  7. Agreed - Treo Rocks, or at least Wiggles on Why Have PDAs Failed In The iPod Era? · · Score: 1

I finally broke down and bought a treo - I was waiting for the perfect phone/pda combo to come out (or at least one that doesn't suck) and got sick of waiting. If the Palm LifeDrive had a phone that might be slightly better for my purposes, but the Treo will do for the time being. The keyboard is not ideal, and I miss Grafitti, but it's more than usable. The form factor is not ideal - it's heavy and bulky and awkward to make calls with. But it works. I like PalmOS better than any other PDA OS I've used; it does email passably and web browsing from just about anywhere (and SprintPCS offers unlimited internet usage for $10/month). I also use pssh and PalmVNC pretty regularly on this device; it's nice to be able to ssh in from anywhere as well as to use VNC when necessary to remotely control another computer. DocumentsToGo is nice too since you can look at documents you've created with Word or Excel (but don't expect too much control over the docs; Word for example won't let you see or edit footnotes for example). I got a 512M card which is more than enough for my purposes - it's nice to be able to listen to mp3s on this once in a while but you're crazy if you want this to replace your music player. People laugh about the camera, but it's useful for documenting things when you don't have a real camera around, and associating phone numbers with photos is a great feature if you exchange phone numbers with lots of people (particularly people you meet, umm, drunk)... The biggest problem is finding a reasonable way to carry this thing; it's too bulky for a pocket and I'm not doing the gunslinger look.

  16. licensing on Wikipedia Founder Sees Serious Quality Problems · · Score: 1

Thing about wikipedia is the licensing virtually guarantees that when someone wants encyclopedia-like content for a hardcopy book or website, the wikipedia will be there. While the wikipedia itself may not become the basic repository of human knowledge, many of its articles will be reproduced in various forms and built upon by people creating specialized encyclopedias or other sources of information. Journalists will pull quotes from wikipedia articles when writing stories, and though the quotes may be accurate and factual, they will represent idiosyncratic choices on the part of wikipedia editors. That is neither good nor bad inherently, but it does present the wikipedia as a significantly influential phenomenon, quite apart from its reliability.

Except that "compromise" is not always the best way to produce a truthful article. If one person is correct and the other incorrect, what benefit is there to "compromise" other than getting the two to stop bickering? Often the compromises produce pages that are at best schizophrenic ("Some say X while others say Z") and at worst, factually incorrect, just to please some bozo who insists on something that is demonstrably incorrect. The schizo articles are not necessarily unreasonable but often misleading because they present a "balance" of viewpoints even if the only people saying Z are complete fanatics or otherwise discredited sources.

I mean, it's so easy. All you have to do is go to your linux box, preferably with a custom Knoppix installation optimized for mythTV, but a red hat installation will do, just make sure you rebuild the kernel issuing all the right mantras.... then set up your partitions (be sure to choose the right filesystem), download and configure the appropriate mythTV packages that you wish to install (check your hardware of course and be sure you have the right video drivers and take a look at the docs for your sound card). Obviously check dependencies on all the components and also you might want to edit the usual files for something like this such as /etc/modprobe.conf. Make sure you get all the MythTV components, there should be 94 packages if you're installing on redhat, and check the dependencies for each one. You'll probably want an IR receiver so you can use remote too; find, download, configure, and install those packages too; you might want to fiddle with /etc/udev/rules.d/lirc.rules. Of course you'll have to set up MySQL to run at startup and issue the usual commands, things like mysql -u root -p < /usr/share/doc/mythtv-0.18.1/database/mc.sql to get things running; the rest will be handled after you set up mythTV. Then populate the database (check dependencies first!) and if all goes well, all you need to do is edit your crontab to take care of mythfilldatabase every night and then you can configure automatic startup. Configure whatever MythTV addons you want and you're done! It's that simple! Problems? Read the documentation! Then just think of all the many things you can buy with the $2 that you just saved with these simple steps.
