Its probably a combo of Intel flexing some muscles (come on its intel), and lack of confidence in the Crusoe. Has there been any *real* benchmarks for the Crusoe that show it has a substantial power usage edge? The only benchmark I recall was the one that powered a 9" screen or so. This hardly is a valid indicator of performance, since displays suck up a good percentage of power.. don't they?
Compaq also knows that Intel has an established track record.. whereas transmeta is still making its own. The IBM decision certainly doesn't help.
In light of all this, i think the Transmeta IPO will be one of the more interesiting ones to follow. Its coming on the other side of a hill for.com IPO's (although transmeta isn't really a.com IPO), and it should show investors confidence in the tech market after all the.com fallout.
I don't think that price (PS2) is the biggest issue here. And when people do see the price, they justify it with the fact that it is a DVD player. I'm betting alot of households that don't have a DVD player will want a PS2 to please the kids, and also have the bonus of being able to play DVDs. I would also hesitate to call the PS2 a glorified DVD player.. it is a video game console that happens to be able to play dvds:)
As for the indrema, it looks pretty good (the integrated mp3 player is a nice plus), but i'm not sure how having many developers necessarily means good games. Maybe it will be like the C64. I remember playing both nintendo and c64, and i loved them both for their own reasons (nintendo had very fun good looking games, c64 had some very addicting games + many many other games to choose from). Each had their own forte and was popular in its own way.
For the PS2, Indrema and X-Box, I believe most people will not follow the line of reasoning that they already have a computer and a DVD player. These 3 will integrate everything, into something that would work in a living room. Not many people I know of have their computer and DVD player and video game machine in the living room (or maybe they do...:), although it is starting to change....
I noticed that the user.pl script was having some troubles too. I couldn't login. I couldn't get my password mailed (it said my nick didn't exist). Then I tried to re-create it (for the hell of it), and it said it was created, but then said it wasn't found so no password was sent... fun fun fun:)
But he was skeptical that a 16-megapixel CMOS chip would produce the same high-quality pictures as his company's forthcoming chip. "You are going to get better image quality out of a CCD than from CMOS," he said.
The X10 cameras exhibit this problem. They are very cheap, but they produce sub-par picture quality because they are CMOS based. So it seems that even though they may have the pixel count up, they would still need to work on the other problem with CMOS, the quality. If they don't I'm sure that the CCD models will still sell well, and that there will be a bunch of people buying these cameras getting annoyed at sales people: "You said it is XX megapixel like that one, but the pictures it takes are crap!"
