Presumably, the power you're wasting isn't an issue as the brownout situation has passed. Obviously, you add a certain interval to ensure the whole startup doesn't propagate another brownout.
As far as the wear on drives/fans, we're talking drastic measures for drastic times here. If you have a power outage, you'll have to deal with the same powerdown issues, potentially in a less prepared state!
If a server had powerdown capability, it would also last longer on a UPS. In the event of a brownout/black out situation, if the UPS told the server to go into power save mode, the system would recover quicker when power came back up, and could live longer on ups power than a fully 'up' server.
What he was saying (with the whole Longbow/rifle analogy) was that, while the technology may seem to be inadequate/kludgy now, it may not be in the future.
AFA all the 'it won't compete with a X Ghz processor' has it occured to anybody that you print the pages for the supportable stuff (battery/display) and all 100 pages have a notch dead center where a real processor is dropped JUUUST before you laminate on the keyboard?
I'll vouch for the Energy Encore system. Very good imaging and range for not a lot of $$$. Granted, the $1500 above would go to the speakers alone (no tuner/amp) But then you should learn that nothing sucks worse than having to buy TWO of something 'cause the first one wasn't what you wanted.

Bah! You just say that because you're growing oooold.
How will our kids live with free slaves?
How will our kids live with free love?
How will our kids live with free information?
They, and by historical example you, will get along just fine.
(The alternative means we don't get to see stuff like Trinity in Bullet time.;) )
Whelp under NT, the Task manager 'always on top' wins out over Juno's 'always on top' adrotator.
I'd much rather look at my system resources than 'HIT THE MONKEY!' any day.
Ahhh, so I wasn't the only one reading that article with Nvidia using the 'borg voice'
um, that was 462 SQUARE millimeters.
Now, 462 Trapezoidal millimeters, that'd be an accomplishment.

So then you HAVE your 1 Ghz, $40 laptop.
