  1. Re:A few tips on Rechargeable Batteries - Yes or No? · · Score: 1

One important tip. Devices made with alkaline batteries in mind expect a nominal voltage of 1.5V. Many of them don't have a DC-DC voltage converter which means that if you put NiMH cells in them they will think they are partially discharged. NiMH cells have nominal voltage of 1.2V.

So if your device shuts off at 1.15V, which for an alkaline cell would indicate "empty", your NimH cell would still have plenty juice remaining. This of course means that for some devices, you won't be able to use all the energy stored in a NiMH cell.

My NEX-II mp3 player has this problem. Supposedly the newer model called NEX-IIe doesn't.

Battery Palm Pilots can be told what cells they have in 'em.

With flashlights it won't matter much except they will be significantly dimmer. Check this out: I=V/R, P=V*I so: Power P=V*V/R.

    For 1.5V: P=2.25/R
    For 1.2V: P=1.44/R

Which means that fresh alkalines will be 56% brighter than freshly charged NimH cells, but due to their discharge characteristics they will drop voltage much more than NiMHs will.

Summary: If your device can work/tolerate voltages down to 1.05V per cell, then the only difference between alkaline and nimh will be increased usage times.

  2. OpenGL? lets make a usefull cell phone first. on OpenGL Coming to your Cellphone · · Score: 4, Interesting

There is absolutely no need for anything 3D on cell phones. What I would like to see, and so far I haven't seen in Europe, is a cell phone featuring:
    - full calendar with appointments, alarms, repeats and no-ringing "timespans".
    - nice T9 SMS entry like Sagems (as opposed to "menu bloated" alternate word lookups in Nokia's T9 implementation)
    - FM _and_ AM radio tuner
    - MP3/OggVorbis playback capability with CF storage
    - 300hour standby
    - flip-out microphone so people can hear what I'm saying
    - amber backlight instead of white/green/blue
    - notepad/voicerecord/simple_finance app
    - GPRS, HSCSD, Bluetooth

If I could find a set that had ALL of the above I could replace my walkman, mp3 player and a pocket calendar. Unfortunately I have not seen one cell phone that has all of the above. Anybody has seen such a beast in a standard cell-phone form factor?

OpenGL? Sure, 3d menus, crappy 3d games in 160x160, will wonders never cease... arghh

    > After all the US has been happy to prop up corrupt, undemocratic and brutal regime there just to ensure the free flow of oil to fuel SUVs and cheap fuel.

Do you suggest that if all americans drove econoboxes it would change anything? Oh sure, Saudi Arabia would not be as wealthy as they are right now. Of course none of enlightened european powers are consuming Saudi's oil. Neither are they paying good money for the only resource which allows Saudi Arabia to be something more than just a spot in a desert. Think of it this way, if not for their oil, Saudi Arabia could support (as in FEED!) only part of their population. Aside from a destination for pilgrimage to all Muslims they would be NOTHING.

    > And since our country is all about money, money, money at the expense of little things like decency and human rights

BS!!! STFU!! Go to europe and live there for few years. Europeans are just as money motivated, corrupt and dependant on the technologies, oil and other "goods" of globalization as is US of A.

What do you suggest? embargos? Nothing that America will or will NOT do, can help average Saudi. If Saudis want to change their system then THEY have to take the initiative. It will take time, maybe as much as two or three generations, but the results will be long lasting. Forcing our (american/western) ideals on Saudis will not succeed. Look at eastern european countries, there was very little blood shed when abandoning so called "communism". Eastern Europeans wanted their freedoms and rights, they risked their lives, proffesional carrers, opportunities to go to college and after five decades succeded. There is no chance that Poland, Czech Rep. or Hungary will go "back".

BTW it was american companies "helping" restrict flow of information and not _evil_ american government! Grow up, get involved, don't invest in companies that YOU find morally questionable.

  4. BSD vs GNU vs proprietary licenses on Freedom or Power? · · Score: 1

I have no problem with neither of the above mentioned licences, but I reject anybody's claim that I should not have the right to choose license for software I write. RMS is doing a disservice to open source community which can more than stand on its own merits. After all, it was the VOLUNTARY will of developers to assign GNU licences to their software which made open source what it is right now. Instead of just stopping and seeing how far FSF got, and how influential GNU licensed software has become, RMS will once again allienate open source lurkers and old hats alike.

Software is damn expensive to create and maintain, but as long as a given company doesn't employ software patents, DMCA and like, I don't have a problem with proprietary licenses. They have their right to exist just as does BSD license.

  5. Flight Sims and Tactical FPS on Vanishing Game Genres · · Score: 1

Granted, good flight sims are hard to come by nowadays. But not all is lost, Fly! (2K) is the best civilian sim to date and flight unlimited series was very good as well. I haven't tried the military sims lately since most of them have hardware requirements far exceeding that of my box. On the topic of new game genres, I would like to note that I've found Tactical FPS like Rouge Spear to be very refreshing union of a strategy turn based games like Xcom series and FPS like Quake. In Rouge Spear one can be killed with just one shot thus is forced to use strategy and suprise to succeed. This game has to be played to understand what I'm talking about. Missions last between 30min and 1.5hr!!!!

Aviation combustion engines are air cooled. As such
at high power output, on takeoff, they need help cooling
their engines. Leaded fuel is somewhat better for this
as well as being significantly less volatile (emergency landings).
Also all these engines require 100+ octane fuel which
I believe is much cheaper when leaded. Using lower
octane fuel cannot take place as all of them have
2200-2700rpm redline (props are direct drive) thus
    knocking would destroy these.
