A. its way more scales better B. it compiles to bytecode when run on the server. nifty..! C. JSP = JAVA server pages, you have a WAY more powerfull development language than VB. They are just begining to plan to ad treads(just an example:o) D. performs better under heavy loads
I constantly see people struggling to get their java programs working- a new release comes out, and poof things break Sun describes which classes that becomes dated when ever they update the JDK? And are you suggesting that java dont work?(which would be kinda lame, the language works, if somebody has problems. 99% of the cases the problem will be a programmer related one)
My colleague spent a few days trying to use java app to access a database and do a simple web app. At every step there were obstacles - money, flakiness, etc. In the end, he switched to perl, and he was doing stuff in no time Ok, im sad to hear that. J2EE is far more suited for web apps. but ok, youll need to learn the language first. (AND NOT JUST READ SOME FREAKING TUTURIAL ON THE EXACT SUBJECT YOU FIND INTERESTING).. I bet the reason that the process was easier in perl, is simply your colleague has more experince with CGI perl.
At the moment, Java is good for mobile phones and smart cards. But for other things I'd give it a miss till the third/fourth generation of Java. Ok, if you say so..
I think I get you point, but seriusly, would you like to assemble a house using a skrewdriver as hammer?
And I still belive that you never should prechoose a tool for ANY situration, no matter how convenient it is for me to use my favorite programming tool.
first off , pick the tool that suits your need. Now with that out of the way, i must vent my frustrations. I really cant understand the all the "Java is slow", "Java dont work" , "Java arent opensource" i am getting from my fellow coders around the world. Most of which never have use the language for a serius task. (cumon, a hello world applet arent a application). It seems like the Java is facing fire from to camps, both the Pengiun coding dudes, AND the Microsoft community. The Microsoft coders i understand, they see Java as an attack on their bread and butter, VB. But the linux folks? Why? As an example i created a node on a certian (very cool)website (claming to contain Everything:o) about why you should use serverside java for webside application logics instad of perl based CGI.. Im a freaking consultant, people pay me to hear what i have to say about theise things(and I actually have tested thiese things in different senarios). But my node? Was offcource heavily down voted(same as bad carma), and well i guess that tells a bit about our linux developer community. Look at the other comments.. The linux developers have a problem. They do not belive in the saying "use which tool fit".. They just wanna code C/PERL/Phyton or what ever.. I know i am being very general in my judgement, but I belive the fact that Linux users are a bit TO nerdy for their own good. I for example have convinced my boss(a side node is that we are VERY much in bed with M$(i work for Denmarks third largest IT consulting firm)), that Open Source arent that bad an idea for consultant firms. But convince one of my good (linux using)friends to try out photoshop for instad of that crappy little gimp(i hate it.. after working with Image manipulation programs like PhotoShop, Photogenius(amiga) and likes.. It seems very unmature(well, stop crapping D, and help out..!)) they blow up.. Why? ALLWAYS LOOK AT THE JOB YOUR DOING, THEN PICK A TOOL TO DO IT WITH
I think its important to remember this just is another headace for us webdevelopers. I cant think of a client that would accept a crappy look in IE, and that is what ull get in most cases if you use this feature.. more serverside work is needed, great.
Maybe it would be a ideá to try starting up a project dealing with these issues? I work as a professional programmer @ ICL , thats allready one developer.o) And i think if you made the language intrepeters in a way so people whom does not code, could work on them. I could be very interesting(look at ispell) . If anybody code C(++) or maybe Java, and also finds this duable/interesting. Send me a mail, and lets talk.
lets stop , this is getting silly. I really have better things to do with my time than discussing this with you. But I really dont get you. I state a comment, about a subject posted here. And then you see one phrase you can flame, and there you go.. And what i have a even harder time understanding is that when i tried to explain that object oriented termoligy, is not just limeted to OOP(object oriented programming, etc C++). You again, where mr. smartass. But im telling you, again, it seems like the only way you brain can think in objects is when it sees objectname.proberty , with is really sad. You can also use object oritated logics for databases. example. databasename.tablename.coloumname | tablename.coloumname
This is object orintated logics/termoligy , which is not limimited to programming methodoligy. If a compontent wont work because a other component where not present on the system(like in the senario i first described), you can say that the compontent fails because of a object is missing. But yes, this would not be correctly put, the correct way of writing offcource would be to say a depending component was missing. Cause it is a component(but what is a component? a thing, whats a thing? it could be a object.. depending on usage/view). ill give you that. I just code C++/JAVA each and everyday, from 8 - ?. And therefore tends to look at everything as objects. Which offcource is wrong(but it works for me, and i youll like a pissing contest, im up for it choose you weapon. Java, C++ or Perl. We could do something like, who makes the coolest apache module or something. And let people wote on them, im pretty confident), but im pretty sure most people understood what i meant. But I WONT give you the pleasure in thinking, that i find your OO == OOP ideá correct. I recommend that you read:
Design Patterns : Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software and mayby: Object Oriented Perl
Im pretty sure that you would look a little different on the "buzzword" Object Oriented when done...
What we need is some sort of a universial translator. So depending on a browser setting, all text on a website would automatically be converted to the language set as default in the browser. That way, we could all communicate in our native languages. Like Star Trek, where everybody SEEMS to speak English:o)
19 states and the american ministry of justice have a recomendet that microsoft should be devided into two seperate companies. This happens because of the result of the other MS case, microsoft has until 24. may 2000 to come up with some defence afainst the prosecutor recomendations. Microsoft still dont think they are doing anything wrong..
A little, kinda funny *note* When the danish national radio news announced the that microsoft lost the first case. they repported, and i quote:" Microsoft has been commited guilty of breaking the unitedstates antimonopoly law, by using their position to spread their INTERNET SEARCH ENGINE, INTERNET EXPLORE.." i found that pretty funny:o)
You are so right, but dont you think that the handhelds are heading for really noteable change, i mean, with the mini harddisk coming up and everything.. And dude, you computer ARE`NT obsolete, not in anyway. I have numerus old 486/Pentuims , they arent that great @ MP3 ripping etc. But the x-less penguins run like little gems:o)
Ok, you seem like a smart guy, you spelled terminology. Then when you was in the univeristy, and you learned about object orintation/classes , what did you learn? That they are a TERMinoligy, you can use a class / oo-model to descibe almost anything. Like in this case, we have a application. A object, which needs various other libs and stuff (other object), hence, its object orintated. Thanks for wasting my time, and stop being such a baby..
Ok, people is really getting annoied about the OO part of my previos comment so...
But the truth is that it is, if you like it or not. A program (lets just call it a object, or a class for that matter, if anybody has studied classdiagrams/object-oriented design, know that these are termoligies, and not some thing definable the way you guys are doing. C is based on the OOP termoligy, and thats it) running on linux, might require a kernel of some version(let call that another object) and maybe a Xserver with GTK. Get my picture, various objects needs to be installed on a system to get a certain object running. For non-brainers, that is object oriented my friend.
People is getting confused, the average slashdot reader knows all about the varius linux flavors. And what they offer(and dont), but take my dad for an instance. He almost only uses his computer for text editing, soo i convinced min to install a redhat linux + staroffice, so he did.. but next time i visited. There was a windows OS up and running again. The problem he had encounterd was, he needed to get some burning software. ok, simple.. NOT.. he had ud with some software that needed TCL/TC, and that wherent installed. And he eventually gave up..
I guess what im trying to say, is that non-geeks, can have serius problems with the object oriented part of linux. Think of the problems directX versions have caused some PC users. I think a what-is-linux.com would be great for these users.. many want to start using linux.. but have bad experinces..
I checked my code again and again.. and this is simple HTML. I code JAVA for a living 4 crying out.. And I always do my tags im lowercase.. I think i prettyer:o)
