  1. Holdings on FCC Approves AOL-Time Warner Merger · · Score: 1

If you want a list of holdings, Columbia Journalism Review has them for both AOL and Time Warner. Wow. While AOL's list isn't so long, Time Warner's is very disturbing.

  2. RedHat - Debian on Converting Existing Systems From One Distro To Another? · · Score: 2
I once converted a running RedHat machine to Debian while logged in remotely (through ssh) and I didn't even have to reboot! What I did was to compile ssh from source so that I could log in through that (you don't want the packaged version because you are going to delete that), then I logged in and removed all the packages rpm would let me, leaving just the running base system. Next, I installed dpkg, found which files those RedHat packages contained and found the equivalant debian packages (look under the debian packages link on the debian.org page. Recently I have been thinking you might be able to just untar the base system from the baseX_X.tgz file and use that, but I haven't tried it) After I installed the appropriate debian packages I deleted the left over cruft from redhat and used dselect and apt-get to get the rest of the software I wanted, and changed all the startup stuff, and ran lilo. The next time the machine was rebooted (my buddy uses windows occasionally) it booted up just like any other debian machine, and it worked fine until then too.

    It's not really that hard.

  3. DHP.COM on Desperately Seeking Secure and Reliable Email? · · Score: 4

I have used The Datahaven Project (dhp.com) for several years now, and they have been really good. They have absolutely no information about me other than my e-mail address (with them). I pay by money order, and I just had them put a notice up on their page when my account was created, with the password I gave them on the cgi form. The price for a shell account is $50/ 6 months and I haven't regreted it at all. They run Linux and provide ssh access as well as POP, news, and all the standard stuff. They seem competent technically, and they are dedicated to privacy.

    Hope that helps.

Did anyone notice how short this article was? For a "part three" especially. Is this some sort of record?

  5. I already voted. on Should You Vote? · · Score: 1

Through the magic of Absentee ballots I have already voted. The reason I voted was that I really felt that the two canditates whom people look to as being the only two REAL options are both appalling to me, and I voted for a the candiate(from a third party) whom I feel most represents my views. Many people have told me I "wasted" my vote, but if enough people "wasted" their votes perhaps the system would change to allow a vote for a decent candidate not to be seen as a "waste". This person is supposed to represent me and I can't say that I want either Gush or Bore to represent me.

  6. Software with Sexual Orientation? on IRC Improvements · · Score: 1
I was looking at the FAQ for suidnet, and found this:

Q: why does xchat not connect and/or give me cert errors?
A: because xchat's ssl support is gay.

This is an interesting concept. Can someone please tell me what I have to do to make my programs gay? I think the software world needs more diversity. Almost all the programs I have seen have actively denied being "gay" and I think we need more programs "out of the closet". Does anyone know how to program sexual orientation in C or C++? Do I have to use the select() function?

Or at least put up some mirrors.

  8. Street Performers Protocol and Digital Copyrights on Against Intellectual Property · · Score: 1
Here is a link to an article written by John Kelsey and Bruce Schneier of Counterpane Systems, which talks about how to make money (Using their Street Performers Protocol) when your work can be copied infinitely many times.

One of the ideas is that you say "I will release this book when fans have donated X dollars", with the book having already been written and given to a trusted party. That way once the monetary goal is reached the book is released, and the author doesn't need to worry about people copying it because he has already gotten the money he wanted. He will in fact want to have people copy it, so that his work would become more popular and that there would be more demand for his next work.

Did you notice what that counts?

    From their Methodology Page:

At the current time, the estimated population being reported includes U.S. households that are viewing the Internet using PCs with Windows 95/98/NT as their operating system.

So I think if they included real operating systems we would see much different figures. :)

  10. DeCSS on A For-Profit Trip To The Moon · · Score: 2

Since they are accepting text ($50/page) to be sent to the moon, how about the source to DeCSS? I just think it would be a good way to make sure that when the earth is destroyed, we can still watch our DVD's. Has anyone already sent in the source?
