I had a similar experience. I had moved and the bank had my new address, but apparently there is a different system to record the address change for the debit card, so when I tried registering my debit card, it came back invalid. After going through several times with the same address b/c I knew it was right, it locked it out. Once I talked to the bank and got it cleared up, I contacted paypal to get it put in and was told I'd never be able to use that card. How frustrating, since it is the card I use for everything.
I ran into this problem as well when I had Earthlink Dial-Up. To get around it, we just set our mail-server up to listen on a different port.. heh heh. But that was only a temporary solution until we got secure pop/smtp set up. You might try it to get you by.
Most people these days use POP-BEFORE-SMTP or SMTP-AUTH in order to use a remote smtp server. It is a much better system because it allows people to actually send mail from THEIR server as opposed to relaying through their ISP's and having that in the headers.
This is what we do for our hosting, and it works great. And your definitely right, the users love it.
That's what we do. We were one of the first on the list for DSL from our local telco.(The funny thing is that our next door neighbor was put on the list first, but b/c of his last name, they haven't gotten around to him yet.) Since it doesn't look like they'll get to him anytime soon, we just created a wireless hop between the houses, I've got an antenna outside my window and so does our neighbor, happy surfing for both of us, plus he chips in for the monthly bill and everyone's happy.
Another solution you may consider is the Intermec 6651 terminal (approx $1500 on Mobile Planet.com). It's fairly light-weight (approx 2 lbs), about the right dimentions (8.4" L * 5.5" W), has a built in camera, and also supports PCMCIA Type 2 cards, as well as CompactFlash cards. It runs Windows CE and the thing I like about it over the Compaq I-Paq is that it has a keyboard so you're not stuck screen typing everthing. The battery life is about 8 hours( as long as you turn the backlight off or autodimm it after a few seconds).
It only has 32 meg of memory which is split between storage and programs, but you could easily add a couple hundred meg CF card or Sandisk for the storage. The camera will do still pictures as well as video w/ sound. I have been able to fit about 2 hours of video on a 175 Type 2 Sandisk card, or about 8533 still pictures. Sandisk makes Type 2 cards up to 880 megs or so, but they are pretty pricey(~$1800). Over at pricewatch, you can pick up a 256 meg Sandisk for about $300 or a 256 meg CompactFlash card for about $355. The battery is removable, so you could get additional batteries (about $129) to swap out along with a couple of Sandisks during your ride and have your support van charge the batteries/upload the video.
Another great thing is that it has a built in 56k modem so you can dail into any ISP along the way (great for where you won't be able to get cellular coverage) and also a USB port. If you decided you didn't want to use the built in camera you could always opt for an external USB Camera that fit your needs.
If you want to know more, take the fuzzy rabbit slippers off and mail me.
If you don't mind a bit smaller screen and using WinCE, the Intermec 6651 is a great terminal. It has a fully rotatable touch screen, as well as a bonus of having an integrated digital camera in the hinge area. The quality of the camera is not the greatest in the world, but for an integrated camera in a light-weight mobile device, I'm happy with it. You can find more information on www.mobileplanet.com by doing a seach for 6651.
It will faithfully do 802.11b wireless and works great around the house, also works great for taking with me to class for taking notes. And with the touch screen and included software, you can even do diagrams!
If you want more info about it, take off the fuzzy rabit slippers and e-mail me.

Hmm... Interesting.
What do they do if the car you happen to be "breaking into" is your own? Maybe you locked your keys inside and are simply trying to get them? I know I've done this many times.... It's nice to know that I'd be thought of as 'criminal'....

Continuing on this line of thought...
The camera in your house/bathroom isn't all that far fetched. The government doesn't know if you may have friends that are criminals. And these friends might visit your residence. And what better way for the government/police to see if there's a criminal in your house than by using cameras in your house/bathroom, etc..... And all of this is in the name of your protection.
Yeah right.
It starts with cameras at stadiums, ATM's, street corners, etc. How long before they DO want to install a camera in your house... all in the name of the public good.
I sure as hell don't want someone watching me 24/7, even if I'm not doing anything illegal.
Not to mention the fact that the tech sector has exploded in California. You can't tell me that all those servers out there aren't sucking up power like there's no tomorrow. And top that off with the fact that no new plants are being built, who couldn't see disaster coming?
If Radio Shack is taking down names and addresses (as they always do on every purchase) and scanning in the bar code of the CAT, then they are obviously tracking you.
The bar code they scan is used for their inventory tracking purpose so that they know when to send more units to the store. I have gotten a couple of these from different stores and the card that they are scanning is identical for each one. As to providing your name and address, well, I'm one and one. The first time they didn't ask, the 2nd time all they asked for is a name or company. If you're queasy about giving them more info to track you with, you'll just make something up:) But if they decide to translate that barcode into something unique to each "CAT", then I'd really start to worry about tracking. Until then, enjoy the free hardware..
I dislike TV advertising because it breaks up the flow of whatever I'm watching, wastes my time, and is generally quite irritating in itself.
In case you don't know, that advertising is what enables you to watch your show. Without advertising dollars, the cost of such simple things such as newspapers, TV and magazines would be astronomical. Putting up with 4 minutes of comercials is the price you pay for cheap entertainment.

Hmm.. I found a much easier way. Just create a batch file called ls.bat with 'dir' in it and put it in your system dir.
