You are gravely mistaken. Slashdot is not sided with Linux. Slashdot is sided with Microsoft. Hear me out. Right now, stock for Microsoft is dropping at an amazing rate. The DOJ has taken about 40 billion dollars from Gates in terms of stock, from $90b to $59b. Microsoft is in danger of being split and diced by the DOJ in the courts, and their financial situation is reflecting it.
Now, where does Microsoft go when it needs stock help? To their competitiors with lawyers and NDAs. But all of their competitors are going open source, so Microsoft can't sue them. What now? Microsoft decides to give up and ally with them. Microsoft is actually conspiring with major Linux corporations to drop their stock price faster than Microsoft is getting theirs dropped, to neutralize Microsoft's drop, in a hope of recovering Bill's 40 billion. Remember, a billion dollars in the Linux community goes a long way.
Microsoft has not taken over everything. I have already informed CmdrTaco and JonKatz about this, and they have agreeded never to mention the drop of the stock prices of Linux corp.s compared to MSFT. Now, how is that siding with Microsoft? The plot thickens:
Bill Gates and others who organized this drop were actually trying to destroy the entire OS market. They were depending on the DOJ to spin Bill off to a new MS-Games Co. At this MS-Games Co., Bill would eventually create an operating system working inside a game environment, built into the game. You would be unable to purchase the game without getting the OS, but MS-Games Co. would buy out Sierra, ID, etc.. and gain a near monopoly over the game market. They would be the lone corporate produced Operating System. The problem is that they never factored in that the DOJ would nail them for integrating software into other software. Now, they're trying to pull back, to stop the plans that Bill has set into place. And only Slashdot can save them...
thousand tons of explosives to your back and propel yourself to space with none of the hassle of education or intelligence!
Click on the star system, and you're off! Of course, it costs extra to download fuel and oxygen. It could eliminate the entire AOL user base in one swoop. (Of course, you need to think about the impression the average 1337 AOLer would give to extraterrestrials..)
This is actually ontopic. The above post addresses an important topic. Some very reputable Open Source advocates have spoken their mind on this issue here.
This violation of privacy is blatent and outrageous. But it seems that the aliens are threatening to take drastic measures if we don't cut it out. See the recent story on this issue for further details into the dangers to humanity in general that our spying might cause.
The Hubble Telescope has been able to see Uranus, but we haven't gotten a probe onto the surface of Uranus yet. What good is it if you can only look at it?
Of course last night (isn't that how it seems to work) my v3 blew up, so maybe it's time to switch teams
That's actually a feature. You see, at the design meeting for the v3, it was decided that it was impossible to convince software manufacturers to make backware compatible graphics in their software. The team thought night and day about this, and how to reach the forward compatibility spec that marketing wanted, and finally decided on an ingenious plan. They implanted a nitrate charge in the circuit board for the card, linked to a timer. At random times over the next three years, all v3 cards will self-destruct, thus ensuring that customers will upgrade. This ensured that forward compatibility was achieved. If you are surprised by this, don't be. Microsoft took a similar tactic during the development of DOS. Somewhere hidden inside the DOS kernal is a bit of code that causes BSODs, system crashes, etc to occur if there is a one year difference than the year of that version DOS' release and the current date. Unfortunately, the Microsoft programmer who wrote this left to work on Linux, and nobody at Microsoft could take it out. Instead, they released a 'new version' of DOS/Windows every two years, and tried to migrate users to a NT system, which had a rewritten kernal. Many other companies have done this. It's the true definition of the term 'bit rot'.
When Win2K sees my linux partition, it freaks out and starts polling all of my disk drives in an infinite loop. Someone at MS is on crack.
That would be Win2K's automatic virus protection. If it detects Linux, it will bring down the system in a valiant attempt to prevent future contamination. Make sure to backup before installing Win2K.
In future games, which will use far more detailed geometry, the GeForce will beat the V5 at ALL resolutions.
In future games, there will be better graphics cards. I think that the point was that this was to help you decide what you want to play Quake3 on. (Does Q3 support T&L?)
wouldn't it be illegal for me to give myself pornographic material?;)
It would be illegal. But if you scanned it into your computer without looking, emailed it to an over-18 friend, and then had them email it back to you in the form of spam, you could view it and act as an 'innocent victim' of the image.
5. (Unless you're an innocent, non-sexual-content website, in which case you will almost certainly be blocked -- It's happened to me more than once).
Yeah. This can be very painful. Example: The network tech had just installed some censorware to keep us 'task-oriented'. Now, we were moving between servers, so our email accounts were all down. To hold us over until the new server arrived, we got Geocities mail accounts. These were fine, except that the censorware blocked out Geocities as a 'massive porn trade center'. (This was because geocities hosts some less than appropriate websites) Quite conveniantly, the network tech was flooded with messages (he had personal email at another ISP) telling him that everybody in the office, at various times, had been visiting a massive porn trading center. Now, since the software failed to tell him exactly what 'porn trading center' we were visiting, he just compiled the reports into a binder and gave them to the CEO. The only thing that saved us was that the CEO himself had tried to get to his mail account, and was not appreciative of the report that he had visited the trading center. The issue cleared itself up presently, but we've never used censorware since. (But the network tech does check out the weblogs occassionally. That's probably the best way.)
Why not? We ban gun shops from selling automatic weapons so that kids can't get them, the next logical step is banning porn. After that, bars can't sell beer, and shops can't sell cigarettes, because kids might get them. This is all an obvious course of action, based on what we have previously done (raised taxes on all of the above items). The government takes the law into its own hands to kill off industries that it doesn't like, and calls it 'sales tax'.
I hope you get something more creative. Maybe write a story about how Jon Katz...
Maybe JonKatz is actually Susan P. Coach, the lobster is actually the Columbine School Shootings, and the thousands of mud shrimp were JonKatz's stories. Really, he already integrated concepts that you are just thinking of now.
At the same time, that post is an insightful look into the entire Digital Villiage paradigm. You see, Slashdot is Susan P. Coach, the entire Digital Villiage thing is the lobster, and a bunch of idiot posters are the mud shrimp. Your post looks kind of like a mud shrimp anyhow.
I tend to think of 1337 d00dz as digital terrorists. I mean, they have their reasons, and they are perfectly justified, to themselves. The other 99% of the community hates them and wishes they would all die. On the other hand, Microsoft is more like a Digital Packrat. They spread disease (bloated code, gooey GUI) and are generally annoying. They steal bits and pieces from everybody to enhance their own empire. They are mistaken by half the world for something cute, fuzzy and nice, and the other half has come to realize what they are.
I would probably have time to finish this comment, but I decided to do some experimental work on the \etc\passwd file for a critical system right before I make backups. I'm using an editor that I have no idea how to use to make the changes. I wonder if that beep I just heard was it autosaving? Oops.
being discussed on traditional media rather than just on the Internet alone.
You think that there is a 'traditional media' anymore? You fool. What was previously the 'traditional media' has been absorbed by the AOL-Time Warner-Military conspiracy. Are you aware that CNN, part of this so called 'Traditional Media' and a key part in the AOL-Time Warner supercorporation used military-grade psychological warfare during the Kosovo conflict? I didn't think so. The so called 'Traditional Media' is a massive government propaganda machine designed solely to allow the government to justify continued funding to the military. In return, the military will wage war on third world countries if the government needs to cover its tracks (Chinagate, Monica, etc), and the media justify it by using irrational logic combined with propaganda and subliminal messaging.
I ask that you not refer to this conspiracy as 'Traditional Media', but refer to it as 'the conspiracy that seeks to control the minds of American civilians by any means necessary'. Therefore, your last paragraph would be better stated as:
I'm glad that this is being discussed on the conspiracy that seeks to control the minds of American civilians by any means necessary, rather than just on the Internet alone. If enough people listen to that propaganda output center and if we can put "The Slashdot Propaganda Show" or something on it, we can get our message about freedom out. I personally haven't listened to the government conspirators or the propaganda, though the propaganda looks interesting with or without misused victim of the conspiracy Neal Stephenson.

Ummm.. I don't want to be walking down the street, to turn a corner and find JonKatz and whatever he has sex with going at it on the sidewalk.
