I'm not going to say I dont use napster. I'm not going to say that I've never download an entire cd solely so I could burn it and play it in my car. But I'm also not going to criticize the RIAA for trying to enforce their copyrights.
I have a hard time believing that any slashdot reader would do any differently if they were in the places of the lawyers for the RIAA. If they do not attempt to combate such bold cases of copyright infringement, then they lose all ability to prosecute copyright infringement in the future. As far as the RIAA is concerned, they must sue napster, if for no other reason than to set a precedent for copyright violations for their artists. If they, the RIAA, choose not to attack this case of copyright infringement, will they be able to mount a strong case against, hypotheically speaking, another artist who samples bass beats or guitar sections of a song? So, in answer to your question: Is it wrong for me to search for and download songs from artists that produced CD's/Tapes that are no longer available to purchase I present you with an equally valid argument: Is it wrong for a lawyer to set a valid precedent for his clients, regardless of how futile the precedent seems to an outside observer?

Usually i dont get into the whole Kharma whoring arguement, but you, sir, are a fucking moron.
I live in california. I live in a state where elections involve literally millions of people, of which 18-24 year olds make up less than 5% of the voting population. I dont know if you read political news, but the politicians in california care about three basic things: 1) rich white vote, that's where their money comes from; 2) minority vote, trying to win over the so far un-swayed mexican voters (who cares if they just crossed the border, they still get to vote because we're too stupid to regulate it); and 3) local voters. Since non of the senatorial candidates are from my area, that throws out option three. I'm white, but far from rich (i owe my college quite a bit), so there goes options one and two... so, how, sir, am i supposed to get the politicians to give a flying fuck about my vote? hmmmmmmm? Your demographics are exactly why my votes dont matter... now all this being said, i do still plan on voting, and who supports napster has nothing to do with my candidates of choice.

I think the problem is you generalize all universities together. Some of us do attend universities where QM is taught to first year undergrads, in the same class as classical mechanics, specifically to avoid the problems that this entire thread seems to be experiencing.
Furthermore, my college adds a few classes involving relativity to further understanding of abstract ideas and prevent us from making moronic (although probably troll-induced) comments such as (i'm paraphrasing) light is a wave and has no momentum. So I think the really big problem here isn't backwards teaching, its over generalizations, not only with these posts, but with the science behind the posts.

The laser would be earth bound, and nothing more than a a large peace of equipment. A laser pointing towards the sky shouldn't scare anyone.
I openly admit that I am not a physics major and I haven't spent very much time with anything related to aerospace, but if you mount the laser on earth, wouldn't you then be required to have multiple lasers to account for the rotation of the earth? This would also cause problems as the laser responsible for primary propulsion was switched, as the velocity would change, and therefore result in a constantly changing velocity/trajectory, dramatically increasing the difficulty of a simple mission. It seems that the earlier comment of a space based laser would be more appropriate, but even that must orbit something... so wouldn't it still face similar (although possibly substantially less) problems?
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Not that I believe online movies will stop people from going to theatres, but with all due respect, very few movies are released straight to VHS or straight to cable... True, there are some that go straight to Blockbuster, but they aren't worth paying for. Similarily, made for TV movies typically aren't worth watching (in my opinion anyway...I dont ever remember being overly impressed by any made for tv movies). If however they do start releasing decent movies online, this could be what you term more of a revolution: good movies available immediately....Although I guess this all depends on whether or not they actually release any good movies online.
================================================ = If ignorance is bliss, wipe the smile off my face
The appeal of traditional movies isn't always just sitting and watching. For a vast majority of viewers, its a social activity. Watching commedies with a group of friends in a crowded theatre can not be recreated online. Watching horror/suspense movies in dark theatres can be slightly recreated by a home viewer by turning off the lights, closing the windows, etc., but try telling your girlfriend its the same thing and I think you'll find she either laughs at you or breaks up with you.
Going to movie theatres isn't always about watching movies... its an experience that involved environmental factors as well. Until you can pack your house/dorm room/etc with 100 of your closest friends who make rude comments and laugh at unappropriate times, you can not recreate the movie going experience by downloading them online. Besides...some of us still use modems, and it would take me years to download it anyway...I'd rather spend the $8.
