  1. The power of ignorance. on Oxford Yanks Student Page Over Spoof DeCSS · · Score: 1

This is ridiculous. There is no way in hell something like this should have been done. I think it just shows the fact that people aren't paying any attention to technology that they have control over. It's all a bunch of stuffed shirts who wouldn't know a GB from a BK Kids Meal who make the decisions about technology. Now that it's something a generation has been forced to grow up with, I just hope that people who understand it get into office before there's not much left in America to defend.

Exactly... Not to post another 'Me Too', but this is nothing but bullshit... The story was horribly written, and intellectual property is not music.

Metallica is, in this case, horribly hypocritical. They say they don't want their music to be 'a commodity', but they allow labels to sell it. I personally think we need to revamp the copyright laws... I think all art, be it code, books, or music, should be written by artists, not buisness people. I think the GNU public license should be the new buisness model. I don't want 'art' from the Spice Girl, or some other group made by a corp. I want art from artists, who make their art for the love of the art.

2)If there is one sort of point that should be brought to our attention on a regular basis, it should be censorware, and all other things censor related. The more this is brought to our attention, the more likely that people are going to get off of their asses, and do something about it... (Letter writing, etc...)

  17. Re:Windows-Tyize on WinDSL Coming? · · Score: 3

Unfortunatly, not that much of the market isn't windows. If you want to make a cheap piece of hardware by using software, you have to focus on the Win side to make any money... Software based isn't going to do it for anyone else anyway... Linux users are smart enough not to pay good money for software based modems. But eventually, someone on LinModems will post their drivers for it. It's bound to happen. I truly think that this is no big loss for any other community. As I can verify, being the owner of an LT Win modem, software based modems are pieces of shit. If I were a more informed geek at the time I had purchased my machine, I would have made sure to get a hardware based modem... When crap is being peddled to the masses, why be upset that they aren't marketing to you? Software based modems are, quite simply, the fast food of connectivity hardware. If you want something that is any good for you, you simply have to go with something else. Just my opinion, Dusty Hodges

  22. Problems in Britain on UK Censorship: Demonic Consequences · · Score: 1

Brilliantly phrased. I hadn't realized things had gotten so bad in Brittan. I usually find myself fairly clouded by Ethnocentrism, and don't remember that not everyone has a first amendment. I was thinking that I was going to skip America after some laws were passed (specifically California's Prop 22) and I think that Holland is fairly wonderful... But that is just based on rumours I have heard.

Further, to actually comment on this case. I know I speak for most folk reading this when I say that this is evil and foul. The very idea that people can lash out at that which they don't understand is absolutely the bottom. The only thing I can think of is that we should create a new post in our governments. Call it the national geek. Applicants must be between 20-40, and has the power of veto on all laws involving the internet. It's the only solution I can think of. Either that, or we have to wait 40 years, until the geeks and the internet generation is in power.
