  1. Not that excited on Kenwood Tries To Improve MP3 Sound · · Score: 1

When I read about this a couple of days ago it didn't sound like anything new. There are already a number of winamp dsp plugins, some of which claim to improve sound quality in this way. Perhaps Kenwood can do this sort of thing better than most, but information is lost with mp3, there is nothing you can do about that. My experience with this kind of thing is that the sound can be richer, but often sounds artificial, not more natural.

  2. Re:securing not enough - cracker tracking necessar on How To Secure A Cracked Box · · Score: 1

You gave the answer to your own question. Read the story.

You did not need to read very far to know his reasons. He said their network setup was very complicated. It was also very clear that the cracker had multiple ways into the system. Reinstalling the whole lot did not seem to be an option they could do. They did not even reinstall the one box they took down as they did not have the resources. Anything short of a complete reinstall and not all of the backdoors put in by the cracker may have plugged. The sysadmin was very worried that the cracker would trash the system to remove his tracks if he was discovered.

So he set about finding out as much as he could. That is why, whether they were right or not is for you to decide.

  3. D'oh! on Mandrake 7.1 Released · · Score: 1

As I speak my CD burner is 40% through writing Mandrake 7.0. Why do I have such impecably bad timing? Oh well, I suppose I have another beer mat now.

Couldn't these distributors give some prior warning? They could privately send out the distro to mirror sites first if they are worried about flooding at release.

  4. Games over telnet on Descent 3 for Linux Announced · · Score: 1

Can't help with descent, but here is an ASCII front end to quake. Now you can play over telnet. Enjoy.

  5. ZDNet article on The MP3 Troubles Continue · · Score: 1

Within the next four months, a student or "other individual found downloading illegal MP3 tracks" will go to jail "as a clear signal that piracy will not be tolerated in the US."

Does anybody have any statistics on how many people have gone to jail as a result of copyright offenses? I'd hazard a guess that it is not many. I imagine the law has basically only gone after those making a hefty profit from what they did. Why should how they are breaking copyright law make a difference?

...current legislation is primarily used "as a threat" rather than a punishment

I doubt many people are feeling particularly threatened. Certainly not all those Napster users who signed up again after being booted off. There is a feeling of safety in numbers...and what numbers! I'm sure the music industry has sense to know that there is a big problem and the way to solve it will not be shooting at the odd random little guy.

  6. Power Supply on Tiny PC: The Matchbox Web Server's Revenge · · Score: 4

    Power supply required

5 VDC regulated at 2.5-6 watts

Looks like the power supply may end up being bigger than the computer. Now I wonder whether you can get 5 VDC out of a dozen potatoes... :p

  7. Look at the hardware and possibly reconsider on Free Software Voice Over IP Solutions? · · Score: 1

The software mentioned are all possibilities. However, in my experience using computers to send audio across the net has lots of problems.

Unless your soundcard and software can do full duplex (mix incoming and outgoing sounds) the conversation can get very confusing. Unless you are used to saying "over" at the end of a sentence I suppose.

To those saying that you are cheap, I understand. I can ring USA for 3p/min from the UK, but Prague would be 19p/min.

By all means give it a go. However, you may find that you are better sticking to email and instant messaging between expensive calls.

  8. A Chiral compound is... on New Molecule With Switchable Chirality · · Score: 3

Simplistically a chiral compound is one which would appear different if viewed in a mirror. For example, your left hand cannot be imposed on top of your right hand as they are mirrors of each other. Your hands are chiral.

Biological molecules are (almost) always chiral and normally organisms can only cope with one version of a molecule and not its mirror.

Chiral molecules rotate plane polarised light. A molecule's mirror will rotate the light in the other direction. This is why they may have a use in "liquid crystal displays and non-linear optics".
