Boy, using a 200-disc changer to read all the CD's would be great, but the issue of setting each file name and ID3 data would remain. I, for one, am really picky about file names and ID3 data, so having "track0.mp3" to "track13.mp3" for each album wouldn't cut it.

Ripping CD's off of your computer works so well because of the CDDB providing us with all the song and album informaition.

No, your argument that copying to prevent loss of quality and other damage (such as losing the damn thing) is gone is complete bullshit. Please try again.

But you'll notice that the topic of discussion is online music trading, not copying CD's. With tapes, the "try before you buy" argument is pretty valid, as each successive recipient will get a crappier copy (heck, the original was probably pretty bad, too ;-) ).

Making copies of a song from computer to computer incurs virtually no loss of quality, so the recipient has no real incentive to buy the artist's work.

    Why don't you try again?

The reason dubbing tapes is is legal is the loss of quality the sound suffers after repeated copyings. That was the deciding factor in the court battles back in the 80's. With that loss of quality gone, the main argument to the defense of copying music is out the window.

Then again, Ben Franklin didn't need the money from his new stove; he was probably already a pretty wealthy man. Check out this timeline to see where his stove invention fits in. He already had Poor Richy's Almanac and the Pennsylvania Gazette going for him; by this point he was probably more interested in benevolent pursuits (such as his electricity experiments a few years later), not profit.

Had he been some poor schmoe working in a forge and invented this new stove, I don't think the Open Source community would have this bit of evidence to back up their utopian beliefs.
