  1. Re:Microsoft helps the internet on Microsoft Conducts Massive Botnet Takedown Action · · Score: 1

I *do* blame Microsoft, they created their OS with so little security that the early versions didn't even HAVE limited users. This meant that for nearly a decade, software developers were accustomed to have god-like rights on the machine. Linux have ALWAYS had a root account that isn't used for day-to-day activities doesn't suffer from that because the unix guys (back in the day) though "hmm, maybe every application on here SHOULDN'T be able to crash the mothership..."

It was Microsoft's lack of forethought and then their laid-back approach when it started to become an issue. We knew in window 2000 that this was going to be a SERIOUS issue, yet they waited until VISTA to even make the default user non-admin.

Developers may be party to blame, but Microsoft was the one that gave them those godly powers in the early days.

Turns out the *only* way to play flac on a windows machine is with FooBar (audio program) or VLC. PITA!

Maybe in the US, but here in Canada we have a recycling program. Every time you buy a piece of electronic equipment, a recycling fee is added to your bill. This means that we can now take ANY electronic device to the recyclers for FREE. If you have a *large* quantity, you can even arrange for them to pick it up, for FREE! It's very similar to the oil situation, almost any gas station with a garage will take used oil for free and send it to the recyclers, because you've already paid the recycling fee when you bought it.

I'm not sure if you fully understand what a "zombie" process is. A zombie process is a process that has ended, but the parent process (high MISSION CRITICAL application) has not "closed" the process yet. Killing the process tree would take down the mission-critical app. rm'ing the process would allow a new process (possibly not owned by said app) to start and if the app tried to eventually close or even check that process, it would segfault the entire app WITHOUT that 10-15 minutes notice.

To all the people against open source (probably few in this crowd), this is a PRIME example of why close-source is bad. Even if this guy's company was not allowed to redistribute the software (like a normal software license), had they been given the code, he probably could have fixed the bug in a fraction of the time he's spent dealing with it. And the next time the system was forced to reboot, BOOM throw in the fixed binaries!
