Practically, yes it is tax without representation, but I fear that legally it's just a cost, which isn't technically the same thing, even though it actually might as well be. It's maybe what we get for letting lawyers become law makers.
And this was voted to -1 when I wrote this? Ya, slashdot has smart people with considered opinions, yep, you betcha.
This is so obviously true that whoever did all that downvoting IS THE PROBLEM.
You're largely right and still not complete. If we didn't allow the guys who do the pipes to also own the content creators, the whole NN thing would be moot.
I see by the score on this and the replies that the "control the narrative" trolls are out tonight - I won't waste mod points against the flood of ignorance. Yes, there's a difference. Rotten meat is different than rotten vegetables, BFD. Both are corrupt as..., it's just that a different set of big money interests own one vs the other, with lots of overlap. Not one initiative in my entire > 60 years has been pro little guy. Not one has done anything but boost big biz, big pharma, MIC, you name it. None represent me, or us. That's where there's no difference. It's just a matter of this party is better for pharma, that one better for Boeing and so forth. But none are for ME. If elections mattered, they wouldn't hold them. And anyone who's been paying attention and has critical thinking facilities knows this. Why was the last real infrastructure project in Ike's administration? Since public indoctorination disguised as school and substituted for parenting...things are downhill all the way. If you're not old enough to have observed this for yourself, ask someone who is. Don't bullshit us Joshua - learn before spouting.
Yeah, they're different. But it's without meaning. Look at all the policy changes between say Bush and Obama - I couldn't tell, but it seemed Obama was slightly more aggressive at starting more wars, and reaching into my pocket to benefit big pharma, that it was anything other than a matter of degree - both sucked.
Neither walked their talk. Big difference, eh?
Which is destroying us - by amping ultra unreasoning partisanship. Friend against friend, brother against brother - in my 60+ year life I've never seen it like this. It's like the shoe shop ray from Hitchhiker's guide, but for dirty politics. This sucks.
For Russian Bot training? They seem to be able to do anything, and are everywhere causing all events! I want to be in the mix! (/s in case someone is that dumb)
Yep, no 2nd degree stuff, this is the same as murder for hire (on the cheap). Should have the same penalties. There is malice aforethought, obviously. Just because you tried to hire a low competence hitman on the cheap shouldn't be extenuating.
Foxconn and others know that things slow down after the holidays, but this is more than usual - so they ALL say. Now if Apple normally told the truth or spoke at all about sales transparently, this wouldn't be in dispute. But since they hide the truth, well...who knows? Samsung didn't even cut the 50% that others have had to. Maybe they're hoping to sell those OLEDs yet.
Didn't you mean "the government desperately want" or "the elite", MIC, or similar? As pointed out, Hollywood's been doing this for quite awhile. And our government admits to wanting to "control the narrative". They didn't even hide the RFP's for it. I'll just leave this here: https://phys.org/news/2011-10-...
You're being too kind in assuming that they want to stop crime against citizen/civilians in the first place. Of course they don't need this, we're already in the Stainless Steel Rat's world (interesting SciFi by Harry Harrison, long ago that just happened to predict this reality).
Not protect us - they couldn't do that in the Florida shooting with warning and a real name ahead of time - not exactly encryption that held them back. But man, if anyone serious starts organizing some real dissent, they need to know stat so they can nip it in the bud before people notice what's going on. As long as it goes like "well, Earl was always a little off" when they carry the dissenter away, they keep power.
These are, after all, the actions of a government that's afraid of its people for all the wrong reasons - they know what they did and are scared to death of what we might do when we know for sure ourselves.
If they were afraid FOR us, they'd be acting a lot differently. Even the mainstream media would pick up the dramatic change in tone and transparency about actions and motivations.
Most other opsys have significant security flaws to allow "more efficient" gaming via giving direct access to hardware. And if you look at windows (I don't know as much about OSX but hey, BSD) - things like OLE/COM/ActiveX/stupid mixing of code and data - keep that away from me.
Even using Wine lets you get some of the badware infections. Why on earth would I want that?
Far better to get enough people moved over to real opsys so that software vendors will support them.
Of course, they'll find out their cheap tricks that made their stuff crashy on windows won't fly at all if we stick to the good architectures and rules...and they'll have to learn to write better code. Meanwhile...some decent stuff is showing up on Linux already (or finally, depending on your point of view).
How is that a bad thing?
*I* don't even know the phone number for the one built into my car...
It's still handy to order pizza when I'm on the way home and 20 min from the make-to-order place.
I don't want incoming calls. My time "out and about" is MY time. I don't need distraction just because someone else is bored or wants to sell me something. Try email if you want to get in touch with me.
I'd mod this funny or insightful if I hadn't posted. However, it IS worthwhile noting that modern recorded music has been pre-trashed to "fit" through the hole that is crappy reproduction gear. Yeah, I'm a recovering audiophool - maybe entirely recovered, having gotten into production, rather than reproduction...it's a different world to be sure, with a different flavor of BS.
Can't make real bass without moving a lot more air than anything in a box that size can manage...even if you allow doppler distortion, which sounds nasty. You can fool the human ear (there are patents on the tricks) but you can't make ripples in my drink from across the room or fool my guests into going out to roll up their car windows on a sunny day with recorded thunder. Of course, no one tests with the hard stuff, even when using just ears. Recorded music, especially these days, has little to no relation to anything "real".
Gosh, I'd be somewhere on the leader list. First program for a PDP-8s my family bought me as a kid - i didn't write it down, but 68 or 69 IIRC. Still programming.
I like it better now than I did then, but that might be because I'm my own customer... Maybe it's the nicer tools.
Seems the main advantage is you have more perspective and resist the BS better. Of course that means everyone doing the latest fads thinks you're just an old fart stick in the mud who hates change, when really what's going on is you remember how it turned out the last few times that crap was tried under some other fad name.
However, if you wait long enough - and some of us have - you see the body of your enemy floating down the river.
No point modding up a +5. How about the 30 or so websites on my LAN of things? No internet involved at all. Faking certs for that would be just plain stupid. Seems the whole world is set up for stupid consumers only - no one creates content, right? That's why asymmetric DSL is such a hit, right?
Yep.
Practically, yes it is tax without representation, but I fear that legally it's just a cost, which isn't technically the same thing, even though it actually might as well be. It's maybe what we get for letting lawyers become law makers.
Disagreement that ignores facts may not be trolling, but its still wrong. And provably so.

trapped in a little box by a guy who keeps shoving my face into his butt. Help!

Please don't send me to gitmo for revealing this has all been a farce.

Chicken and egg. There's some CAD software on linux, more would be there if paying customers would demand it.
The alternative for games is called "adulthood".

I guess whoever modded the parent about Cody's lab troll was just...a troll, or someone so stupid they don't get sarcasm.

Naw, if you were really French, it'd be an -outraged- accent.
