The problem is that the amount of time it takes to process green cards takes longer than the time allowed on H-1B visas and if your case is not decided before that time is up, you have to leave the US, which really really sucks.
What needs to happen is that there should be a rule allowing people, who have already been sponsored for a green card through their employer before their six years are over, to stay until a final decision is made on their case. This is what's fair. If you are sponsored for a green card, and then you build your hopes and dreams around staying in the US, and then at the end of your six years, you are faced with leaving it all behind, it can be very depressing.
