Oracle is the sort of company that *will* port 8i to PPC if it becomes a viable server/business platform. I think also that they will make that determination fairly early in the game.

I have to say, yay for apple on this one. I can't wait to get myself a G4 (cube maybe?). Sounds like a blast.

Furthermore, unless I missed it, there was no mention of what operating system it's going to run

Windows '95 OSR2. Complete with real time rendered 3d cards in Solitaire of course. This ought to increase the user base for windows by at least 13! I know I sure couldn't live without 3d rendered cards.

There is one very solid problem with that concept. It's not just scary, it's REAL.

The human race is totally dead set on destroying itself by bettering itself. There is of course a very fat line that needs to be drawn between reasonable usage of biotech chip systems (which will exist, we all know this to be true) for day to day life, and biotech chips just because you can.

In other words, maybe a busy business exec would want to have a cellular phone as part of his head, that directly interfaced with his neural net, so that he could "silently" have a conversation with someone over the phone, while maintaining a verbal conversation simultaneously. Now that would be cool. But there are many pointless (and potentially dangerous) and stupid things that could be done with it, such as augmenting brain patterns or something. As soon as we start messing with our SELF instead of adding on, we have crossed the line into oblivion. There will be no turning back from that one.

Notice i got through this whole thing without saying "borg" once.

"So, copying CDs to your hard drive isn't legal"

    wrong.

it is in fact legal to copy a CD that you own to a hard disk that you own that you intend to continue to own. this does have a legitimate use in that you can back up your music. I know not a single one of you will beleive this, but that is actually what I use my hard disk, musicmatch, and my CD-R drive for. when I scratch or lose a CD, I can make myself a new one. simple, logical prevention. the law allows for that, and rightly so, since I have originally purchased the music.

i-opener, as a corporation has done the only thing that they can to save their profit margin. for the time being. i think that there are many options available to them, most of which have already been outlined above. however, here's some of my thoughts; i-opener is obviously taking a cost loss by selling these units for $100. they are certainly planning on making their money on the service. we all know that. therefore, just about the only way that they can resume selling the i-opener as what it once was, they are going to have to raise the price. the most important fact to realize here though is that they could once again screw themselves over by setting the price too high and losing sales. what needs to happen is they need to come up with a sale price that just slightly exceeds their cost per unit. although profits would be low on an each unit scale, they would still make more money in the long run, because so many more people would buy their product. they could even add the hard drive, cable, keyboard and mouse to a "accessories" line, and make even more money off us lazy people. just my two cents!
