  1. Re:Totally inaccurate assessment on Verizon Hints At Scrapping Unlimited Data Plans · · Score: 1

I wonder how many people actually have regular access to wi-fi. The average person who doesn't have a laptop probably doesn't have wi-fi at home. I don't know if most people even have wi-fi at work. Considering how often I see people hunched over a phone texting or doing some other non-phone call activity, I think that a lot of people out there will be using data over their 3G.

And imagine when 4G is readily available. If you can get that kind of speed then you're not going to want to wait until you're in a free hotspot. That's half the idea of a smart phone... using it anywhere.

People don't use much data now, but pretty soon iPhone users are going to have hi-def video to upload, Netflix, video calling, multi-tasking so that they can listen to Pandora in the background.. all just in time for metered data. And even if you don't break the limit usually, now you have to pay attention to it, always monitoring your data usage, especially when you're about to use any of the new features.

I would pay. I did on WoW for a long time. I love the social aspect, I love the ability to buy or trade with others, I love the ability to give or get help with quests or hard kills. But I hate that there's so much a solo player can't do.

My playing style just isn't cut out for groups. I lack the self confidence, I don't have enough privacy at home to voice very often, the amount of time I have to play is sporadic and I can't be relied upon to show up at a specific time or play for a set length of time.

Because of that, there is a whole lot of content I'll never see. What I would love is for every dungeon and quest to scale for the number of players. However hard a raid is for 10 people, scale it down so that a solo can do it with the same relative difficulty. That way everyone can do everything and get all the treasure and equipment.

If I had that I would definitely pay. In fact, the game would be worth more to me and I might consider paying more than it currently costs. As it stands now, though, I quit because I was unable to go much further as a solo player.

This can be countered by requiring the use of certain skills that are only learned at a higher level. You can't get into the dungeon without a high level lock picked, or you can't defeat some boss without certain spells or skills. There can be work arounds or alternatives so that any high level class can succeed, but still prevent any amount of low levels to finish.

Considering the Urban Dictionary defines "persay" as "an incorrect spelling of per se. Used by those who do not know its proper use," I'm not so sure you want to be using that as your reference guide.

No they don't. Go find any commentary about the huge GTA for XBox bugs. You won't, except maybe buried in a forum. The people on the street stop talking after about 20 minutes if you play on certain versions of the console. This was big enough for Rockstar (or Gathering or whoever is the actualy company) to set up a special phone number and rebate system. But Gamespot didn't mention it at all.

first off , these were national guardsmen dranw from a military police caompany, they had no trianing in prison work, and some off the people eh odid apparently had been fired fro varions US prisons for brutality.

I was an MP in the regular Army about 15 years ago. The Guard and Reserves all go to the same MP school as the regulars, and we're all mixed in together. We did get a few days training on POW processing and guarding. Not much, though.

They divided us up.. some of us were guards and processors, some of us were the prisoners. I remember that it didn't take long for the "guards" to start harassing the "prisoners." Nothing like in those photos, of course, but there was plenty of shoving and pushing and shouting. And the POWs in this case weren't enemies, they were the same people that the guards were living with, friends with.. the same people that a few days prior (and after) were the ones they trusted, relied on, leaned on.

That behavior wasn't encouraged, but as long as it didn't get too out of hand nobody did anything to stop it either.

I don't know if this means anything, but I think it shows that people in authority and under great stress can do things they wouldn't normally do. I'm not defending the MPs in those photos, of course. I'm just not too surprised it happened.

  10. Re:Getting a lot better on Hybrid/Electric Vehicles: Should I Buy? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I've had my Civic Hybrid for a week now. I'm getting about 40 mpg with a lot of city and heavy traffic driving (Newark, NJ). It's slowly but steadily going up, though. Earlier this week it was 38 or so.

The engine shut-off isn't quite what it's cracked up to be. Yeah, when you stop at a light or in traffic the engine shuts off. But if you creep forward a bit the engine won't shut off the next time you stop. You have to get up to a certain speed or go a certain distance/time (not sure yet what the rules actually are) or next time you stop the engine stays on. And it doesn't even recharge the battery at that time. It's very frustrating because I sit in a lot of stop & go traffic and you can't just stay put when all the cars in front of you are rolling. You let off the brake and the engine kicks back on, and the only way to ensure it turns off next time is to let a big gap form between you and the car in front of you then gun it and step on the brake. Not a thing you want to be doing in heavy traffic.

I'm not yet 100% convinced a hybrid was the best choice. The gas mileage is great and the ultra low emissions is nice, but I passed up on a lot of frills to get them. (You can get the top model Civic practically maxed out for less than the hybrid.. you give up a sun roof, fog lights, fold-down rear seats, and more). But for all intents and purposes, even the hybrid is just a regular car. It's spunky enough. I've had no trouble getting up to speed on the highway or keeping up the speed. Even with such a "weak" engine it still goes pretty fast. And besides, it's one of the only cars that gives you that 'holier than thou' feeling. So maybe I'm 80% convinced. Ask me again in a couple of weeks.
