  1. Biomarkers on Norway Brings DNA Sequencing To National Healthcare · · Score: 4, Informative

I write science part-time for the University of Colorado Cancer Center -- biomarkers are totally the way of the future. In lung cancer, we discovered that a ALK-EML4 gene rearrangement predicts great response to the drug crizotinib; we know about PSA in prostate cancer; we test for hormone dependence in breast cancer. Hopefully the Norway sequencing will add to this list of biomarkers that allow us to find cancer early and give doctors clues to its treatment. (Now, the next-gen is *protein* sequencing.)

  2. Mayans were right... on Computer Program Reconstructs Heard Words From Brain Scans · · Score: 1

Not only can a brain-computer interface decode thought words...it can Tweet them! The Maya were right. This, truly, is the end of the world. http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/04/braintweet/

  3. Garth Sundem on If You Don't Want Your Car Stolen, Make It Pink · · Score: 1

It'd be cool to correlate stolen car color with gender. I guess the vast majority of car thieves are male--would they prefer another outlandish color that's a bit more....manly?

  4. Garth Sundem on Plastic Bottle Catamaran Crosses The Pacific Ocean · · Score: 1

Wow, did you see the picture of that thing (http://www.upi.com/story/image/fs/12801765546116)? Plastic bottles maybe, but looks like just for flotation--the mast and sails look built from stronger stuff, eh? I like the "oh sh*t" igloo for the cockpit. Bet that thing's watertight. Still, trust fund or no trust fund, it takes guts and probably a whole lotta patience to ride that sucka across the Pacific. Wonder what the support was like?
