"supaghetto" used to be in my apt building.

"HackedByChinese" used to be there too. It was unsecured, and did have a default name... I thought I'd help them out.

We have a high turnover in our apt building. Possibly because people think it's a dump filled with computer nerds. Maybe.

Because there's a difference between what's legal (domain of the license) and what's ethical (I can do this, but should I?).

Good example from my current (retail) job: we have the option of partnering with a credit card processor that offers those mag-stripped gift cards. They're a lot easier for our sales people to deal with, since they're treated just like a debit card, and our customers like them.

But after finding out more details of the program, we WON'T do it, because of the "maintenance fee." It's "waived" for the first year, but after that, several dollars per month are just taken off the account by the CC processor. They not only charge us for the service, but they also get to steal our customers' money?

My boss is very ethically-minded, and won't have anything to do with it. It's more than the fear of angering our customers and driving them away; it's just not how he wants to treat his customers.

  3. Laptop + Lap = "You voided your warranty." on Worst Explanation From Tech Support? · · Score: 2, Interesting
My Titanium PowerBook's screen bumpers (little plastic/rubber nubs, prevent screen from touching keyboard) deteriorated and smeared away; I first noticed it when the gunk got on my hands. By that point, however, my screen had already scraped against the trackpad bezel and left a mark.

Not only was it within Apple's one year warranty, I had also forked over $350 for the AppleCare extension, so I could have the privilege of calling and telling them about the defect. The Phone Technician I spoke with was slightly infuriating. It eventually got fixed, but I had to deal with a local tech instead of direclty through Apple.

Tech: Under what conditions do you use your PowerBook?
Me: Mostly, it's on my desk at work. At home, I sit down with it for a few hours.
Tech: Do you use it on your lap at home?
    Me: *blink* Um, yes...
Tech: Using it on your lap probably caused overheating, and that won't be covered under Apple's warranty.
Me: *fuming* But it's a laptop...
Tech: Actually, sir, it's a portable...

Apple never calls it a "laptop" on the site; I guess most computer manufacturers have moved away from that term because the systems just keep getting faster and hotter.

There are, however, many promotional pictures of people using iBooks and PowerBooks on their lap. *shakes fist*

You can't dig up his corpse; his ashes are in orbit.

At least they were until they burned up in re-entry, which was probably two or three years ago:

"Celestis Inc., a Texas-based company, said [Roddenberry's and Timothy Leary's] ashes, along with those of 22 other fans of space exploration, were on board... a Pegasus rocket was launched from a Lockheed L-1011 jetliner 36,000 feet (11,000 meters) over the Canary Islands.

"Each of the 24 "passengers" were placed into a vial the size of a lipstick holder. Their ashes will orbit the Earth for six years before they re-enter the atmosphere and burn up."
