When I was in college a professor of mine told a story that's stuck with me ever since.
He put 8 buttons on his bicycle handle bars (4 on each hand for his non-thumb digits) and could type by pressing combinations of buttons, ie. 8 bits per character. He did this on a cross-america tour, so there was plenty of time.
I ride bicycles, so this worked in my head. I can't really imagine the interface (GUI? HUD?) but the input is interesting.
If you've got enough geek in you it shouldn't be TOO hard to start typing at a reasonable pace, even while grasping your handlebars.
This is such a common theme, I had to comment.
Does your preference of text over multimedia mean that EVERY other person on/. has that same preference? I think emphatically not.
Just because you prefer it some way, please don't expect that to be "the way it is."
I'm making an assumption here, yes, I know, but is your problem with the flu vaccine?
Have you researched alternatives or statistics on the actual rate of occurrence of reactions? http://www.medpagetoday.com/MeetingCoverage/ACIP/27262
You're right. We should all just give up and kill ourselves now.
Just because some PR guy somewhere used a word in a way that doesn't please you doesn't mean it's all for naught and we should just stop trying.
Kepler is doing great science, extending our knowledge of the universe, and if it's being presented in a way that doesn't please you GO THE FUCK AWAY!
Ok, so TFA doesn't say it very clearly but his site does.
This is for a graduate assistant to STEPHEN HAWKING.
My stipend was 1/4 of that at best and, oh yeah, did I mention... This is for a graduate assistant to STEPHEN W. HAWKING.
I know you guys are all so F'ing incredible that you don't need resume bullets or care about other peoples' ideas, but how's about
2012-2013 - Personal assistant to STEPHEN W. HAWKING
Um, if I were eligible I'd be making them KNOW I was their man!
Are you out of your mind? Where will he find time to "Identify the key components of your system. Then for each key component, break it down to it’s parts and dependencies. Then break each one of those out, and so on, until you have a pretty damn good idea of what you have." while he's working his 3rd shift for the day on Saturday after having worked 80 hours the week before.
Yeah, "leap" right out the door. Been there, done that. MGMT doesn't care. They, of course, want the business to succeed and make everyone happy but they have no idea how much of your blood they are asking for or how long before you die or leave. And NO, they won't hire another person.
Seriously?
There are MANY open source tools for windows and some of them are really good for the 'doze sysadmin.
Just because it's open source, doesn't mean the tool is required to ONLY run on Linux, does it?
Has anyone ever "restored" from Crashplan? Right. I've got a buddy, that... well, he hasn't either... except that he needs to and in the month since he lost his files, Crashplan has done nothing to recover them.
Just remember "aggressive" isn't only the guy who finally gets pissed because you won't get out of the passing lane. The people in the passing lane are being just as aggressive by not getting out of the improper lane. That "aggressive" guy has been trying to get around for 5 minutes and finally does something stupid to get around.
Speeding up to keep someone from merging is just as aggressive.
Riding the merge lane to the very end, around everybody else, is just as aggressive.
Etc.
It seems like most comments here are only bashing people with places to go and people to see. I've got too much to do to drive 5 under with 50m of free space to the next guy. I've dreamt of this technology for decades. Antonymous driving would be a god-send.
Driving as overly cautiously as many of you describe is just as dangerous and creates the rage you project onto the other guy.
There are many factors here, many of them revolve around how people interact, not just how fast or close they drive.
Rudeness and disrespect (something/. seems to know more about than most places these days) have a huge impact on driving in general. Be nice to each other!
Don't speed up so the next guy can't merge. Don't cut people off.
Driving slow isn't any safer. Get over that. If it scares you to drive at highway speeds, stay on the back roads or move out of the city.
Don't drive in the passing lane. Yes, lanes are designated. If there's no one in front of you and someone riding your ass, get outta the way and people won't do stupid/angry/offensive/sudden/aggressive things to get around you. It's not making the situation better. It's making it worse. Just slide over. I don't think less of you for it, I'll respect you for it and probably wave with a smile on my face.
Just driving slower isn't any safer. Just because I'm driving faster doesn't make you a "better" or me a "worse" driver. Seriously. Please detach slower from better. They have nothing in common. Have you ever taken a drivers course? I'm not talking about the "Safe Drivers" online course you took to get out of that ticket, but a real course taught by a professional. Competence and velocity are not synonymous.

So, all they have to do is stop human trafficking and they can shoot for the Asteroid? Hmmm. Something seems amiss.
Continued from above.
One thing I forgot:
Our process provides templates for all the BS documents we all hate to write. Half the effort is done by the boiler-plate and the only thing I have to write is my creative part about how I'm getting the job done.
I feel sorry for all you guys. I've worked in "no process" companies before and it sucks. No requirements, no process, no cohesion. Politics were rampant. It was just plain elementary.
These days I work in a company that's been CMMI level 3 certified for years and we have a process in place for each level of necessity; light, medium, heavy, manned-flight. All of our requirements are part of the contract, before any design even begins, and if they change the customer must pay for the change. It's a joy and my creativity is unleashed, not restrained.
Process is not your enemy. It's the lack of buyin. Everyone must participate and ensure the process is held. Requirements definition is part of process and if you don't have stable requirements, you aint got shit.
Again, I love working within our process, whether it's the light one or the manned-flight one. It's well defined and provides a schedule, but doesn't tell me how to write my design/code/test, just that I get it reviewed at all of the proper phases.
Not this time. I'll really give him credit where it's due. He was a really good real-time embedded developer. His code is clean. His thoughts clear and complete. I've participated in many design, code, and test reviews on his work and it's all of the highest quality. He's just a total asshole who, I've heard, has made others cry at meetings due to his acidic nature.
Please don't miss my point. Your experiences make you human and valuable, but it's the attitude that matters most. You can believe everyone in the world, except yourself, are morons. That may or may not be the case. I don't believe you are correct, but that's not my point.
My point is, "It's the attitude that matters most." My guy was derogatory and rude. He did not attend group events, but that doesn't matter. It was his demeaning attitude and antisocial behavior that made him such a negative influence. People avoided him. He ignored direct orders from our, at the time, boss, who was a completely capable and talented leader. He really was/is a fantastic technical specialist, but one I never want to work with again.
I think I must work with you. I'm not saying this IS you, but the people that I've met who hold this opinion "It is bad enough that I have to work with a moron" seem to feel that way about EVERYONE. If everyone is a moron and you are the only person worth a shit, then does that say that out of the entire human race, you (and all of the people like you) are the only ones who AREN'T morons? I mean, the lunch thing is only a small facet of a bigger deal, YOUR ATTITUDE is SHIT!!! I just had you kicked off my program and told the management I never wanted that HIGHLY capable, VERY strong technical person on my team again because his attitude was so bad it was negatively impacting the entire project.
+1
It certainly seems I should be able to allow a few of the things they want to access, but not all, and do it at the OS level.
The developers will just have to level up their gracefulness to handle being disallowed.
To install or not to install is not the right (or only) question.
There must be a better way. One question is whether anyone who makes money off of this cares what is right or wrong and that includes Google. it's all about how much money they can make off us.
Have you ever considered people other than you may have a different lifestyle and thus different likes and dislikes than you? Just because you don't see the point, does that make it completely useless for everyone in the world? Hmmmm.
Let's just be completely racist here and say that there might be some people from India who have been delivered VERY spicy food since they were in utero and probably have a tolerance (and also desire) for heat that you couldn't come close to comprehending. Does that make them macho show-offs? I don't think so.
I know more forces than the Marine Corps are acting in Libya right now, but I was a Marine and the President most certainly has the authority to exert military force without declaring war any time he wants to.
I also know wikipedia isn't an authoritative source, but here's the WP discussion on the USMC on that topic.
Mission
The United States Marine Corps serves as an amphibious force-in-readiness. As outlined in 10 U.S.C. 5063 and as originally introduced under the National Security Act of 1947, it has three primary areas of responsibility:
The seizure or defense of advanced naval bases and other land operations to support naval campaigns;
The development of tactics, technique, and equipment used by amphibious landing forces; and
Such other duties as the President may direct.
This last clause, while seemingly redundant given the president's position as Commander-in-chief, is a codification of the expeditionary duties of the Marine Corps.
Yes, you are.
There's a slight but incredible difference between
Why exactly do I want do this?
and "What could I use this for?"
It's like the difference between "That's crap" and "I think there's a better way."
You don't think so, but it comes off as block-headed.
It's negative and derogatory. I'm so sick of negative responses I can barely stand it.
You insensitive clog. Now I'm all stuck on feeling old the rest of the day.
Or to the simple fact that ... whoosh! just happened.
