  1. does this mean no commercials? on Music From The Heavens - For A Fee · · Score: 1

If a nominal amount will free me of the annoying commercials, AND if they'll find a way to put it in your car, I'd probably go for it ;-). I think of the radio as much more of a car product, where I want to occassionally get traffic updates and most of the time listen to music. And, yes, 80s music does sound quite appealing to me... I guess my age is showing.

  2. human genome 99% only on Download The Human Genome · · Score: 1

The human genome is only 99% complete. The last 1% will apparently take years. This is due to the method used to discover the genome. In addition, only the composition is known, the function of the genes is far from known for many (I think most) genes.

    Still, the sharing is cool.

PS I posted this before but with the cookies turned off I came off as a coward... Oh well, that's usually true..

  3. Same prediction, different reason on Irrational Exuberance · · Score: 1
In late 1996 Shiller and Campbell had a meeting with Alan Greenspan (which later produced the famous "irrational exuberance" _question_, by Greenspan). At the time Campbell and Shiller claimed markets were way over valued and the herd has taken over.

Is it any wonder that 4 years and 3X later he still thinks so? What bugs me is pegging it on technology. It seems to me that technological advancement (new technologies like the internet, or getting over technology-blockers like M$) is at the heart of any economic boom at any time. In previous periods it was just different technologies, but there was just as much skepticism about them at the time.

Also, a quick note on herd mentality: What was not mentioned in the article, and probably also not in the book, is that there is a whole body of economic and financial research on rational herd behavior. This research shows that it is in fact rational for investors to follow other investors' actions (since they infer information from that action). This would put the herd mentality and irrational exuberance at odds. By the way, the herd is most likely to break under a volatile environment in terms of underlying information (not necessarily stock prices). Perhaps the DOJ action (which increases the uncertainty re:M$'s prospects) is acting as a catalyst and forcing the (rational, or close to rational) herd to re-evaluate it's information. If you'd like more information on rational herd behavior, you can check

and the references therein (this paper connects herd behavior in a changing environment with the IPO decision).

  4. (soft)Modems next? on Compaq's PJB-100 MP3 Player Open-Sourced · · Score: 1
This is great, but what I'd really like to see is soft modems that can be run effectively w/Linux. I heard that Connexant is currently working on one. I also hope that Compaq and Dell and other retailers would at least bother to specifically label modems that aren't supported by Linux. The last laptop I bought I had to return since it had a winmodem that appeared on the spec as just a modem.

Is it possible that the existance of decent (=nonM$) OS's is finally sinking in. Pigs are sprouting wings and getting ready...

  5. other things need revision too on ACM Programming Contest Results Revised · · Score: 1

I went to the ACM site to check out the full list of teams (looking for my alma mater, Technion) and
found that they need to revise their code as well (see below for the error message).

    a) Maybe _they_ should hire a medalist...
    b) Obviously, they should have used Linux.

    I got:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'

[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified

    /past/icpc2000/Finals/RosterPublicFull.asp, line 11

    It's at http://acm.baylor.edu/past/icpc2000/Finals/
    and then click on teams.
