  1. Re:Why I don't use it on Freenet 0.5 Released · · Score: 3, Informative
The idea of Freenet is really great, but there were two things in the implementation that really annoyed me:

Yes but these aren't bugs they are a fundemental parts of the design.

    1) I cannot control what is in my datastore...

Then neither can anyone else, if a blacklist was implemented (keys a node should not cache) then Evil Organisation of your choice (RIAA,FBI,MI5), could publish a blacklist that you MUST use.

    2) My files aren't shared permanently..

Because its not just about storage but about routing. The requesting of files should cause data to "migrate" across the network allowing for specialisation. The caching and expiring of data is a fundemental part of this process. It is this that gives the scalability thats I feel is lacking in other P2P networks.

  2. Already happening in europe/africa/asia on Satellite Radio Coming Soon(?) · · Score: 2
Was actually playing with a digital satellite radio reciever last night.

Although not really being pushed in the UK, it is in the Afristar footprint. Slightly less advanced than the system in the article, fixed position recievers with an antenna that has to "see" the sky (thick walls means no signal). Sound quality is fairly impressive through the optical out, with stations using between 16-128kbps, easily equivalent to FM stereo on the music stations.

They are also pushing some data applications on the website, but no sign of the need accessories yet.

Cheaper than any of the terrestrial digital recivers around at the moment (Sanyo was only 100 UKP), might make a nice replacement for that Multiband radio, that you take away on holiday.

  3. Re:And why not? on Emusic Tracking MP3s On Napster · · Score: 2
I want to enjoy music I can download, and Napster stands in the way of this.

Actually I think you could argue the complete opposite. Napster forced the big 5 Record Labels to acknowledge the Internet as a potential market. I'm sure Napster's press citing 20 million users and previously unrecognised demand helped get the attention of record company directors.

Do you think that without Napster and MyMp3.com, you would be seeing the current rush by the big 5 to start their own distribution sites?

    Broadband a-go-go (100NLG/month == ~=30UKP for about 1.5Mbps....

I agree its getting cheaper (roll on FRIACO), but the last survery done said that the majority of the public aren't willing to pay more than 15 UKP (sorry can't find the reference online). So its going to take a long time for it to spread past the early adopters and speed freaks.

I dunno about you, but it would take me about 5 minutes to patch the modem connection in the right manner to be able to sniff packets off it. Mind you, I'm a tinkerer...

Much more difficult though, especially for a software boy like myself :-), patching into a phoneline is much more fun (V.90 anyone?), Remember no opening the case on your appliance because you invalidate the service agreement.

  5. Not going to happen yet on Where are the "Internet" Appliances with Ethernet Cards? · · Score: 3
It comes down to two main facts.

The majority of homes don't have networks and/or high bandwidth connections yet (especially in the UK & Europe). So the market is not big enough for ethernet appliances, compared to the modem only versions, "Only a normal phoneline required for use". And why put in both and increase your costs?

Secondly they don't trust users with the data ! It becomes so much easier to break open your packet sniffer and start reverse engineering whatever protocol they are using, or redirect the communication or whatever the user feels like doing when its on a network. A phone line is so much more controlled.

Give it a while for home networks to become more popular (and standardise) and ethernet connectors may start to appear.
