  2. Linux... No Effect... on Microsoft Buys into Corel · · Score: 2

I don't think this will have any effect at all on Linux. If you read the story, it appears that Microsoft won't actually have any control over the company's strategies. In fact, this seems to be similar to when they bought a good chunk of Apple a few years ago. They essentially don't have any control over the course Apple was and is taking. I think they're just a big shareholder.

  4. Two Views. on Napster Back in Court · · Score: 2

I can see both views dealing with paying for Napster.

On one hand, there are people who would say "Sure, costs less than CDs, etc, etc..."

On the other hand there are people who would say "Now that I'm paying for it it's not right. I should do this anymore."

The problem is with people like me who are in the third category, right between the two. What are your opinions?

  6. $1000 Dollars. I don't think so. on Would You Pay $1000 For Windows? · · Score: 2

Despite this report, I really doubt that people would pay this much for Windows. At the point where the basic software becomes more expensive than the hardware, I'm sure people would think more than twice about buying the product.

At $1000 Windows would become extremely impractical, and the free solutions would definitely become more popular.

Seeing this as an opportunity, all of the mentioned companies (Adobe, Quark, etc) would definitely port software. It's common business sense.

Therefore, I believe that if Windows became so exhorbitantly expensive, its maker would have a very serious problem on hand (which is what MS is saying about the breakup anyway).

  7. TINY and less space! on MP3 Player Released For Handspring Visor · · Score: 3

The point is that it's tiny. If you look at a Visor module, you'll notice that's it's about the same size as a GameBoy cartridge.

The other point is that if you normally carry your Visor around with you, and want an MP3 player, this thing doesn't make your Visor any bigger and you don't have to lug around another unit.

I think it's a great piece of technology, albeit a $40 dollar battery holder? Should be $10.

  8. Palmtops... on Micropayment Wars Are Over... PayPal Wins? · · Score: 4

Palmpal was very good. They even used to offer a means of paying other people or transferrinf money to others right through your PalmOS PDA. That was excellent until they cancelled it. This was an excellent system. I'm not saying it's not great right now, but the ability to use a PDA for paying was amazing. Can you imagine being at the store, taking out your PDA, aiming at an IR port, and then paying? I for one, would love that.

It's too bad PayPal got rid of this, because with this they could have continued being at the front of innovative payment technology.

Intel really should put more tests on their products before releasing them, even if it means AMD beats them to the users. This way they look even worse.

    That's just my 2 cents.

Either way, it might be one of the more interesting points in this never-ending line of law suits dealing with MP3s.

I think USB 2 will usher in a new era of connectivity. I admit, I don't own any USB devices, because as it was noted, it looks cooler on paper than in real life (conflicts, freeze ups, lack of support)...

  22. Bandwidth Shortage... on Houston DSL users File Lawsuit Against SBC · · Score: 1

    This is really bad.

I mean, I know the reason they did this has got to be a shortage in bandwidth going into the provider. There's a bandwidth shortage everywhere where the internet exists at this time.

I work for Nortel, and have a few resident experts I talked to about putting in new fiber into the ground. I've also talked to a few Bell Canada contractors who work with this stuff. Everyone agrees that the infrastructure simply isn't there and that it costs way too much to put in more bandwidth, just because the infrastructure has to be upgraded.

And I'm sorry to say it's true. But there is a shartage of bandwidth. THe phone companies can't actually afford all of it, which is besides the fact that we're using it up almost as fast as it's invented!

Conclusion: I wouldn't be surprised if more providers started doing this, simply because of good 'ole dollar sign.

THis leaves me thinking about a time when Unreal Tournament graphics will be considered out of date. The 3-D engine in that game is truly remarkable and the people figures come pretty close to life-like (especially the faces, which Quake has problems with).

I don't think this genre will gie anytime soon. The graphics become more and more real, and as they do so, the game becomes more and more of a stress reliever!

Besides this, even when a genre 'dies', it really doesn't. There's always at least one good title of that genre around. Always...
