    VMs aren't just for running "installed" operating systems. :)

    A live CD image boots nicely under QEMU and VirtualBox. Grab some .isos and enjoy.

    http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ is small, light, and fast, but you can run Ubuntu and similar images.

    If you remaster your image with custom software, you can use it as easily as a premade .iso.

    The Right = "the Religious Right", and they aren't big on personal liberty with the exception (which I support) of the Second Amendment. Their version of "freedom" doesn't include gays, atheists, or anyone else who doesn't thump a Bible.

    Otherwise accomplished people can go brain-dead when it comes to backing up data. I think many of them resent admitting that data is perishable.

    I tell customers that if they don't learn how to back up their stuff, they don't care about backing up their stuff, and not to mourn its loss.

    Scientists ought to seek out other countries for funding. The brain drain can work in reverse.

    If China were smart, it would buy up the scientific talent chased out of the West by religious oppression. China was once the most advanced country in the world. There is no reason that shouldn't happen again. The Communists knew what to do about religion, and did it in a manner no harsher than that which spread religion in the first place.

    Why is that a Troll? There are almost zero secular Conservatives, and not enough to make policy.

    Religion and science are opposing views, and religionists have a history of stifling science and killing scientists they thought threatened belief in their imaginary celestial friend.

    No coincidence that the Religious Right in the US, who compose the vast majority of the Tea Party, are funded by oil billionaires among others.

    It's the perfect storm of anti-science superstition and corporate greed.

    OTOH, Linux still supports plenty of hardware for which Windows driver support was dropped, forcing Windows users who "upgrade" to buy new peripherals.

    I like being given free peripherals, so I have no complaint, but those who buy new ones because they can no longer get drivers may be less pleased.

    Going on a turd hunt for scanner drivers and software for Windows vs. just plugging in my "inherited" HP scanner to my Ubuntu machine? I'll take option 2. :)

    Odd. All the turbine and jet engines I maintained during 26 years in the Air Force must not have got that message. They idled quite nicely, had "idle" throttle settings, etc.

    Small turbines WOULD be nice for a hybrid though,since they could charge a hydraulic accumulator for rapid restart (in the manner of the F-16 Jet Fuel Starter). That accumulator could have both a backup electric pump and a hand pump (the hand pump for the F-16 is tiring to use, but it's very small and works fine).

    That's called "safety wiring", and has been used for many, many years to keep aircraft fasteners from coming loose. It is also standard on much aerospace ground equipment, and would be normal for such an automotive turbine.

    Depends on the diameter of the turbine and how stout a band is designed into the case. Turbine gensets have been around for many decades in the commercial and military aircraft world.

    Modern materials like those used in AFV spall liners are plenty adequate to contain any frags.
