Try to get students to use what they're learning in math/physics/etc classes. Also introduce stuff that they might not know but can readily learn and experiment with using their programming expertise. I recommend Neural Nets, Cellular Automata, Genetic Algorithms, Cryptography, Compression, etc. Basically the stuff you might find in an overview of Cybernetics. Sound, sight and insight are all excellently rewarding results. (Graphics, music, etc.) Example: a project using a genetic algorithm for optimizing a collage theorem based image compression algorithm. For exposure to large projects, don't start from scratch, but grab something with free source and modify it.
I think it's time for Gowachin Law. Litigation is too unchecked-- the purpose of law has become nothing more than launch pad for an all out assault on our society. (at least the kind I'd like to live in) I think new law should have to face trial to exist and in trials the prosecution should face consequences stiffer than just not winning.
Actually, only the efficiency (and current direction) of the tether is affected by being above or below geosync altitude. Drawing power from it will always lower the orbit and pumping power into it will always up the orbit.

Don't put computers in the classrooms, but do put computer classrooms in the schools. I agree that making the machine too ubiquitious where it is not the focus can harm our larvae. I got further than my friends with computers because I had the time ample time off in which to code and yet had sufficient access in which to try out what I'd studied and discovered. Math don't need no buttons!

I have a problem with any breakup that groups IE with MS apps. Straight text is a dinosaur document format suitable for log files and such but not much more. Any OS in the future should provide the means for a program to easily incorporate HTML/etc. (any format written to a open standard should be OS provided) display. I think the breakup is formatted along lines that pander to one particular party-- Netscape. Sure MS deserves sanction and I agree with breaking out the app division from OS, but I think IE deservedly belongs with the OS.
