Initally year versions do seem to addess problems such as compatability.. Office 2000 for Windows 2000... but it's not a real solution... The problem is one version has problems the next update dose not and newer versions have features older versions do not.... if there is no way to tell how updates the os is then your fighting an uphill battle when it comes to tech support becouse 95 and 95 and 95 become 3 diffrent systems with 3 diffrent behavures and do 3 diffrent things. Also that in no way stops people from doing year version number inflation... I have in my office right now a Gateway 2000 4DX2-66.. a 486... My first guess is it won't run Win2k very well... It's accually in the "scrap" pile.. [I get to see if it still works and can still be used] it probably got there by failing a Y2K cert...
Companys and people who year version will just continue to do so.. car companys have making model year cars for a long time and thats fine for Ford and Microsoft but like Linux who updates allmost all the time might need an year, month, day, hour, min.second, nanosecond, fork version Also Microsoft dosn't have much of a way to tell alphas and betas from final products... other than stampping ALPHA or BETA it's pritty much still Win2K... But thats ok becouse you can tell a Micosoft beta from an offical version by just by the fact that you get the offical version from the store shelf or pacaged with your computer but to get a beta you have to be a beta tester and have Beta stamped on your CD and all the beta documentation is a pritty big clue too. But with Linux the beta and offical versions are side by side on the FTP server.. so x.even.x is stable and x.odd.x is unstable.
Yes each product has it's own versionning system and each presents a unqiue problem.. but thats life...
Linux 2k? Windos NT 5? MacOs ZenDax Ohh yeah word name versionning... like Pentium.. Xeon.. MsWindows Duvodec... Yes I'm playing games on Duvodec... no I'm playing games on Linix dronabinol...
> Now for true public wireless someone has to have that satellite
I admit I'm living in the middle of the of a city.. so I have access to brodband.. But prefer wireless...
Here they relay of short range relays... This works well and fine for us..
I understand why you need satlight access.. It's a very diffrent reality.. I'm close enough to a telephone pole to get a radio signal from it... I'm also close enough to get a wire... the wireless has some advantages and is cheaper...
There isn't a node on each pole.. Instead it's on one of every 100 poles.. Within a mile of each other (thats the range as I understand it)..
If a pole is nocked down (by a careless driver for example) as long as there is annother node to replace it the connection remains.. the phone lines are cut...
Not a great help for you.. The range isn't there..
However it is doable using HAM technology but it's dial up speeds (or slower) not quite what you want...
Wireless is also an easy way to bypass monopolys who currently control the land lines..
Phone companys controll phone lines, DSL, ISDN, and OCR-*
Cable companys control well.. cable..
While deregulation is being used to open up thies markets in the United States the rest of the world has issues of thies monopolys using position to CLOSE UP the ISP market...
The UK could use a wireless ISP to bypass BT for example...
> Why should wireless internet be free, when wired isn't?
There is no should or shouldn't about it...
Free ISPs are hamppered by that wire... it's an additional cost.. Many free ISPs exist.. banner ads and just hobby systems.. But as a rule they don't last long due the costs imposed by that wire.. or fiber optic.. or any phisical connetion.
Free ISPs will not be so limited with radio IP.. One antanna for all the connections.. and only a one time fee for the antanna.. Maybe a yearly FCC liccens.. But the cost to serve 5,000,000 people is the about the same as the cost to serve 5... Not counting additional equipment and maintainence on same.
"Should"? Well.. It can be... it dosn't have to be... people are perficly willing to pay for it and will continue to do so for as long as there is no free alternitive...
> I would rather the government spy on me than some company and with the rampant anarchy free and open wireless would bring that is exactly what would happen.
I would much rather have someone spy on me that I could sue if I cought them doing it...
Yes companys will find some excuse for it but as soon as someone dose someone will file a class action lawsute (There is an industry of filing lawsites for people.. today they need to get the persons permition before filing.. I'd join such a lawsute..)
You really can't sue the government... (You can but... they'd just pass a law making it legal and do it anyway)
There isn't much anarcy in busness.. Government regulation and capitalism both rule busness.
On the asside... public wireless internet would mean.. radio carrier.. Government, Corperations, Hobbyists, 31337 hax0r d00ds, centient ants, and Alien fungus on weather ballowns will all tap the signal...
This being true of some companys a real capitalist finds proffit in feeding the poor...
(Todays proffit modle for poverty is as advertising.. "We feed the poor" "We give computers to the poor" - Microsoft, "We protect the environment" - Exxon... Not only the most evil but all companys use this.. the most evil however don't have much of a choice).
VA Linux makes money selling computers with Linux preinstalled.. WC-CdRom sells CDs loaded with free software (anyones free software). I think RedHat missed the boat with focusing on selling a distro.. Caldera with certification, support and enbeded systems has a better grasp of how to proffit from a distro.
Many companys would see public bandwith and an advantage not a disadvantage and would loby FOR it if anyone lobbyed against it...
More than likely it'll happen under there noses... Companys who try to get stuff banned aren't paying attention to trends.. It's happening now but won't materealise for 10 to 50 years from now. During than time it'll cement itself. Politicians will come to depend on it long before corpratism catches note... Try lobbying to Senitor Please that free bandwith must go after he wins an ellection using it...
I'm writing a si fi set in the future and have considered how the Internet may run may years from now.
Nobody uses phones anymore it's all Internet..
The phone companys still exist but only to run fiber optic for back bones and ISPs.
Backbones run the primary network. ISPs provide service to "Commuity network" providers, servers (Websites etc) and "Geeks" who want/need cutting edge technology (optic lines etc)
For most speed isn't a major issue. With radio IPs going from 2 meg to as slow as 28.4k websites usually adjust according to the populare technology of the time. Moores law begins to apply to bandwith as the "standards" are set down by the local Community networks.
The community networks operators are basicly ham ops.. They do it for prestige. Political canidates, advocates, geeks, and research organisations run thies. Usually geeks but there is the odd exeption.
The community network provider uses what ever he wants but if you want to use something diffrent he'll be more than happy to take a donation of a feed modem for the technology you want to support. To help premote new modems some companys just give away feed modems and suck up the cost in the sales of the user modems.
The community network provider pays for his own ISP feed.
Each community has more than one community network provider so you can usually get an account from whom ever you like. Most community network providers however use the user banlist.. It dosn't matter if a community provider agrees with the other providers policys a person who blatently ignores policys is going to have a hard time getting a new feed.. In the same rule a community network provider isn't going to be taken very sereously if he isn't reasonable with policy enforcment. In short spammers get stuck paying for expensive ISP accounts just to spam.. and many ISPs honner the community network bandlists.
It isn't nessisary to get a direct feed to the community network.. It's normal for the community network to be distributed in a maze like fassion with everyone pulling feeds from nearby rather than the far away community network provider. However the provider still gets finnal say even when someone isn't directly connected but is far off on his downlink.
"DICKtator" Community network admin basicly just lose users to a more reasonable provider.
The community network feed is free to anyone (as a rule) Charging a fee sets you up for a fall when someone else provides same service for free.
Community network admin who charg a fee are dispised.. seen has half dictator and half spammer. (Spammer becomes anyone who abuses the network for proffit rather than todays UCE.. and dictator is someone who abuses position... so a Spam Dictator is someone who abuses position for proffit)
The community networks have problems. Using microwave technology the signal can be messed with. Most modems use high grade point to point mutation encryption but not allways. The biggest issues are the guys running the networks. Not everyone is in it for the technology and some agendas. Occasionally a community network provider will ban all porn sites.. Or will block a certen game or protocal.. It usually works out in the end that people just switch to someone else ASAP.
The fun part is the package point to point signal. Usually some idiot figures out there is a packet feed and puts something matalic in the way. So most people go with brodcast style modems.
Occasionall it'll happen someone will BAN an operating system or REQUIRE an operating system.. Users of operating systems not allowed on the network tend to protest the community network. It's a matter of pride to them at this point. They could switch but the whole idea that someone is trying to pull this is just bad enough..
In my view community networks are not a matter of if.. but when... I set my story far enough into the future that I feel it's safe to assume community networks are a well established fact.
Also in my story the workforce realitys has changed a bit. Most manual labor jobs are automated. High end repair, invention, and art are about the only manual labor jobs left and thies are really skill jobs.
Accually all jobs are skill jobs.. Not quite push button but it's a lot easyer. The ludites are people who refuse to have wearable computers.. however it's hard to spot this as busness managers, and anyone who worrys about apperence refuses to use wearable computers. That sensor over the eye is just "just horrid" (according to style and fassion experts)
Everyone makes good money...
The biggy issue of the day are "work-a-holics" not the real people but more the people who wish to work past the normal retirement age of 35. It's seen as horrid. People are expected to retire when they have acheaved a level of wealth that they can live comfortably to the old age of 104 years (few ever make it that far.. It's just the far extream just in case.. most people don't live past 92)
Anyway the whole idea here is that everyone has technical skill.. Everyone is on the network.. the people who worry about bandwith are the Servers, Community network providers (CNPs), ISPs, Backbones and the phone companys (who run the optic cable)...
Phone companys still bill using postal mail and still refuse to use electronic check..
Amazon.com, Etoys.com and many other "DotCom" websites are lampoon websites.. "Back in the DotCom days thies websites were the home of companys who never really did figure out how the Internet works.. they died in the late 1990s and early 2000s.. Today they exist as monuments to sillyness.."...
Sevral protocals are used.. gopher is alive and well.. the protocals of choice for e-commerce are Com-E (A pun) Short for Commerce Electronic and Telnet... The web is usualy just legacy stuff.. older data.. archives.. It would be an unjustifyed hassle to move to newer technologys.
The real limitation is the FCC.. They set the rules for what radio bandwiths can be used for the Internet.. They refuse to admit the death of the TV industry (they keep introducing TV standards in the microwave signal range).... In a bit of irony AM radio is alive and well...
Millitary signal for unknown reason is de-alocated by the FCC and has been freed up for community networks.. Conspericy therarists wonder.. Most people just think they have some new technology they are keeping secret.. It'd probably get found out sooner or later but.. It seems community network providers would rather it be later... They don't want the FCC to take the bandwith away...
I saw the topic. This was more important. Thats very bad logic... If it's importent you can submit it to Slashdot to be posted to the main page... if it's not importent enough to post correctly it's not importent enough to post at all...
I woke up am 5pm [yes night owl I am] to my radio proclamming to provide Y2K covrage.. Keep up on all the Y2K news... blah... Called into work... directed someone to turn on my computer and radio modem.. modem dosn't want to work.. ok no biggy.. directed the person to shut down.. By the time I got to work the modem was fine and the person was online checking up on her stocks. She says there was some news on one company in the early morning hours and she wanted to put in a buy order on-line... according to the information she could get nothing is happening in the stock market.. she might be able to get a good deal... When she was done and I got to set up for my day I switched over from her account to mine.. pulled up some Y2K music "It's all a conspericy man.. this is how the freemasons plan to take over the united states government..." kick on IRC... pull up some web sites and wait... Someone mentioned CNN and I rembered that I could watch CNN over real audio so I pulled it up over the RealPlayer G2 alpha for Linux [Looks like Realmedia dosn't plan to support Linux for very much longer... time to make our own format.. hint hint] I occasionally mentioned that my brain wasn't Y2K complient... other Y2K jokes went around... looking for the pissed off survivalists... they seem to be staying underground...
Ok first Y2K bug.. accually this one is an oldly.... My XT at home [The Back up] is trapped in the 1980s.. I knew this allready.. but it works fine... so who cares... Next Y2K bug.. apparently someone on IRCs lighters arn't Y2K complient... they all died... oh well... Next a website PVP isn't pointed at the right location for the Y2K commic... still pointing at 1999 subdirection.. apparently the year is hardcoded and has to be changed manually every year... Next bug... My security camra works fine except for the fact that there is no 13/1/99 [13th month].. I have to fix this every year.. no biggy.. did it before... Unfortunatly it uses a 2 digit year but then that clock is a convence we can live without... Next annother website Giga-byte now for the fun part.. Mac and Linux report year 2100 but a test version of Windows gets 4000.. It's the website and I don't know why it malfunctions diffrently for Windows but I suspect being a test version is part of that... The website reports the wrong year eather way...
In short the "Y2Kbugs" are related to disposable lighters.. website defects.. new year bugs and old 198X bugs. Power dosn't go off... my brains didn't explode all over my desk.. and where are those pissed off survivalists... I need to laff in there faces... dang it they must be in hinding...
Boy this is getting to be a regulare feature here:) hehe hay well yeah anyone can post there prospectives like this and thats cool:)
Ok now... It seems Etoys is trying to get Etoy to enforce the allready dead CDA on themselfs.
Initally they'll be asked just to clean up there front page but eventually they'll have to clean up the whole site... Also the language is eather forgetfull or compeatly ignorent of the fact that etoy is not a corpration.. What Etoys is asking might be considered ok for a fellow corperation seeking a quick solution to a lawsute but Etoy is an artist group and this "request" would be akin to asking a busness to stop making money... I'm shure most of us knows that free expression is the life blood of art and proffit is the life blood of busness. Each can survive with out it for only so long... thow some internet companys seem to have survived for a very long time in the state of unproffitability....
if etoy did take this preposale the folowing would happen.. some would drop out of etoy.. the remainning artists would continue to work in a more commertalised and stiffled mannor.. the audence would walk away seeing the life blood of etoy is gone.. Etoy would slowly wither and die from there.. leaving etoys free to take over the domain and be rid of etoy forever...
I don't know if etoys is just yanking our chain or if etoys is sereous about getting this behind them. But what they want is basicly nothing short of a CDA style agreement from etoy and as I said thats like asking etoys to give up proffitability forever..
Yes artists stiffle themselfs.. they restrict themselfs becouse they feel it's good for the art they are doing... if an artist feels his work is for kids then he restricts himself acordingly.. if he feels his message is for a certen group he restricts himself acordingly... if he believes he should act as the spawn of satan he should have all the artistic resorces at his disposal to do so.. What etoys and other companys have to wake up to is the fact that they can only control there corprate image from within there own company.. outside the walls of there busness is the rest of the world and we'll pritty much act as we see fit.. if someone from etoy wallked into etoys HQ and started stripping nakid then etoys would have something to worry about... but then again so would etoy sence thats not exactly a sain thing to do.
So now people in the UK can't buy stuff on Etoys putting them in a position to want to settle faster so they don't lose more costummers in the face of the existing loss? That they may wish to prepair for more lost costummers due to credit card based Y2K bugs?
this smart mac user you are describing seems to be Laura Croft? Hehe.. a 3D first person shooter carricter is a Mac user? I kinda presummed she was a Play station coder...
Accually no.. It's sort of a composit of two Mac geeketts I know.. A Web Deva and a Unix deva The Web Deva edits web pages on the Mac (Note pad and kick butt graphics editing)... The Unix deva turns old Macs into Unix servers.. she needs only one Mac but has no end of need for Unix servers and finds herself allways upgrading her Mac.
Also theres the plus side of not having your account closed for being the source of a DoS attack... violating your ISPs ToS.. And all that explainning to non-tech legal experts how you arn't responsable and that it's just a defect in your computer...
Many people should care if their Mac (or other computer) is able to do a DOS, especially when the feds knocks on their door because they are flooding a govt site.
Picturing it.... Haapless user is downloading a Quicktime... suddenly the download slows.. user thinks "oh the net is slowing down again" figuring the bandwith between her mac and the website is narrowing... A rather smart presumption for any user to make and Mac users (to spite myths) generally are smart... But this isn't what is happening... Instead some script kiddy is sending costum UDP requests to the victoms Mac to have the Mac send larg packets to old_pathetic_system.bigbrother.gov. User chouses to make the most of it.. after all the user is FTPing the Quicktime for local playback.. Shure she could stream it directly using her Cable modem but she chouses to have it stored on her hard disk so he can view it at her lesure... So now that everything is SO SLOW she picks up her stuff and heads over to Pizza hut and orders a nice x-larg pizza. Everything should be done by then. She comes home [having stuffed herself with pizza] to find 3 government agentcys climbing over her appartment... But the good news is.. sence she wasn't home and the script kiddy was going to keep it up for as long as the Mac was on-line they hunted down and cought the real attacker. However that hasn't prevented anyone from smashing open the door to her appartment and screwing up her download... Before she downloads the quicktime again however.. she makes a quick trip to Apples website to download the patch.. becouse she is after all.. a rather smart person... She just isn't a computer expert... In the mean time she sues 3 government agentcys for damages to her place... sues the script kiddy for involving her in his pathetic sceams.. and watches her quicktime while munching pizza. Oh yeah and she clues in a government waist advocacy group about old_pathetic_system.bigbrother.gov and they have it taken down only to be replace by new_pathetic_system.bigbrother.gov...
Yes you missed something... This dosn't stop the user [guy behind the keyboard] from doing a DoS... it dosn't even slow him down... What this dose is prevents a third party [not the guy behind the keyboard] from using the Mac for a DoS.
So this DOSE close a security hole in the system.. it dosn't let them do anything sereous to the victom computer but it dose allow a script kidding to use a victoms Mac to mount an attack on an unsuspecting target
Now, for some reason, this inspires ZERO confidence in me (not sure if there's such a thing as a negative level of confidence, so I won't go that far).

Companys and people who year version will just continue to do so.. car companys have making model year cars for a long time and thats fine for Ford and Microsoft but like Linux who updates allmost all the time might need an year, month, day, hour, min.second, nanosecond, fork version
Also Microsoft dosn't have much of a way to tell alphas and betas from final products... other than stampping ALPHA or BETA it's pritty much still Win2K...
>If Tesla's free wireless power wasn't used, neither will this.
Tesla couldn't get a backer for his proffitless venture..
Linus never bothered with backing and just wrote code..
If we wait for someone to back a free wireless it'll never happen... if we do it ourselfs out of our pockets it'll be posted on Slashdot hmm 3 times?
Will it be done? No.. That implys a start at a future date.. It's allready happening.. The start is in the past...
> The telephone companies have determined grassroots bandwidth is not a constitutionally protected right.
They don't have much say in the matter...
> So, expect public bandwidth to be banned.
Someone mentioned CNN and I rembered that I could watch CNN over real audio so I pulled it up over the RealPlayer G2 alpha for Linux [Looks like Realmedia dosn't plan to support Linux for very much longer... time to make our own format.. hint hint]
I occasionally mentioned that my brain wasn't Y2K complient... other Y2K jokes went around... looking for the pissed off survivalists... they seem to be staying underground...
Boy this is getting to be a regulare feature here :) hehe hay well yeah anyone can post there prospectives like this and thats cool :)
Or... did you forget the topic...
Killed the english language?
I keep shooting it but the dang thing dosn't seem to want to die...
this smart mac user you are describing seems to be Laura Croft?
Hehe.. a 3D first person shooter carricter is a Mac user? I kinda presummed she was a Play station coder...
Accually no.. It's sort of a composit of two Mac geeketts I know..
A Web Deva and a Unix deva
The Web Deva edits web pages on the Mac (Note pad and kick butt graphics editing)...
