Hell, when they started irradiating food to kill bugs that could kill people, they found that they couldn't sell it. They had to coin a new marketing word (picowave!) so that the mouthbreathing morons that make up most of the public wouldn't think someone had slipped plutonium into their frozen peas.

The problem with irradiated beef, etc. is not glowing hamburger patties. Irradiation is good because it kills any microbes like salmonella in the food. But these microbes often come from sh!t getting in the meat. Currently the best way to cut the microbes is to keep the sh!t away, but if you irradiate it anyway then there's less incentive to keep the fecal matter on the floor. I personally prefer my burgers sh!t free instead of mixed with harmless, irradiated sh!t.

And I'm not a mouthbreathing moron.

  16. Re:Sounds like a headache on US Contemplating 'Vehicle Miles Traveled' Tax · · Score: 0

So, um, how are they going to split that between county, state, and federally-funded roads?

Answer: depends who levies the tax. Currently, the federal gas tax (18.4c/gal) goes directly to the federal highway trust fund, from which it is doled out to the states to pay for interstate highway maintenance. In addition, states and local gov'ts levy a variety of taxes on fuel which go into their coffers.

Likely, funds from a VMT tax would go to whomever levies the tax. I imagine that a state DMV would handle the work of tracking people's driving distances, then drivers would be taxed by various govt's based on that value.

By that, I mean there are still places they don't cheaply fill in for incadescents. Like dimming or being able to come to full brightness quickly (for closets, bathrooms, etc). At least, those're the problems I've had with the bulbs I put in about 4 years ago when I bought my house.

Try getting some new bulbs. Newer CFLs turn on almost as fast as incandescents. That's the problem with long bulb life-- it takes a while to turn over the older less effective bulbs!
