  1. Linux emulation on the *BSDs on SCO Hints at *BSD Lawsuits Next Year, And More · · Score: 2, Funny

Having used various *BSDs for years now, I'm always amazed at how well the Linux emulation works. Today, the *BSDs have added the ability to emulate Linux lawsuits. This completely blows away any type of emulation done on any other system, ever. ;^)

  2. Re:Question to AMS Users on iTunes Music Store sells 275,000 Tracks in 18 Hours · · Score: 1

I think your answer is listed here

    9. Purchase of Apple Content
    a. Products Requirements. You acknowledge that use of Products may require the use of other hardware and software products (e.g., the ability to make copies of Products on physical media and render performance of Products on authorized digital player devices), and that such hardware and software is your responsibility. Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage.

    Also, see this

I'm going to suggest Apple offer the ability to redownload the same tracks if your hard drive dies and you failed to burn them to CD. It would be useful. They have a 'Requests and Feedback' link right on the main page of the store.

I have purchased 3 albums already and the sound quality is superb. To anyone using iTunes, that has the sound quality waxing and waning, do this
    iTunes->Preferences->Effects
Turn off Sound Enhancer and Sound Check.

  3. The worm blocks my attempt to move phone service. on MS SQL Server Worm Wreaking Havoc · · Score: 1

I can't move my phone service with Verizon because the worm knocked out their systems nationwide. The first time I called I asked the rep. I spoke with if it was because of the MS SQL worm. She said,"Yes, how did you know?". The next time I called, with the systems still down, the rep. I spoke with said in a very excited tone, that the systems were being attacked by a worm and that American Express was down too. She said it was pretty scary.

I just wanted to move my phone service, and the rep. was like MS SQL worm; and I was like bummer; and it was a really good phone service...

I had Small Linux working on this same laptop. It worked fine. Check out the 4mb Laptop HOWTO at the Linux documentation project for details. The install is pretty painless.

  5. Re:get more memory on Is Mac OS X Slow? · · Score: 1

This is false. I'm sitting here with Mail.app, Chimera, and Terminal all running. The memory usage is under 128MB. And yes, I'm running this on an iBook w/ 128 MB of RAM. I would suggest learning what the numbers displayed by top mean. Does the system swap? Sometimes. Did a similarly configured system running Win2K also swap? Yep. So what does it all mean? Buy the system that allows you to be most productive.

You can already get CD's, or at least links to them based on what you heard on the radio. In this case it is Web Radio. Check out www.digitallyimported.com. They have a couple high quality streams, forums to talk with people about what you've heard, and links to the CD's that they are playing on a constantly updated playlist. This, in my opinion, is the right direction for music to take.

  8. Re:Programming is a necessary tool on Are Written Computer Science Exams a Fair Measure? · · Score: 1

The idea that you need to be very good at programming to be a good computer scientist is completely false. There is alot more to CS then whether or not someone can crap out a few hundred lines of code. Understanding the logic behind the code you write and being able to prove it are what is most important. Computer code describes algorithms, not the other way around. You can do plenty of research in CS without knowing how to program. This is why most schools make you take so many math classes in addition one or two pure programming classes.

  9. Re:Uh oh on Kazaa, Verizon Propose Compulsory Music Licensing · · Score: 2, Informative

I've been using Verizon DSL for a couple of months now. Not only did they help me setup my connection with Mac OS X, a system that they don't support; the tech I spoke with, a senior tech, gave me a list of PPPOE clients for GNU/Linux that have worked with Verizon. He also said that IP Masguerading should also work fine and is a lot cheaper than getting a router for my home LAN. My service has been down for a total of 2 hours since I've had it. I'm also always getting max speeds. They may have made some stupid moves at the corporate level, but I've found that their techs are top notch.

  11. Service was free when I bought the 7.0 Box Set on Red Hat Network for the Masses · · Score: 1

I purchased the 7.0 boxed set some time ago and originally the service was supposed to be offered for a limited time. RedHat then decided to give the service for free to one system if you bought the boxed set. I still have free access.

Are they still giving the service away for free if you purchase the official boxed set? I've used Caldera 2.4 and Debian 2.4, but I came back to RedHat because of the RedHat Network service. I did use apt-get extensively when I had Debian, but I found RHN easier to use. Just my opinion. This is the right price for this service, and I posted this opinion to RedHat's feedback form. I'm going to get my brother and sister to sign up, as I got them to start using RedHat some time ago at 7.0. Of course, my brother still uses Windows for Everquest.;(
