  1. No More Movie Reviews Please on Review: Atlantis · · Score: 2

I don' t really like to read the movie reviews in Slashdot ( hell I disagree with movie critics in general on principle because whether you like or dislike a movie in general is really a matter of pure taste ). I went to see Swordfish today; I saw but refused to read the Slashdot review and the comments about the movie. If you think this is movie about hacking or cracking or whatever you missed the boat. Swordfish with it's firefights and car chases is a formulaic movie albeit an extremely well done and was worth the price. And now today I am reading on Slashdot an Atlantis review and even though I do not like Disney animation and without a doubt prefer Japanimation especially Princess Monoke and Ghost in the Shell, I do intend to see Atlantis for the visuals look good. However it is my opinion that the slashdot reviewer is clueless. While reading the review I came across the fact that Cree Summer was the white chick in A Different World, and I said to myself hold on, there were two white chicks in that show? Even though I didn't see that many episodes of what I thought was a boring spin-off of a very good show I do know that Marisa Tomei was the white chick (well that's probably what the audience called her anyway too) so who was the other? After researching (if you can call looking for pics, using google, research ) I found the actress Cree Summer the reviewer referred to was a chick but definitely not white -- at most she was biracial and an apparently talented artist. Now if the reviewer can't bother to check simple facts please no review. I have an even better suggestion for Slashdot: No more movie reviews, no more articles about hybrid cars and homemade rockets and other IMO filler...I'd really like to see Slashdot articles to focus on computers and related issues, especially articles about Linux and free-software. If I want to read movie reviews and articles about hybrid cars and home-made rockets I'll read PREMIERE or Popular Mechanics. If I must read one more movie review here I pray that it's the Matrix 2 and that's it. Oh yea and no more Jon Katz; I mean theres over-intellectualizing and pseudo-intellectualizing. Jon's stuff is over-pseudo-intellectualizing -- which should not be confused with pseudo-over-intellectualizing.

  6. Why should software be patentable at all? on UK: Software And Business Methods Not Patentable · · Score: 1

Coke Pepsi KFC don t patent their recipes. Those are valuable intelleectual properties. However they are protected because though not covered by patents - they are considered trade secrets. Software should also be considered like the recipes for these products rather than being patented. What would happen if someone came up with an algorithm as fundamental Euclid's? Nearly every coder would be beholden to the patent-holder.

  8. Re:Slightly contradictory? on Harlan Ellison on Copyright Infringement · · Score: 1

NOT! Its only contradictory if u look at what he says without considering the reality of many artists. They do what the love in order to earn a living. While they could do it for free and have to, say, teach English or manage a Kinko's, the amount of work they could do would greatly suffer. Creating music or stories or most any other thing takes a lot of work. If artists were forced to work, it stands to reason that fewer people would be exposed. Why? Because it is a beyond a doubt that an artist's output over his or her lifetime would be reduced significantly.

Just my two cents: I've always though that a lot of classic(Tm) sci-fi novels should be made into japanimation -- The Foundation Series, Ringworld, Helliconia Series or Dune are my candidates!

  11. $52K in attorney's fees? on Student Web-Site Censors Stung for $62,000 · · Score: 1

This is mere conjecture but certain violations permit triple damages -- for example certain antitrust violations and civil rights actions. Further the amount lawyers get is not necessarily predetermined; in contingency fee cases attorney usually take a cut of the pot. But otherwise lawyers and clients are free to negotiate a fee for services rendered. If more than one lawyer is involved, which is more the rule than the exception, then the the fee can easily be several times larger.

Hmmm I m not certain if this is right but I think radio airplay and live music "covers" are covered by compulsory licenses. What's more american than those. Besides copyright laws grant a monopoly to the artist; what's more un-american than that. IANAL..at least till May I am not.

  13. What? on Is Linus Killing Linux? · · Score: 5

Is it me or did everyone just take drink a gallon of knee-jerk reactionary juice? Most people are reacting to one phrase "linus killing Linux". The article had some valid points to me. One, if Linux is to grow as it has done, shouldn t what Linus does with respect to the kernel, be a full time job? By dividing his responsibilities is he not giving short shrift to one or the other or both? To me the article is proposing that Linus devote himself to Linux full time or let another org do it. If Linux is to grow as its done the idea just makes sense.

  14. Not Bloated Really! on Linux Distributions Are Too Big · · Score: 1

I don t think it's Linux bloat at all; it 's just bundling applications. How many people would complain if Windows or MacOS cam bundled with a like number of apps? No the real problem he is addressing - who knows what all these apps do? What all the distros need is a document - HTML, PDF, whatever - that tells the user AT A GLANCE what each and every app does, in a paragraph or two. Then after that the user can check out /usr/doc if she wants.

  16. Supervisors on The "Glory" Of Tech Support · · Score: 1

Anyone who has ever worked a call center knows that callers asking for "supervisors" never really get supervisors. Callers actually get people who have been there a little longer and given slight raises who are trained to handle irate customers. This is an attempt to get customers to think they are getting customer service and knowledgeable people. Its rare that customers get a real supervisor, ie the people who evaluate the call center employees. However its only matter before people get wise to this practice.
