSurfer.com was all about the hype, but now the interest has died... I think everyone gets this sense that it'll be the killer app, and I think the craze behind the Netpliance I-Opener is somewhat related... People want inexpensive quality hardware... and we don't want to have a desk-shrine to the devices.

  22. Maybe not a myth... on The Myth Of The Tech Slump · · Score: 4
