Try visiting any cell phone store (Verizon, Cingular, etc.) near a hospital. Most MDs are still required to carry standard pagers. As a result these stores are VERY likely to carry high quality pagers and plans for them.

  7. Illegal search and seizure on Has the RIAA Wormed 95% of P2P Networks? · · Score: 1

Doesn't this fall under some kind of Illegal search and seizure act? Gov't agencies can't just stroll on into your house, take a list of what items you "shouldn't" have, leave, then come back later and prosecute you, that's against the law. There has to be some kind of resonable cause for them to enter your home. Isn't it the same with your computer system? Even if the material is pirated to leagally prosacute you they still have to have reasonable cause in order to obtain a warrent to retreive it. So even if this worm (invading your system illegally I might add) is in fact actually sending lists back to the RIAA, legally it doesn't seem like there is a damn thing they would be able to do about it. Furthermore there's a good chance that even if they did try to pull some legal mumbo-jumbo not only are they shooting themselves in the foot with illegal search and seizure, unauthorized breaking and entering of a private computer system, and illegal and unauthorized use of private bandwidth most of which can be used for coutersuits or class action/federal cases. One last thing to mention is the plethora of people that 'fake' thier mp3s with text files for trading purposes. I came from a rather large tech univeristy and when P2P was just getting popular a number of guys had like thousands of mp3s on thier machines that were nothing more than random text files that they used for 'trading'. This goes hand in hand with the argument about how does the RIAA know it's pirated and not a legal copy. There is know way for them to know.

  9. Wrong Choice!! Can anyone say Monopoly?!? on Stem Cell Research Moves Forward In The US · · Score: 1

What our dear president did last night at 9EST was the worst possible thing that could have happened short of outlawing stem cell research all together. You see what are dear president neglected to mention that of these so called 60 avaliable stem cell lines, only about 14-18 are avaliable in the public sector (i.e. schools, universities, etc.) to researchers that would be able to use the federal funding. All of the other lines are held by private biotech firms which are not required to release them if they don't want to. So in essence all the president did was to monopolize the stem cell industry. Without the ablility for public sector research facilities to make their own lines, all they are able to do is work with the current avaliable ones and furthermore will be forced to pay EXTREME amounts of money for others if they want them. I work in the medical research field and this is absolutly the worst thing that could have happened. As it stands private firms often have the advantage in the research field anyhow, usually having superior facilities, equimpment, and a practically unlimited amount of money. This move by our president has done nothing other than force the public research in this area into completely the wrong direction. Any real advancement in this area will now happen behind closed doors where the public doesn't see what's going on, everything is hush hush, and any real medical advances will end up costing a fortune if found when the big biotech companies offer them on the market. That is assuming that they do offer them on the market, which again they have no obligatoin to do. What the president should have done was eliminate the creation of stem cells from in-vitro fertilization. That's really what this whole argument rested upon to begin with. People are up in arms that "killing" embryos in order to get stem cells is wrong. And although I don't agree with that statment I do see where those people are comming from. However there are other ways to get stem cells. Plecentas, and umbilical cord blood (sorry about the spelling) which are normally discarded after birth are full of stem cells, and techniques are even avaliable that allow adult cells to be transformed into stem cells. However these techniques are no longer avaliable. What our president has done is to put a major slow down on the effictive rate at which we can use stem cells to cure diseases. Myself and nearly all of my collegues (all 750 of us who were at the meeting today) believe that this was the wrong descision and that it should be overturned.

  10. Microsoft + Multiple Machines = Pain in the A$$!!! on Your Daily Dose of Microsoft · · Score: 2

I run 3 machines here at home all of which are currently using Win98/2000. They are family machines and it's just easier than having to teach little bro and mom how to use linux. Sounds to me like these machines are going to be staying with Win98/2000 for a while if this XP registration BS keeps up! There's no way that I'm going to shell out $300 for 3 copies of XP just because some moron at Micro$soft has a pinecone stuck up his ass *cough* Gates! *cough*... This is REALLY out of hand. You'd think that they'd at least allow a small liscence of up to 5 computers or something. What's even worse is that once I'm at college with all the hardware swapping/testing and misc. other stuff that goes on I'm regularly formatting my Win98 partition and reinstalling. So of course there is nothing more that I'd like to be doing than having my weekly phonecall to the dumbass M$ tech support people trying to explain to them how I formatted my drive 'again' and need a registratoin code because their software is a piece of crap. I had second thoughts about XP when I found out that they were dropping support for 3dfx cards, of which I have 2 (not M$'s fault I know... Blame nVidia for that one!). But with this news I really doubt that an upgrade to XP is going to happen anytime soon! looks like 98 and 2000 are going to have to hold their own for a while.... They might be able to stop some of us but there is no way that they are going to be able to stop ALL of us. This is way to big at this point. And it's not like it's really that big a deal, I mean what are they going to do to 30,000 (or 300,000 or even 3,000,000!) people?!? toss them in jail? If ANYTHING happens, which is doubtful, some people will get a slap on the wrist and possibly a fine. Metallica, Dr. Dre and the entire music industry need to get with the program and relize that no matter what they do MP3's are always going to be there. DEAL!!!
