Why bother asking... The GeForce 2 will beat this thing, and the V5 5500 with a fast CPU will totally slaughter it. The time when professional systems were faster than gaming rigs is gone my friend.
From the general comments I read about Glaze3D on other message boards, it seems like this company has announced other crazy chipsets before (Pyramid3D?) and they never materialized. So I'll believe it when I see it. Oh yes, and it's due in Q1 2000 at the eariliest, which will probably put it a few months behind Voodoo4 and NV10, so who knows what 3dfx and nVidia will have by then.
"The Founding Fathers had experienced living under the rule of a European tyrant, and were afraid of having a standing army. They felt that a standing army could be used against US citizens, so they thought that the citizen-soldier concept - modeled after the Swiss - would afford the US the protection it needed from outside invaders while preserving its freedom within."
It's time to change that part of the constitution now. I don't know if you've been in a poor urban neighbourhood lately, but it seems to me that citizens today are more in danger from the bad elements among them than from a standing army/police.
"Still, compared to the nightmare I had dealing with Cogeco in Kingston"
Really? What was your nightmare scenario? I've been a Cogeco custommer in Kingston since they introduced the service, and my parents still are (I'm in Ottawa using Rogers now).
There has been ups and downs, but hey, it worked. When there was trouble, they sent technicians. Overall it was very much worth it.
I've used Rogers in two locations so far, in Kanata and Ottawa, and in both places I've had a static IP. I hope they aren't moving to DHCP, static IP is the reason I picked the service, despite the fact that I can get the 1-Meg modem installed for free (still have to pay monthly usage fees) since I work for Nortel Networks:P
I currently live in Ottawa, and in the 8 months that I've spent in this city, I had cable internet at two places of residence, and ADSL at one of them.
I was shocked to hear the horror story above, I have had inconsistent service before, but nothing that came even close to that. It was always easy for me to sign up for cable (and ADSL), it was always just a matter of checking if the area was ready, ordering the installation, and that's it.
I've been an internet cable custommer for about three years now. I used to live in the city of Kingston in Ontario (roughtly between Montreal and Toronto), population 130,000. They ran cable trials there as one of the first places in Canada to offer it.
The quality of the service has been ok, it goes down every now and then (I would say often), but it's usually fixed quickly. I do get packet look in a lot of Quake games, but it's still quite good most of the time.
With ADSL the service isn't that reliable either, and I've had the same amount of low-ping servers...
There's one important difference though, cable here (Rogers @home) gives you a static IP address, and ADSL uses DHCP.
Interestingly, both my ADSL modem (which I don't have any more, cancelled it) and and my cable modem are made by Nortel Networks.
I'm surprised no one mentioned the dumb terrain generation in CTP...
I didn't like CTP at first, but after playing it for a couple of weeks I really love it as much as Civ2.
However, the terrain generation really gets on my nerves. In Civ2, you could pick "Earth" as a terrain, I loved playing on that one. You can't have pre-made terrain in CTP, it has to be generated. Which brings me to the generation: it sucks. It puts tundra tiles in the freakin' equator! Unlike Civ2, it is not mostly hot in the equator, but all kinds of terrain seem to be disperesed all around. If you set the slider to have a more "uniform" terrain, it creates big lumps of mountains and other forms of terrain which doesn't seem realistic.
I think they should really improve on that, I would like to play on some real-world, or at least on some believable terrain.
Oh yea, and bring back the F-22, who cares about the F-15!
I remember reading on the New York Times' page reviews of Return of the Jedi and Empire Strikes Back from the time the movies were released. Basically the critics were saying that neither movie is as good as StarWars, that they're boring, etc. And look at them now, most people love all three, and certainly not everyone's favorite is StarWars. SW is my least favorite actually, I like ROTJ the best I think. Anyways, doesn't matter if reviews are bad, we will see a few months from now what we think of the movie when the dust has settled.
Hey, Austin Powers wasn't very popular when it came out, but now it's a classic.
You will not be flamed, as I recall Voodoo2's came out in February/March 1998.
It's funny how everyone ooh's and aah's at this Playstation, forgetting that it's not *here* yet. When it's here, then we can compare it to VoodooX's that are here at the same time, and I bet it won't look as impressive.
The N64 was really great too, it had the processing power of a $100000 SGI system of a couple of years before. Now it's just a console.
I didn't like Civ3 at first but now I totally LOVE it. For me it's just as good as Civ and Civ2 were, you just have to get used to the quirks and see the cool new stuff.
As for Alpha Centauri, I'm sure it's good but it doesn't have the theme of the civ games, which is evolving from barbarians to a modern society. Like Old Man Murray said, I know instinctively that Mongols are evil and India is a bunch of panzies. But what the hell is up with the "collective hide"?
Oh yes, and most serious gamers on PC DO have a P2-400 and TNT/Rage128, which just as good as the best G3 out there.
Oh yea, and EVERYONE has a top-of-the-line G3?

And how many 400Mhz G3s do you think are you there? Bet you didn't think about that.
What makes me laugh is that Carmack says a 400Mhz G3 = 400Mhz P2, as far as CPU is concerned. That goes against Steve Jobs' propaganda that a 300Mhz G3 = 400Mhz P2.
It's interesting that a Microsoft pawn says that free software may put companies out of business, while Microsoft itself has tried to put Netscape out of business by making its competing product free. Now they're crying foul when somebody advocates free software.
I think by now we're all used to this hypocritical double talk from MS.
I can't help noticing that on the spec page it says "150 million pixels". Doesn't that mean 150 Mpixels fillrate? The Voodoo3 3500 has 366 Mpixels fillrate, so it seems like it would squash the PSX2 in that department, if I'm reading this right. Of course the PSX2 doesn't need much fillrate because it's running at TV-res and V2 is running at 1024x768 and beyond.
I read a post up there where somebody was saying the PSX2 has 2.6 Gpixel fill rate, so what the hell is this "150 million pixels" of "image processing"??
Sure... It's been said before, and nothing came out of it. PC's are getting cheaper and more popular. The only thing that can hamper MS's hold on them is their reluctance to lower the price of Windows.
Besides, this nVidia Quadro card alone, purchased separately from Elsa, will cost you $1000. If you consider that, SGI is a great deal.

This is an April Fool's joke from a while ago, don't bother trying to dig into it...

Other than that, great game, love it.

You need hardware OpenGL. Currently it only works under Voodoo or Voodoo2 under Linux.

Last I heard they *will* support deficient boards like the RagePro but of course with lower quality graphics.
