  1. Getting emotional about software isn't rare on Guido Von Rossum on Python · · Score: 1
I haven't run across an OS or language that doesn't have emotionally invested supporters. Plenty will even get passionate about their favorite word processor, multimedia player, window manager, MTA. Has Guido never read USENET, or /. for that matter?

Given a choice between Perl and Python, I'd choose Ruby.

  2. Re:This ought to really catch on with Republicans on Fiddler on the RUF · · Score: 1

If it did catch on with Americans, who would the early adopters be? If Honda Insight buyers are any guide, it would be Republicans, who among Insight owners outnumber Democrats by two-to-one. Counterintuitive?

  3. MSLinux won't help MSFT stock on Will Linux Save Microsoft? · · Score: 1
Sure Microsoft could release their own Linux distribution with proprietary add-ons. There's no reason to think they could sustain Windows-like revenue from a Linux distribution. Windows' massive profitability comes from Windows' market dominance and a monopoly on selling Windows. MSLinux will have neither.

Internet Explorer illustrates my point I think. Sure, Microsoft won the ~third generation browser war and will probably win the ~fourth generation (0=www 1=mosaic 2=navigator/older IE 3=communicator/newer IE, 4=XML aware browsers). How much profit has this generated for Microsoft? Hard to quantify, but certainly nothing of the sort Microsoft gets from Windows and Office. The browser is free, and AFAIK Microsoft has always lost money on its web sites.

  4. Foresight Institute on Geek Charities? · · Score: 1
"Foresight Institute's goal is to guide emerging technologies to improve the human condition. Foresight focuses its efforts upon nanotechnology, the coming ability to build materials and products with atomic precision, and upon systems that will enhance knowledge exchange and critical discussion, thus improving public and private policy decisions.

One of the things they're doing is pushing for open source nanotech designs and tools.

  5. Doesn't make sense to convert existing mp3s on Ogg Vorbis Hardware? · · Score: 2
Both are lossy formats, the quality of your mp3->vorbis files will necessarily be lower than the "original" mp3. Do however use vorbis for new encoding.

I don't know anything about sound hardware or any that may support vorbis.

I really replied to this so I could say "cool name Mr. Gunga-Din!" (Gunga Din seems to be the name of a Kipling poem and a film, though I first heard of it as the name of a band long time ago Sonic Youth drummer Jim Sclavunos).

  6. PCMS or Subversion someday on Searching For Perfect Configuration Management Tool? · · Score: 1
PCMS looks interesting, though nothing is available yet.

It appears Subversion would like to be a CVS replacement, development looks active.

  7. indoor plants may help on Curious About Indoor Air Quality? · · Score: 1

I've read various accounts of just how helpful indoor plants might be, some claiming a few spider plants (supposedly among the best, I have ~20 in my 2br apartment and a few in my office) help, some claiming you'd need a rainforest in the building to make an appreciable difference. A quick web search turns up the Plants for Clean Air Council.

  8. Sketch and Killustrator on Free Software for Scalable Vector Graphics? · · Score: 1

According to their webpages Sketch and KIllustrator support SVG (export only for the latter).

  9. Re:The market seems to like it on Michael Cowpland Resigns From Corel · · Score: 2

Actually trading was stopped on CORL before the announcement. We'll see if the market likes the news tomorrow. I think it will. Cowpland has been a negative for Corel for years.

  10. Re:What is really significant for Corel this week. on Corel Sells GraphicCorp Division · · Score: 2

Corel may need cash badly, but this deal didn't get them any. They got a 23% stake in Hemera and no cash. See http://dailynews.yahoo. com/h/nm/20000717/tc/corel_dc_3.html.

  11. Saudi Arabia, Gulf States? on Techie Friendly Towns, Worldwide? · · Score: 1
When I was a kid (70s and 80s) I often heard that you could earn a large premium (over U.S. wages) working in the middle east, particularly in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Anyone know what the story these days is, both job/money wise and tech infrastructure wise? I'd guess that at least Dubai must have some opportunities.

  12. Vaporware on Microsoft Unveils The X Box · · Score: 1

The holiday shopping season for 2001 is still ~1.75 years away. Better than even odds that an 'X-box' will never be sold to a consumer (well, maybe a prototype will end up on eBay in the distant future).

  14. pre-IPO Corel stock on Corel Linux FAQ · · Score: 1

Why all the hype over the Red Hat IPO? You can get Corel stock at pre-pre-IPO prices now! :)

I'm only half joking. I have some COSFF already and may buy more if their distribution (and marketing for it) look good and the price doesn't go way up before then.
