Isn't coding itself an art form? I know that most people can't see it, but I truly think that a beautifully written piece of source can rival Shakespear... Just my opinion on the subject. Be careful when you make that distinction there Taco!
I'm reminded of DD Harison from Heinlein's 'The Man Who Sold the Moon' I certainly hope that he can pull this off. We need to have private citizens able to get off of the planet before we can see private spaceflights become a true reality. I think that between this, and the man going up to the MIR space station, the true privitization of space flight.
On the other hand, if this guy ends up just being a crack head who wins a Darwin Award, it'll probably have the same effect on private spaceflight that the Challenger did for American Space Flight. Hopefully, This will be seen in the history books as the thing that set off the great private space of the early 21st century.
Hopefully, this man will be able to get his ship up even if the government says no... He can try to take it out of the country, or just do it any damned way.
I can't really say I agree with the people who say that we are 'endangering lives' I think that we need more of this. This sends out, to my mind at least, a message to those in charge that there isn't going to be able to be secrecy forever. They need to learn. If a harsh lesson is all they will listen to, so be it. It's not like there's a huge surprise here. Even for the family members, they have to understand what they are getting into when they decide to deal with a CIA agent in their midst.
However, you are sober enough to recognize what can happen to your karma if you don't post AC... I can't believe Mods decided to waste points on you. Sheesh.
On the topic, I didn't even know about the Linux conference in San Jose. Since I'm close enough to that one, I think I may show up at the next... I just can't see Kansas as a big magnet for Linux. I'm sure there are users there, I just don't think computers when I think KC. On the other hand, maybe people should start setting up the First Amendment Defense BBQ while they're there?
The Yuppie lifestyle? Are you on fucking drugs? I don't know very many gen X geeks who can say they didn't see and love a few episodes of Speed Racer when they were growing up. Even the few I know can see the fun and camp of the show when they finally do see it. Not to try to broadly sterotype anyone, this is just the way that I have observed things to be.
Also, of the yuppies I have met, most of them would be appaled at the idea of having something as 'childish' as this car.
Easy. The hope is, people will assume that the reserve is ridiculously high, and bid over the reserve price, thus starting things off with a higher price, and ending up with much more money than would have been gotten otherwise.
Looks like this is another great victory for the government against MS. Microsoft has helped alot to pioneer the industry, and allow for PC's to be as cheap as they are, by running on any hardware. That, in turn, has allowed for the door to be opened for Linux.
However, now the time has passed. The MS monopoly has gone on for too long, and something needs to come in and break them up if anyone hopes to get their foot in the door.
iCab is great. I work Tech Support for the Mac, and I abuse the hall out of iCab... I send alot of people, because we're forced to tech all the way back to Mac OS 7.0.1, and iCab is the only browser that can make a secure connection for any pre OS 7.6.1 machine. It works on 7.5 no problem, and 7.0.1 with an upgrade... (Can't remember which now... Haven't dealt with a legacy machine in a few days...)
Well, having used the hell out of the IE 5.0 version for the Macintosh, it seems they went out of their way to feel like Mozilla/NS 6. If they can actually create a version of a browser and mail client that can beat the stability of the (mostly weak) *nix browser market, then I think there's a decent chance I'd walk away from Mozilla...
Then, on the flip side, it's doubtful they'd do the work for a port, even if it was minimal. The *nix community is notorious for MS Hatred, and it's not likely that anyone in the community would want to actually USE an MS product...
I like the addition of Newbie's corner... It's exactly the sort of thing I would like to see more of. I'm just starting to get into *nix, specifically Linux at this point, but would like to learn FreeBSD as well. I don't really find myself overwhelmed with alot of resources. Even Linuxnewbie.com didn't really have the sorts of things I'm looking for, such as a comprehensive list of commands for different distros. Hopefully, this mag will help out along those lines.
But, in this case, it is useful. According to the article, it is potentially higher quality, while, at the same time stripping the royalties away, making it a truly free format for people to be able to use, rather than a format which must give $5 to a group of german scientists every time they want to give away their free MP3 encoder. There. Enough article for you? -Dusty Hodges
Finally! We do need to have many more things open sourced, and what better than every geeks baby, the MP3! Hopefully people will start to realize that open source projects are the only way to go...
The only downside I can see is that this may bring even more fire from the RIAA. One of the arguements I have seen many times here is that MP3s are lossy, and thus aren't close to being the same quality as the original... Let's hope these things aren't high enough quality to blow that out of the water, or we'll be seeing a whole lot of heat being drawn on it...
Then again, maybe that's what we need to bring Open Source to the conciousness of the general public... -Dusty Hodges
Thank you my friend. I seriously hope that things like this are capable of bringing a wake up call to all of those in America who allow everything their children learn to come from the television and the computer. To show them that, indeed, those who we trust with such duties are as corrupt as our politicians.
I want to see an America where parents pay attention to their children, shower them with love, and teach them all of the beauty and love of Natalie Portman.
Actually, Lenny Bruce made a really good point about this. Catholicism wants to bring in the poor, unwashed, huddled masses. If you're some guy who lives in a dump of a house, you aren't going to want to go hang out at a dump. You're going to want to go somewhere with alot of land, and beautiful stained glass.
I don't think you have to be an 37337 HaX0R to know not to click on an infected file... It's like saying that people shouldn't know better then to have unprotected sex, and are 'victimized' by AIDS. There's plenty of education in the media now.
Maybe that's what we need! Public service announcements for AV programs, and 'scanning files'
Remember. When you use someone's floppy, you're sleeping with every computer they slept with.
But really, it does make sense that older people find it harder to learn... It also makes sense that that's a horrible sterotype... Somewhat akin to not hiring a black person because they all join gangs. Agism is horrible, but hard to stop...
I'm sorry, but I see a huge difference here. If you're in jail, I can let you go when we find out that we were wrong. When you can raise the dead, let me know.
Speaking of which, this is a pretty frigtening story. I hate the idea that, like computers, it's getting to where you have to have a cell phone, much like a computer, and now it's almost going to be like a national ID card. Dear god. How long before the sub-dermal implants become a requirement?
Carry a cell phone? How long do you think it's going to be until it's going to be a sub-dermal chip? First for parolees, and people under restraining orders, and then, well, we just need to make sure that the general populace is being good... Then again, we just need to use cell phones if we want to know where in the wide brave world our citizens are...
Remember, the French government's hands aren't exactly clean. Remember their language purity laws? They aren't exactly in a position to be making moral judgements.
Then who is?
/.ers. Haven't you realized? We're the true voice for the world. The US shouldn't police the world./. should. The top 10 moderated comments shall become our bill of rights.
Wait... Does this mean that the SOuth Park movie was banned in France? I would have thought they would have made a big deal out of that, since Matt and Trey wanted controversy, and Americans like to laugh at the French, as a rule...
Hey now... They don't need girlfriends... Remember the line from the old song...
"If you can't get laid in the SCA, you can't get laid at all!"
Wish I could remember the rest of that song...
Isn't coding itself an art form? I know that most people can't see it, but I truly think that a beautifully written piece of source can rival Shakespear... Just my opinion on the subject. Be careful when you make that distinction there Taco!
