  1. Standards on Panasonic 'Q' First Look · · Score: 1

Does this also mean that there will be standards for game consoles now? Even if it is a de-facto standard, it would be nice to just take controllers, memory, etc. from my console to my friends (diff make) console ... oh wait -> someone already thought of that, wasn't it called USB?

  2. Defective on Macrovision CD Protection Bypassed · · Score: 1

If you buy one of these CD's and it turns out to be defective, can you take it back to the store and demand a refund?

  3. Hypocratic Oath? on Confidentiality on Virus Sent Docs? · · Score: 1

I am not really sure how you can be at fault if the documents were sent to you without your request, and then you opened them and discovered that they were trade secrets/plans to take over the world/etc...

Being an information security analyst (one of the many hats that I wear), anything that demands that level of confidentiality is treated VERY differently than "My Letter to my mom.doc"
Documents of that nature have to be encrypted and stored on a SECURE network (aka sitting behind a firewall or localhost network ONLY).

These companies obviously did not take the time to protect their docs, so why should you suffer with information that resides on your computer. You signed no confidentiality agreement nor did you sign a contract.

Personally, if a file came to me and I discovered that I could make $$ by playing the stock market with the information, I would release the information at the same instant that I made the trade(s) - combats the insider trading charge and I get to walk away with lots of $$$$ =)

  4. BSA + M$ = Open Source on Under The Surface Of The BSA Anti-Piracy Campaign · · Score: 1

Between the "gestapo"-like tactics of the BSA sending letters out to every business owner this side of the hemisphere and Microsoft implementing their "new" XP Licensing scheme, it seems as though more and more people are going to be heading to open source. We, as a community, have to make sure that we welcome these people with open arms and help them beat the Windows bug that has plagued them for more than a decade now.

A side note: How long before there is a BSA sending letters to consumers? (Large businesses already have licensing checks and balances, now small/medium businesses are being cracked open ... ) ???

  5. Java - Learning Lang? on Java as a CS Introductory Language? · · Score: 1

I am a student at Saint Louis Univ, and in the computer science dept here, students learn c/C++. (C is taught as the intro course, and C++ is used to teach object oriented concepts). Conversely, in the MIS dept. here, the MIS students learn Java as their programming language of choice. I am in a unique situation where I have taken both sets of classes (I took the Java course(s) because I wanted to learn Java).

Overall, I feel Java is a better language to learn with initially because of two major reasons:
    1) Java does not use pointers - and therefore does not create 99% of the compilation errors that often occur with C++.
    2) Java was designed with Object Oriented design in mind. C++ was not - C++ is basically a bastardized version of C, with a hint of OOP concepts in place.

This does not mean, however, that Java does not have its drawbacks as well. Java is SLOW compared to C/C++, Because things like pointers do not exist in Java, when a programmer comes across such structures in another language, they often become very confused. And finally, Java is also too "easy" to "program" in. Meaning that I can go out and buy a Java development program that will allow me to do 90% of the things that any decent Java instructor will want. Once I figure out how to make them using the tools, I just get rid of the extraneous code. The only Visual C++ tool like that that I can think of is M$ V-C++ - which is non-ANSI compliant anyway.

Overall - Java is a good training-wheel language and is good to start out in.

However, C/C++ have the robustness and the concepts needed for a learning language. Comparitively, Java does not provide key concepts to would-be programmers.

SO - decide what you want to be and pick your poison

  6. I Bought the Apex on What's The Best Combo DVD/VCD/CD/MP3 Player? · · Score: 1

I bought the Apex DVD player based on the fact that it could play MP3 burned discs. As far as I have used it (almost 1 year), there have been no problems. One of the other postings mentioned that it is a bit slow to spin up and I agree ...

My recommendation is if you have the EXTRA cash, buy the Apex to play MP3's and VCD's but purchase a quality (Sony cerca $250 is what I have) DVD player to handle the movies hooked up to the surround sound system. You will enjoy your movies and concerts much more that way.
